Sorry buddy, it sounds like you are simply overly analyzing the movie instead of simply enjoying it. If you look at modern issues which face cinema, this movie doesn't have them and that means a lot.

It didn't leave anyone disappointed. I loved this movie. I was almost 8 when it came out.
Here in the States in the 80s and early 90s this was on tv every Sunday. I watched this movie about a zillion times. It's nothing compared to stuff nowadays but back then my favorite part was the wizard fight!
Whats crazy about Wilt is, that his bad acting didnt make him intimidating, even tho he is a real life goliath, not only being super tall at 7'2, but also being so strong that he was able to effortlessly lift arnold with one arm (which arnold stated himself)

With the success of the Rated R comic book movies of late, hopefully we may get a 'Logan-esque' conan movie from Arnold.
I agree, in fact I have heard that Arnold Schwarzenegger is working towards getting a third Conan movie made at long last. I know that it was made I would gladly see it.
speaking of Logan perhaps if they make another one we can see the Hulks whooping Logans ass.
I heard this was going to happen back in 2013, but now I've lost all hope. I think instead of that remake, they should've done Conan III with Arnie, and released it in 2012, to coincide with the original movies 30th anniversary.

The lower quality of this sequel never reduced my enjoyment of Conan - the remake did. Here's hoping we do get another story with Arnold that they teased us with. Time will tell.

The third film, Conan the Conqueror, was written but after Arnie refused to reprise the role it was rewritten and turned into Kull the Conqueror instead.
Yep. Kull had a great cast. Bad movie though. The whole thing felt like a TV movie. They could have made it awesome with a bigger budget.
When I was a kid, i was so hyped about this movie coming out that I ordered posters from some magazine (starlog or something like that) and hung them on my wall.................... Back then there was no internet, so you ordered stuff by going to the bookstore, thumbing thru the magazines, and writing the address down on a piece of paper.
..............................I never got to see the movie in the theater because no one could take me, so i saw it years later on VHS. Its not a great movie, but with the posters on my wall I imagined the movie to be much better than it actually ended up being.
If you know anything about Wilt Chamberlain's personal life, you'll know how hilarious it is that's he's one tasked with protecting a girls virginity!

I too wanted a 3rd and final chapter showing how Conan became King called Conan the conquer. He just looks bad ass in that chair in the end
Wow, if Oliva d'Abo / Princess Jehnna was 15 at the time of shooting, it's incredible by today's standards that she's wearing that see-through top at 10:43! Once, we were so much cooler about these kind of non-issues... :-(
Then consider also that in her previous film (Bolero) when she was 14 she had a nude scene.
Another excellent review-retrospective, Mr. Harper! 😃 _Conan the Destroyer_ wasn't as gutsy as _Conan the Barbarian_ , but I loved the monster effects as a boy. This brought back great memories. I was pleasantly surprised when you mentioned that Andre the Giant was the Dagoth monster.

The first is a masterpiece, but the 2nd has a great atmosphere. It pulled you more into the adventure.
King Conan is still being developed (fingers crossed)
The plot for Conan the Conqueror closely mirrors two early Conan stories , both set later in Conan’s life after he has become King of Aquilonia. Both “ The Phoenix on the Sword ” and “ The Scarlet Citadel ” deal with attempted coups against King Conan’s reign.
King Conan was also promised in the original movie, with Mako’s wizard narrator telling audiences “in time he became a king by his own hand.”
“As a matter of fact,” Arnold said, “it has been written and we are now looking for directors, so this is a serious drive.”
Love these reviews, Oliver. This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I actually saw it in the theater when I was 5! As an adult I love Barbarian more but I defiantly pop this one in occasionally. I still get chills when Conan faces Bombaata. There seems to be so much power behind every sword impact. Great review. Thanks and keep it up.

I remember hating the ever living hell out of his sidekick. Classical 80s coward trope. It threw me for a loop when he suddenly slit a guy's throat out of nowhere. Crouching annoying whiny bitch-baby, hidden vaguely competent.
So in Essence they decide to give a giant f*** you too Conan fans.
Fighting a giant monstrous demon was also done in Krull, at the end.
Destroyer was Very disapointing to me. I LOVED the original film, and have read half of the original stories which were great also. They will never make another Conan film that will be as good as the 1982 film so we will never get a true end to that story.
I think Arnold could come back and finish the trilogy strong with the right people behind the movie. I haven't seen the movies since I was young I'm 40 now but would like to rewatch them especially if Arnold came back to finish the series
Fantastic work as always Oliver, it's good to see someone delve so deep into these old movies and explain a work of fiction that isn't really being created this way anymore, especially movies in the 80s have that special cinematography that gives these films that very magic, so many great retrospective reviews on your channel, do keep up the good work because you give an element of light in a world that feels very bleek.

Olivia was actually 14 at the time of production and turned 15 in January when production ended. That just make it even more shocking that she was so young and so developed as a woman.

She played as Garth's similar looking love interest in Wayne's World 2 at the end. She also had a continuing role in ER. Other roles exist, but those are the only few I can think of at this time.
She played the sister on the Wonder Years TV show.
She did a full nude scene the SAME YEAR in the Bo Derek movie Bolero. I had no idea until this video how old she was at the time. wow.
Yeah no she wasn't, "so developed as a woman" she was a CHILD and her outfits in this film were gross. It's also sickening how many people in the comments are still pointing out how turned on they are by her even after being pointed out that to them.
I seriously enjoyed this film just as much as the original 1982 film. Plus, those costumes of Olivia d'Abo ...

i like conan the barbarian , but i Love conan the destroyer, i was 12 when this was released, and have always loved it, from the story line, the music score, especially conans theme, the action, the sorcery elements, the actors performances ,the feel of it, i love it all, i have watched it sooo many times, and never get bored with it, after watching your awesome review, i am going to watch it yet again, and 36 years later, i will enjoy every minute of that fantasy world... thank you

I'm 46 years old ... I love watching the Conan movies when I was a kid and I still watch them to this day. I've got both of the conan movies and I also have red Sonya. I often like to watch older movies. they kind of relax me. the action scenes are at a much slower pace than they are in movies nowadays. Adventure movies are probably one of my favorite kind of movie to watch

A hell of a lot of classics came out in 1984. Not only classics but all around good movies. It was definitely a great year for movies.

That riders of taramis theme song always gets me super pumped it sounds so epic and exciting! Great review I also had no Idea Andre was the monster I always wondered why he was in that picture with Wilt lifting Arnie I just figured it was random because they were all so huge.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Really good score abs thought the actions sequences were better than the first Conan movie. Wilt was awesome.
There was a third movie in the works but it's recently fallen through.
My favorite scene was where Conan and Wilt Chamberlain's character were pushing open the big stone door in the temple where they get the horn. And if you look closely at the scene where they're crossing the lake to the wizard's castle, you can see Conan bumping Malack's head with the rudder.

Another great Retrospective Review. In my opinion, the most interesting Retrospectives are always those on box office or critical flops. This is probably due to those movies often having some troubled development behind them which is always more interesting to explore compared to perfectly produced and calculated blockbusters. Thanks, Oliver ;) Keep it up

Awesome documentary on a movie that I really love.
Still love this movie.
It's not about the script or the story and shit, it's all about how creators approached a comic book hero and the passionate estetics and the vision they had back then. Needless to compare with the first one, this here is a masterpiece on its own. I will never be satisfied enough about how beautiful scenes this movie has. I'm not even talking about the score. Legendary stuff.

Compared to the original, which I would think is the original gritty hard R comic book film which does not feel like a comic book film (NOT TDK), Destroyer is what it is as a fun fantasy film. Very comic book that sticks to it's roots/source material.
It just goes to show what Producers and Ratings board would consider PG as there are some gruesome moments in this film. Dagoth's horn pull being one. Compared to Fantasy films of today which try to grab families, Conan the Destroyer feels leagues above it.

I remember my friends being quite disappointed in this one. Grace Jones was silly, Wilt Chamberlain was ridiculous and not menacing at all, and the comedic tone pissed everyone off. They dumbed down the franchise with this one, and I felt the Sword and Sorcery genre in general was coming to an end at this point.

One thing I always wondered about this movie is if at the end of the movie, the girl had been sacrificed like she was supposed to have been, according to the prophecy? It always seemed to me that the transformation of the statue into a god was going fine until the sacrifice failed to happen, and at that point the thing became all perverted and turned into a monster. What if they had just sacrificed this one girl, the statue turns into a benevolent demigod of happiness and energy which roams across the land bringing peace and goodwill to all the kingdoms and peace on earth for all the peasants or something, and just because Conan selfishly wanted this girl to live, it turned into a monster and killed half the kings court.
Rob Cohen I always wondered the same thing. I also thought the princess knew she'd be sacrificed by her complacent attitude at the end (and throughout the movie) as she laid out seemingly willingly for the sacrifice . I was confused why shed be OK about conan's decision to save her.
Didn't the princess drink drugged wine right before the ritual?

Yeah I thought she was in a trance and didn't know what was happening or something.
Been a while, but from what I recall, the wizard reads the writing on the wall and then points out to the guardian wizard shortly later that the god will bring about the end of the world, and the guards/evil queen simply belief the god will let them survive as his followers and presumably rule whatever is left.
So even if Conan let them carry out the sacrifice properly, the god would've only been more handsome but still an evil destructive force destroying the world and recreating it in his own image.
Had the girl been sacrificed, it would have been hundreds of times more powerful, and evil incarnate. "Benevolent god of happiness and energy?" Ha.
As a wee lil lad I thought the statue transformation was the coolest thing ever!
Great review Oliver. Although I prefer the first Conan movie due to its darker tone I still enjoy this one as well. I must have seen it several times now so the fact that you managed to teach me some new facts about it (such as Arnold's objection to the lighter tone and that Andr'e was the demon at the end) is very cool. Only critique Conan didn't stumble onto the Akrio, he set out to find him ;]

Agreed. It seems like a "by the numbers" Conan adventure. It's actually the one that I remember as a child more often than seeing "The Barbarian". I'm typing this as I'm watching your review, and you just now said "by the numbers" right after I typed it. Spot on.
I would have loved to see what more Milius would do with the series. He seemed to "get it" more than most.

The artist who did that cover just used the Xenomorph from Aliens and then added the skull and horn on the top. (I know there is a visible skull in the alien head)
Like the original Conan this was also very underrated and again luv the epic of sorcery and swordplay and the dark ages. Also like Big Ben Davidson this had my favorite the Dipper the great Wilt Chamberlain!

Great review as always, Oliver! Although you forgot to mention that Richard Fleischer made Red Sonja (1985). A film in a very similar style to Conan and with Schwarzenegger as a Conan-like character.
I haven't seen a Conan movie yet so I don't have much to add (other than I need to check out the original), but fantastic retrospective as always!
Gosh, I haven’t seen this movie since I was a kid in the 1980s. I’m surprised by how much I remember from it though! I’m gonna have to start a new category in my DVD collection: 1980s Sword and Sorcery movies. All I have so far though is Excalibur and Dragonslayer.

I recommend reading Robert E. Howard's stories. His Conan stories and others. He was a great writer.
Howard actually didn't write most of the published "original" Conan stories; L. Sprague De Camp and Lin Carter did, based mostly on notes and parts of stories Howard left behind. Ther are, however, a great number of NON-Conan books written by Howard: Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane, and others. They're ALL worth reading, if you can find them
It's really funny because Sarah Douglas has said in some interviews that Arnold has said to her the reason why didn't return to sword and sorcery films what's because of Red Sonja was such a let down.

Very underrated channel in my opinion.
20:57 listen to the background music, it's the music titled "Scrolls of Skellos" from the ost. At that time point there's a false note which means this is not the original track but rather the new 2011 recording of it. That recording has that glaring false note in it, it still bugs me to this day how they could have left that in and not done it right.
Easily my fav Arnold movie of all time from my childhood, but after watching the review I can def see how it prob won't hold up now that I'm much older
