Yeah, this is almost as bad as the Disney version, where they made her his mom. But at least there, they had the excuse of it being for kids, so they didn't want Herc to be the result of an extramarital affair. What's this movie's excuse?

Something left out of every adaptation of hercules is his intelligence. Hes always portrayed as a brute, when in the myths he had a pretty good education and oursmarted gods and titans. His main weapon of choice was his bow and arrows, though he also used a club as it made sense alongside his strength, but his massive bow was what he used when he didnt just use his strength.
For god sake, he outsmarted atlas without even trying! Or when he used his intelligence and charm to convince queen hippolyta queen of the amazons to not Only lend him her most prized possession but also to run away with him and MARRY HIM. Only reason she didnt is the amazins were convinced he was kidnapping her/hippnotized her (heh) to come with him and she was killed in battle by accident. Turns out, hercules was just that charming.
He was also even smart enough to realize that the only way to skin the body of the nemean lion was to use the only thing that could- the creatures own claws. Even in portrayals of hercules where the skin is impenetrable, they keep out that detail for no reason

Sean, what you said regarding Iphicles and Heracles is correct...but Zeus and Amphitryon did not impregnate Alcmene at the same time, but rather on the same day. What happened was that Amphitryon had to go to war and promised his wife that he would return within three days' time. Zeus then disguised himself as Amphitryon and made love to her. He also made the three days that Amphitryon traveled home seem like one day. When Amphitryon got home, he made love to his wife, and I guess both men fertilized the same egg. As you said, Greek mythology is weird.

I want to add that people in general did bring their family to the wars as camp followers and such. Not the battlefield but they did travel along on campagins, there had to be cooks, cleaners, whores and smiths, since not many soldiers could acctually work a forge really well. So that a king takes his wife and child isn't a true strange thing. Although many movies wants us to believe that a battle is an agreement between armies to come somewhere without tents, wagons with food and water and other convenient camp stuff.

Obviously this movie didn't start life as a Hercules movie, but a movie set in Ancient Greece/Rome about a guy named Alcides. They just slapped names from the Hercules mythology onto the characters (and kept the name Alcides for some reason) once the Dwayne Johnson Hercules movie became known.
That's why this movie is about as faithful to the source material as DragonBall Evolution.

    • @CinematicExcrement
      @CinematicExcrement  9 ปีที่แล้ว +29

Actually the name Alcides does come from the myth. His mother and (foster) father originally gave him that name, but later renamed him Heracles (meaning "glory of Hera") in an attempt to placate the goddess. It didn't work.

Hera is the queen of the gods and actually is an apt goddess to pray to for safety and victory since technically she can grant those who please her power and kingship. She did offer Paris all of the world if he chose him for the golden apple.
Hebe is a daughter goddess of Hera /throws book-/ There are enough Crete royalty they couldve used. Its probably just used as a weird angle for the Hebe and Herc romance since they do end up together in the myths. Though Herc had a mortal wife first too named Megara who was a princess from Thebes.
Alcmene, Zeus is the worst parent ever. He doesnt really care if his kids, mortals or gods die or anything really. I mean his wife vents her jealousy and anger on them and Lightning gigolo doesnt really do anything to stop her.
Also its Hercules/ Herakles, not depowered Samsonnn. Hercules has always had his supernatural strength. He never needed to pray for them, its part of his 'demigodness' or being able to drink divine milk.
Pardon Im really fond of the myths but yes this is a bad movie even without the weird diverse non canon ideas. Also he didnt really do anything great or legendary despite the title. He kind of just somehow murdered a tyrant and well thas it. Herc became a legend more for his 12 labors than anything.

He killed him with the dagger because the tyrant killed his mother with the dagger. Both Lutz and Atkins were in Expendables movies.
By the way, there IS an Asylum Hercules called Hercules Reborn (2014). Hercules is more of an antihero and is played by a WWE star (and he's not bad). The movie looks like a decent pilot for a cheap 90s TV show like Tarzan or Beastmaster the Series and also has next to no connection with the myth. The main character is a military commander who needs Hercules' help to fight the general who started a coop. The main character's sidekick is the main guy from the notorious film Doom Generation (1993). Hercules is a main side-character.

The 3D is not an excuse for this. Immortals (2011) was also filmed in 3D, with the SAME BUDGET as this movie AND a more-famous cast (and Kellan Lutz, ironically), and its visuals were gorgeous. It looked like a moving Caravaggio painting with costumes by Salvador Dali. And Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was shot in 3D, with a HUGE A-list cast, and it had amazing visuals - and it actually cost LESS than this movie. The way I see it, there are only 2 possibilities:
    1. This movie is the result of a real-life version of The Producers. Renny Harlin and crew took the shittiest script they could find, raised $70 million for it but only spent $5 million on filming it, and then when the film bombed, they pocketed the rest.
    2. Renny Harlin is mentally retarded. Considering the fact that there's a scene in this movie where a person is heard talking but their mouth isn't moving, I think this option is the more likely.

Awesome as always, and good to hear that ending catchphrase again :)
and btw, while I really cant defend his performance in this movie,Scott Adkins is a really good actor in my opinion,he just gets shitty movies every now and then. and he does have a small fanbase from his role in the movies "Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing" and "Undisputed 3: Redemption",2 great fighting movies in my opinion and can recommend them if your looking for an ok movie with some kickass fighting.
    cant wait for next month.

I'm think of 3 horror movies that could be a candidate for the next Cinematic Excrement episode that is trying to be scary but failing. Could it be The 2010 Nightmare on Elm Street remake, one of the Piranha movies or The Purge since he did mention his short thoughts on that movie in his Purge: Anarchy vlog review?

+StevenMetalSlayer 117 The Disney version is a really good version, even if it's very whitewashed from the source material. But really, could Disney really do the story as is? And it still mostly holds up, except for elements of Herc and Meg's relationship feeling forced, the uneven climax, and Herc's decision to remain on Earth as a mortal raising the question that if Zeus could make him that again, why couldn't he do the same to make him a god again in the first place, or Meg immortal as well. But still, very solid entry.

Personally them taking liberties on the source material would annoy me less if we ever *had* a faithful adaptation. To my knowledge, every movie adaptation of Hercules ever deviated completely from the original story to the point of being unrecognizable - and given how awesome the original legend is, I resent that.

If you get a chance you should review Manos the Hands of Fate. It was directed by a fertiliser salesman (who never directed anything else before or since), had a camera that couldn't film more than about 40 seconds at a time and couldn't record sound, and none of the actors had ever starred in a film before.
