New Fram Tough Guard review

- Fram has had a great run in selling filters and building up there name to be one of the leading selling filters in the world. Honestly I have never found a Fram filter to be destroyed in the process of its lifespan in the engine. But I really have not taken apart many of them. The Tough Guard appears to have better filtration but is identical construction of the cheap Orange can.
But I just show how there made and it's up to you whether you buy it or not.
Bought from Canadian Tire

Fram's been making filters before your mama and daddy were born!
You are right, I guess Fram started in 1934 and my dad was born in 1935 and Mom in 1938.😉
I would of expected a bit more care from the company when it comes to a filter that says Tough Guard. Thanks Bill.😅
Nope same as Extra guard with slightly better filtration. You don't use them anyways. 😅
The gold can is a lot better than the silver or orange can. I do buy the gold can filters - IF - they are on sale.
Again , I am not surprised 😂
Never surprised with Fram now. Thanks Looney.
11:35 "Some don't like the covering (Sure Grip) on here". That would be me. Makes fitted cap wrench for removal purposes, useless. As mentioned, TG basically an orange can with better efficiency "rating". If one has no problem with fiber end caps, ok I guess.
Yes that was you, 😅
Yes that's the filter summed up by you again, OK I guess. I hear that alot about the filter and also that it's the best filter for the money. But yes it's OK. Not for me though. Thanks Faxmen
Just picked one up today for my Nissan. The center front what I could see looks different. Weight wise it feels slightly heavier than the OEM. Maybe I’ll swap them out later. But it seemed like a better built filter.
Should work ok for normal oil change intervals
@@crazybillsgarage Yeah I usually change oil a few hundred miles before it’s due. Many people don’t consider idle time.
@briteidea08 I applaud that comment, usually I forget how much idling time a vehicle goes through.👍
@@crazybillsgarage Yeah they go through some serious idling. Be it traffic the drive thu or drop off for school. Started thinking about this after seeing videos about police car idle hours. Plus working around marine engines and generators. If I had the ambition both my vehicles would have a bypass setup on them. But it’s too easy to just change the oil filter lol
@briteidea08 you have made me think about more.
Damn, I have just changed my oil in my car and used this filter. welp, know not to do that again.
you should do another video comparing it to a competitor brand like K&N
Good for short purposes I hope, long term filter it will probably not be advised. 😅
Yeah I change my oil every 3,000 miles on the dot so I dont think its going to do any harm but its def a brand im never giving my money again @@crazybillsgarage
Don't go long on oil changes.@@crazybillsgarage
I use Fram Tough Guard cartridge filters on my 13 Camry. The Cartridge filters TG9972 are better built then the canister filters. No fiber end caps, more pleats in the filters. Fram canister filters are OLD technology that has not been updated. FRAM needs to up their game on canister filters.
Your so right David, Fram does show more care for the cartridge filter, I guess it's because we can see how well they are made and canister hides there failings. Thanks.
Fram has a newer synthetic endurance filter that's apparently as good as the amsoil ones
Fram says a lot of things, I will need to check one out before I believe it.
My tg had end 1/8 inch off center. The metal spring at side let oil thru when flexed. Good thing I replaced with motocraft fl820s. I made an oil reclaim for generators with a motocraft by drilling 1/2 inch hole on cup end. Cleared shavings.attached funnel. It flows barely used 6 month change oil fairly fast.
Glad you switch from those tough gaurds, I don't think Fram even has quality control anymore.😂
I loved the tough guard but they dint make em like they used to. Im now going at minimum synthetic
There's not much difference from Extra guard and Tough Guard, tough guard was a little better filter media. Don't see many of them in the oil bin at work now. But still see many orange can. They both work to there breaking point like most filters. Thanks for the comment.
My toyo yzzd1 taco filter has a good seal top and bottom, but too teenee for me, so a puro 20195 boss went on my 2.7l prissypoo this time. Just fit passed the trans line bracket with finger room to spare!
I definitely like to find bigger filters that fit. As long as you have finger room it's good. Thanks Loren
Man, I just detest those cardboard endcaps.
I'm not a fan of the cardboard ends, but to a fan of Fram they would call them pressed fiber ends to make it sound better.😅
Basically just a silver can of death!
I hope not that far, for the engine yes.😉
Bullshit
Those end-caps make it a big no for me
Thank you D fields, I agree with that comment.👍
Just change your oil every 3,000 miles or six months which ever comes first, and don't drive like Burt Reynolds!
Changing oil is a great preventative to wearing down vital engine parts. Only a certain few of us keep to regular oil changes. Good points Novaboy.
...and if you drive like Burt Reynolds, you'll need more than an over rated oil filter!
@novaboy49 oh if I had the Trans Am he drove in Smokey and the Bandit I would not put a Fram in it. Oh what am I saying, Fram was in everything in the 70s.
Just change your oil at 5,000 miles! Don’t be an idiot. Fram is a fine filter
Fine or not, I usually use Wix or Champion based filters.
@@crazybillsgarage wix has gone down hill in recent years since Mann and Hummel took over
Hope that’s not for a Tayota 😂
Well actually those filters fit my Tayota Previa. 😂
It also fits my 2015 Ford Fusion, the end caps are not cardboard, it's a composition that doesn't deteriorate.@@crazybillsgarage
Fram has been a sham for a while now.
They need to improve and keep up with the times and better filtration options but they don't and keep giving us mediocre products.
Comical! Cutting the filter and looking at the material tells you nothing. Neither does measuring the filter material. Please learn the job filter components before you trash a product.
Thank you Uncle Bob
Nothing new about toughgard they been around many years
Tough Guard will continue to be around for a long time. Thanks Kelli
marketing BS Fram sucks
Glad to hear that, some who watch my videos defend Fram like it's the best filter ever made.
So another crappy Fram filter. Who would've thought.
Next will be the ultra synthetic, hopefully not as crappy.😅
Don't get your hope up! ;)@@crazybillsgarage
@troyschooler8538 yeah your right
pure garbage filter... i use & sell AMSOIL, along w/their filters... i run them a long time/miles & test oil... always comes out OK... 🤩
Amsoil makes a fine filter, if they were a bit cheaper where I live, I'd use them also.
Sounds like you have the amsoil butt plug installed as well 😂😂 🤡🤡
The the SAME shit components, SAME shit product. LOL... Fram never learns. When time keeps counting but you fail to update and improve your product, you fail to provide the common consumer with a better value. The joke is on the consumer when slight variations in the components are 'marketed' and 'labeled' differently to make you buy them. There are only a few filters at the top of the quality realm, all others rely on 'hope' and marketing to make a profit. You just have to ask; 'How much is my vehicle worth to me?'.
My vehicles are an expensive property, I like to use good filters and good oil to keep the engine from wearing down beyond normal wear. Yeah Fram has had a good trick going with there marketing team for years. They should of put that money into better made filters. Thanks 👍
@@crazybillsgarage Completely agree. They have the single largest, failure to profit marketing campaign I’ve seen in decades. The failure rate of these ‘filters’ is the reason why NO AUTOMOTIVE maker uses these, but very few people actually listen to the data.
@AXNJXN1 so right on no one listening to the data.
@@AXNJXN1 source for their failure rates?
@timbur2711 Thank you
