      Hopefully this was a teaching moment for you. You’re in Virginia, the home of Mach V Motorsports. You’d be crazy if you didn’t get the new engine tuned by them. No offense to AndrewTech but this is the second video I’ve seen on TH-cam of a car blowing up shortly after AndrewTech wrenched on it (a certain TH-camr in Blue has the other video).
      About what specifically caused your failure: Cobb hard parts are pretty nice but you should never use one of their maps if you value your engine. Sure, it was “pro-tuned” but considering it made the same numbers as their OTS tune, it’s safe to say they made a few tweaks to their basemap at most. They definitely left in the Achilles heel of their tunes, which is how much they reduce the sensitivity of the knock protection mechanisms built into the ECU and engine from the factory. That engine has been eating itself alive since the day you had it tuned. Throw in a few new variables in the oil and cooling system, let the car idle for an extended period of time to burp the cooling system (and heat soak), and then throw it straight on the dyno for a long sustained WOT pull to redline with no fan on the intercooler and… well, we all saw what happened.

    I use to love Subies. I owned an 02 budgeye, 06 lgt, and several NA foresters/Imprezas etc… what eventually killed it for me is that 75% of your time and money is spent trying to make them “reliable” and every power mod feels like it’ll be the motors(or trans in some models) last. I still get stoked when I hear one and have respect for people in the game but after about 10 years I was done. Still stoked to see how this saga progresses and love the channel!

      I used to want a Hawkeye STi for a looonnng time. Buddy had one and didn't do much to it and the man was super frustrated with it after getting maybe 300AWHP out of it and 3 motors later. He has a 2015 STi with no mods and still having issues. I have a 2013 Nissan Altima V6 and haven't had any major issues with it other than CVT(The most garbage trans out there -_- ) for a while now and my 2018 Ford Edge Sport that puts down 430AWHP reliable and can still take more power throughout the drive line. Lol
      Point is, I respect anyone in the Subaru community that does this.

      A friend of mine ditched his Accord V6 6MT Sedan for a 2015 WRX. He bought the car with 30,000 miles on it. In the span of 2 years, his transmission went out at 42,000 miles and his engine started playing knock-knock jokes around 8,000 miles later. In this timeframe, he's spent over $10,000 just repairing the damn thing; all he has on it are a few bolt-ons, reliability mods, and a COBB stage 2 tune. At this point, he might as well buy a German car for all the money he's dumped into the damn thing. I avoid Subarus like the plague...
      In a way, the title of this series is a misnomer; you can't build the perfect daily driver Subaru WRX STI; the cars are way too fragile to be of any use

    • @Jay-yg8jj
      @Jay-yg8jj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@danielbryan5689 So your friend is running an OTS tune, which is notorious for popping motors, and Stage 2 on stock rods in an FA20 which are notorious for folding like lawnchairs at anything over stock power, and that makes it bad?
      Everyone, including Subaru owners, know that Subaru sucks at making engines and you NEED to get built internals before you beat on them.

    • @danielbryan5689
      @danielbryan5689 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Jay-yg8jj Wait, are you defending Subaru for making bad engines? You're completely missing the point. For starters, he was inexperienced with the platform, so naturally he went to COBB (a poor decision in hindsight, but every mistake is an opportunity to learn something), read their product description and purchased the parts necessary for that tune. Too often, we victim blame instead of directing our attention at the true parties at fault: Subaru and COBB. The WRX and the WRX STI are vehicles marketed towards young car enthusiasts. Young car enthusiasts tend to modify their cars more than any other demographic. Car enthusiasts in general are always looking to squeeze every bit of potential out of whichever platform they are involved with, so for Subaru to engineer an engine such as the FA20F which has little to no potential on stock components is colloquially "a dick move". You shouldn't have to purchase a $4000+ IAG block to *unlock* performance potential; the performance potential should have been engineered into the powertrain simply due to how the car is marketed. You don't expect a 2ZR-FE from a base model Corolla to make anything above stock hp; but you would expect that from the G16E-GTS found in the upcoming GR Corolla. And it does! Powertune garage made 473 whp on this platform with stock internals. And we don't expect that kind of thing from Toyota; a brand that is more concerned about making appliances for your everyday person rather than souped-up hot hatches. And yet Subaru's legacy comes directly from its sports sedans and hatchbacks. So why do we give them a pass when they don't deliver? If you have to practically re-invent a platform instead of building upon it just to make it reliable, then I'm sorry, but it's a shit platform. It shows that Subaru haven't learned anything from the deficiencies of the EJ lineup, and they aren't prepared to invest in a proper performance engine. The new Subaru WRX and lack of a new STI is proof that Subaru has little to no interest in its enthusiast market and performance division.

    Those blue honeywell/fram oil filters are known to have their filtering medium break down prematurely (in under 3,000 miles in some cases). Those particulates can cause the main bearings to fail. The honeywell/fram oil filters are used in NA because they're made in the US and cheaper to ship. In japan the Subaru parts uses filters made by Tokyo Roki that do not experience the same failure. Getting the Roki filters can be expensive to ship, but if you go to a Mazda dealer in the US and ask for a large capacity RX8 oil filter Part #: N3R1-14-302 it's the same Roki filter, but at your local dealer, and no shipping cost.

      They certainly have inherent issues due to design, but much of it is to do with owners who beat the living hell out of them and neglect maintenance. When I had my cars tuned( 02 wrx now 05 sti), I told the tuner I just wanted a reliable, conservative stage 2 tune. I was also given insight as to why these motors commonly fail even if well maintained, and its usually due to people who feel the need to redline and put high loads at low rpms on these engines. The 2.5 liters especially, arent happy over about 5.5k rpm, anything over that is where the risk of a failure is significantly higher. 3 to 5k is the 'safest' range, or so I was told, and that you shouldnt exceed 50% throttle and boost under 3k.
