Nice to have a 60fps that works in most places. But did they fix HDR yet? It felt like playing on a 2004 cheap LCD even being on an OLED. I couldn’t play because of all the gray. I want deep blacks on my OLED.
Just moved to PC as of last night (R5 7600 plus a 7900 GRE) because I got tired of being told what resolution/frame rate I can play games at. I say this as someone who really likes Starfield and put a couple hundred hours in on Series X before moving to PC. Regardless, I'm happy that the game is now performing much better on the Series X, the 30 FPS experience was jarring to say the least, especially after playing Fallout 4 at 4K60.
Honestly it was really good at release. Yeah its defo way better now but it's mostly for QoL reasons. Myself and lots of people I know had an absolut blast playing through from launch day.
Considering how Bethesda's level of care has been for this game since launch, you'll likely have a better chance wishing for world peace and a 10 inch shwang. Thanks for the balanced review Oliver. One quick question. So if we need a 120hz capable display to enable 40fps mode, how do we end up hovering around 40fps during testing scenes on a 60fps target? In the old days, if your CRT couldn't flick up to 60hz then you were basically out of luck, but here we have Starfield able to exist at sub 60hz and still display on the VDU - is it simply the disparity which causes issues?
Eager to try the 120hz uncapped VRR mode. Looks incredible but it looked incredible before and the frame pacing was good at 30 so any added FPS will just be a bonus.
If you want every console game to be at 60 we would need new consoles every 3 to 4 years. After that consoles will begin having 30fps locks as software out paces them.
@@00-JT Typically developers learn the hardware much better toward the end of a cycle, but at the same time they want to keep graphic fidelity improving beyond what the hardware is designed for. It's always a choice to target or not target 60. I don't care about any excuses developers have anymore.
@@LostInDistance I'm not a very good gamer. For me, in addition to the things described above, the ability to increase the carrying capacity was a blessing. I used to have to sometimes force myself to keep playing, but now I have to force myself to stop since the update. Very good job from Bethesda I say.
So strange, because I remember hearing anything other than 30hz wasn't possible on Series consoles. Must be straight up Magic. Or, just OR, Starfield released only half baked and needed more time in the oven. Imagine if it released with everything they have patched up until today. I would probably have finished the game. I want to jump back in an restart. But once you get burned from an unfinished game, it makes it really hard to want to revisit. Why not just release a game in a much better complete state?
I beat the game at launch and spent over 100hrs. I would not say my experience was "half baked"-felt like a pretty complete game to me. Further: Skyrim has affirmed the notion that Bethesda single-player games have staying power for over a decade. Despite not being multi-player games, I welcome occasional updates to further improve the base game or add new features. The cake just gets sweeter.
Or y'know you could accept the reality of console hardware limitations. The frame drops stem from a CPU bottleneck. CPU speeds these days aren't keeping up with the GPU.
I ended up dropping the game after finishing the campaign because those 30 fps on console gave me headaches, everything was too slow, sluggish. Now with these updates, I'll give it another chance and do the New Game Plus. In 2023 and still playing games at 30 fps?? That doesn't make sense, unless it's a game completely focused on narrative like Life is Strange or Hellblade 2, which is coming out in a few days. In those cases, 30 fps won't be too much of a hindrance.
Thats you. There are other peoples with difrent needs. I always choose graphic over performance no matter what. I want best possible graphic and 30fps doesnt bother me.
I think the only problem is the major cities in starfield, I think this is because the creation engine lacks mesh shaders, adding mesh shaders to remove objects that are not visible to the field of view inside those demanding areas would be a very good choice to add, so that we can see higher frame rates..
I have a TV that can do 120hz VRR but only HDR not Dolby Vision at that refresh rate. I don’t really ever notice the difference between properly calibrated HGIG HDR vs Dolby Vision so when playing a multiplayer shooter I use 120 without Dolby. I’m confused by the table at the start of this video. Is it saying to get VRR I have to be in 120hz mode on my Xbox and Tv? Even if I want to play in 60fps target? Ideally I’d play 60fps, visual mode, Dolby vision with my Xbox set to 60fps mode.
Whats that TV/monitor menu @11:10 ? I mean brand & model ? Btw. Looks like performance -60 or visuals 40fps is the way to play on my LG OLED (120hz VRR) i LOVE IT that they added "uncapped" even tho it dont really makes sense to play with it..
Running uncapped on visual mode series X OMG the game has its stutters in big areas but overall the level of detail your gettingbis crazy. You can now imagine what stuff feels like now that its so textured
It sounds as though they unlocked the settings that TH said they had when testing the game originally. "It hits 60 but not in all areas stably". Just think how much better the performance will be once they implement FSR3 when it becomes available for console at sometime soon.
It's certainly understandable why the game has the performance, visual and design limitations it does, (and maybe this isn't in DF's purview) but it's totally valid to question Bethesda's design sensibilities that continue to hobble their games. It's novel I guess that a cheese wheel stays where I drop it no matter where I go, but both Starfield and Fallout 76 show clear, significant problems that Bethesda admits are because of object persistance---problems that get in the way of basic interaction with the game and the game's core systems. Yet they rolled ahead with a loot-driven online service game with a severely restricted inventory and Stafield with the performance, visual, and other issues that they're still now working to iron out. Is that worth it? (& no disrespect to clearly talented and hardworking developers here, but from a critical/artistic perspective I don't think these design priorities are serving these works) "So Preoccupied With Whether Or Not They Could, They Didn't Stop To Think If They Should..."
Don't disagree with most of what you said, but the whole live service game push at Bethesda was due to Zenimax. It was happening for other Bethesda published titles as well
When will xbox start to use fsr3? I remember that amd showcase and they said beggining of 2024, it was a big thing then cause it showed dramatic increase in fps, but this is fsr2 still? What happened with that

I like Starfield so far. Not perfect at all but solid open world Bethesda rpg in space, so you know what you're getting. I think a lot of the hate is unwarranted.
If you enjoy it enjoy it! The internet tried to make people feel bad for enjoying the game, just gotta filter it out. If you just reviewed twitter you would think this was the worse game ever created.
Its really not sadly, id say most people agree starfield ended up at a pretty bland spot, where its neither a good exploration game, nor a good RPG really, because they just stopped halfway in between the 2 genres... who want 1000 planets when 98% are useless... Who wants an "Open World" game with loading screens every 5km or evertyime you need to move anywhere. The game has its positives, but compared to their other games it basically missed the mark in every spot... It really was imo bad decisions from Bethesda that got them this hate, and i believe they (as a company) deserve it so they can hopefully get their shit together (which i doubt)...
That's because the game stops being good when you realize that what you see in the first few hours is the ONLY thing you will ever be seeing. Exploration SUCKS. It's just the same procedurally generated crap on every planet and the box of puzzle pieces it's pulling from is small enough that you are going to start seeing all the same elements reused constantly. All your left with is the same gameplay loop we've had since Fallout 3. Which fair enough if that's all you need but I want to actually play a game from a company that's creative development didn't stall out in the Bush years.
So much better. Really enjoying the survival part of it too. Playing on very hard has actually given the game a much needed challenge and you need to actually take cover. They’ve balanced it nicely. Can only keep on getting better as time goes on.
Although it says they don't recommend using Visuals mode at 60fps, I do it, and it seems to do a great job! It's not perfect, but it's not 30fps, and that makes me happy.
To be fair and this isn't a defense for Bethy but just in general PC gaming ruined console gaming for me years ago. If PC gaming was never a thing we wouldn't care about FPS at all.

I'm at the game beginning and it's between 70-80 fps.
Obviously, in comparison to 30 fps it's a big difference.

Just moved to PC as of last night (R5 7600 plus a 7900 GRE) because I got tired of being told what resolution/frame rate I can play games at. Starfield was actually the game that pushed me to finally leave the console and move to PC. I say this as someone who really likes Starfield and put a couple hundred hours in on Series X before moving to PC. Regardless, I'm happy that the game is now performing much better on the Series X, the 30 FPS experience was jarring to say the least, especially after playing Fallout 4 at 4K60.

Portal 2 was great at release...probably the last such game.
Imagine being grateful you did at all
Honestly it was really good at release. Yeah its defo way better now but it's mostly for QoL reasons. Myself and lots of people I know had an absolut blast playing through from launch day.
And a Bugthesda game at that!
I played it at release and the only bug I encountered was one spinnnng person all playthrough.
Hope Bethesda do further optimization in future patches to improve those areas where FPS tanks.
Given its a CPU bottleneck, I wouldn't hold your breath.
Especially in Akila city and New Atlantis
Considering how Bethesda's level of care has been for this game since launch, you'll likely have a better chance wishing for world peace and a 10 inch shwang.
That ancient engine is simply at its limits. Maybe modders can do some mesh and texture optimizations to lower resource usage like they have done for previous Bethesda games. If they even care enough for this thoroughly mediocre and disappointing game anymore at this point.

(& no disrespect to clearly talented and hardworking developers here, but from a critical/artistic perspective I don't think these design priorities are serving these works)
"So Preoccupied With Whether Or Not They Could, They Didn't Stop To Think If They Should..."
Ive been saying this all along. If the way you make your game proves impossible to deliver stable performance, maybe change the way you make the game.
Don't disagree with most of what you said, but the whole live service game push at Bethesda was due to Zenimax. It was happening for other Bethesda published titles as well

@djbpresents9584 They didn't lie, they were saying that it's fallout in space.
