I'm a half-New Englander in Texas and I want to go back for more artery clogging goodness. In 2018 I ate at the Clam Box in Ipswich four times during my week's stay.
I used to have an Aunt and Uncle who lived in Essex and have amazing memories of sitting at the table with the fam. I ate so much of those fried clams. Was watching a completely unrelated video when this popped up in the suggestion box. So many good memories. Had no idea about the history of the place until now which makes those memories even better! I'm really craving those fried clams now.

If you really have been eating fried seafood your whole life, how is it you haven't dropped dead yet? This food has got to be a cardiovascular system's worst nightmare,
When I was a kid I spent my summers on Cape Cod. In the town of Yarmouth there was a place called "Jerry's" on Rte 28. I used to work there serving ice cream and peeled onions for the onion rings. Jerry's use to have the best fried clams around. People would travel for miles to get them. I would go into the walk in cooler to get things and while inside I would peer at the clams inside the small container they were packed in. They were still alive and wiggling. The secret to good fried clams is hot hot grease. "Jerry's" is still there but Jerry himself is no longer the owner. Jerry was a workaholic during the summer months who worked sixteen hours a day seven days a week. He could be cranky too. When summer season ended his relatives would run the store during off season and his wife would not let him step foot inside the store. Jerry and his wife were good people.

@@JP1NYC the gallbladder is an organ found by the liver that connects to the liver and pancreas via ducts (think of it like a balloon bellow the liver that can inflate and deflate as needed). It helps the liver produce and store bile (a type of acidic acid) that turns fat into fatty acids that your body can digest and absorb. Overconsumption of fatty foods such as fried foods can cause an accumulation of cholesterol in the body and in the gallbladder. If the gallbladder can't break these fats quickly they turn into gallstones (think of these as stones of various shapes and sizes that cannot be digested by your body nor escape the gallbladder, they just keep accumulating). You then essentially have a balloon (the gallbladder) full of them that will overtime get bigger and accumulate. They don't go anywhere, they just stay in this balloon. Since the balloon can no longer deflate and inflate as it used to because now they always have stones inside, if the stones are large enough they can block the duct to the pancreas and liver limiting the amount of bile that is excreted to these organs. This is not a good thing as you can experience severe discomfort and referred pain; meaning the right side of your upper belly won't be hurting but instead you'll feel pain and discomfort on your right shoulder/scapula for no apparent reason (that's referred pain). Worst case scenario, the gallbladder bursts inside your body spilling bile into your abdominal cavity which can lead to sepsis (blood poisoning) and if left untreated it can kill you. If the gallbladder is removed through surgery or laparoscopy you can 100% live without it, but you cannot consume fried foods in such big quantities (such as in this video) as you'll feel extremely grossed out, you'll feel like you need to puke, or will get diarrhea because your body cannot break down the fats into fatty acids anymore.

Yes, that is a lot of money lol I live right on the southern Maine coast and I can assure you that is a lot of money. You can get a fisherman’s platter at Ken’s place, Clam Bake, Bay Haven or many other places for a quarter of the price. Granted everything is inflated in Massachusetts and people will pay it. I personally thin fried clams are gross. Most clam necks and bellies with sand in them.
I am grateful I live in a maritime country and have plenty of seafood. He paid 250+ USD on this, you can have this for as little as 50-80 in my hometown. But still, experiencing food from other places is a very good adventure.
Mark is such a sweetheart and it's always a joy to watch him. I was surprised with that massive of a platter, individual plates were not offered, lemon slices, more sauce and malt vinegar, etc. Am I the only one that kind of wondered about that?
I hope they gave him a discount...honestly, even if they gave it to him for free it would be money well spent considering how much free advertising they're getting.

Jeffrey does it again in this piece, as he muttered. “Mmmm a Mountain”., after gorging a huge fried platter of fish filled with his handfuls of food-to-belly treats. Great stuff!
I absolutely love New England and the availability of fresh seafood. It would be well worth the cost of what you ordered. My husband is from New Hampshire and grew up eating fried clams and lobster rolls. I on the other hand grew up in Mississippi and never had a clue what these delights were all about. When I ventured to the North country for the first time to meet my in-laws, my mother-in-law took us to Wells Beach Main for a week. I was in fresh seafood heaven. I go to Woodman’s all the time. They have cool T-shirts and Hoodies. My favorite place to sit is on the picnic tables in the back by the marsh. The lady and I split fried clams and fried scallops. It’s definitely in my top 5 fried seafood joints in New England.
@@Scott-fy7fm it’s still seafood. Just fresh as all hell. Gotta pay the captain, captain has to pay his crew and gas, plus upkeep. It’s a dangerous job with high insurance costs. Sea isn’t always bountiful and can be unforgiving. Gotta pay the plethora of employees that keep the ~300 seat restaurant moving, plus merch and bar. Restaurant margins are slim regardless. Do I need to justify the cost anymore? You pay for what you get. The portions are massive, it’s fresh and delicious and it really hasn’t changed much since it opened, just keeping up with inflation. Well maybe they didn’t eat it themselves but they can give it to the homeless and re-heat it Or at least someone who wants it I mean they paid for it should they have thrown it away instead?

nothing beats summer time with a long drive thru Essex and a stop for a pint or quart of fresh fried clams from Woodmans. makes the drive worth it and a long walk along cranes beach.
That was nice of Jeffrey to take the remaining food down to the employees for them to enjoy. At those prices, I'm sure they don't get to eat these items very often. If Las Vegas has a Heart Attack Grill, then New England has Heart Attack Deep Fryer 😂 Awesome video Mark and Jeffrey and whoever the other guy is 🤷♂️
Nah I work here actually and get to eat the food all the time. You can't get the big items like lobsters or lg clams for free but you can get the smaller sizes just to eat on your break. I usually get the fish plate.
I remember when I would stop on my way to the cape at a roadside clam shack just prior to the bridge and get my fill of fried clams back in the 1970s 😢

I live right on the southern Maine coast and I can assure you that is a lot of money.
That is with an employee discount added. So it's even more than that for you and me.
That's $284 after the 20% employee discount, I think
I am grateful I live in a maritime country and have plenty of seafood. He paid 250+ USD on this, you can have this for as little as 50-80 in my hometown. But still, experiencing food from other places is a very good adventure.
Agree. This platter would run you about 30 U.S. dollars where I'm from. Still, I'd drop money for new tastes and experiences any day.
Dk Trek: What country are you in?
Mark is such a sweetheart and it's always a joy to watch him. I was surprised with that massive of a platter, individual plates were not offered, lemon slices, more sauce and malt vinegar, etc. Am I the only one that kind of wondered about that?
Now that you’ve mentioned it I’m wondering the same.
th-cam.com/video/JS_PlOKii3Y/w-d-xo.htmlcbgfh
My thoughts exactly. Awkward
I too thought that they were very stingy with the sauces.
I hope they gave him a discount...honestly, even if they gave it to him for free it would be money well spent considering how much free advertising they're getting.
I like how Mark's friend hold his hunger for 10 hours 🤣 preparation for the mountain of seafried

I LOVE when mark and Jeffrey do videos together you can tell they always have fun and have a great time doing what they are doing and they’re so respectful and kind to each other and everyone.
Around midnight, I watched this. I got so hungry for seafood. Then, afterwards, I wanted a Revere Beach Roast Beef sandwich. It all looked so good. I'm going to one or both of those places.. probably this weekend. Thanks Mark! I loved this.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful video.
you never went to New Orleans? c'mon the best fish anywhere
Mike’s clam Shack has a good seafood platter in Wells. I grew up in Sanford, Maine. The next town over.
mississippi and louisiana have some damn good fish/seafood as well 🔥
Yes,
I have been to New Orleans many times as an adult and yes the seafood there is wonderful. As a career soldier I traveled the world and never went back to Mississippi.

I go to Woodman’s all the time. They have cool T-shirts and Hoodies. My favorite place to sit is on the picnic tables in the back by the marsh. The lady and I split fried clams and fried scallops. It’s definitely in my top 5 fried seafood joints in New England.
Thar platter price was ridiculously overpriced, how arw their normal prices?
Own a restaurant or become a fisherman, then reply.
@@veegames3364 that platter is well over twice the cost it would be anywhere around here
I really like the way you present the culture of every place you've visited through their food. You are one of the youtubers I really admire because of your authenticity and respect to other cultures.
As someone who works in a restaurant, (I've waited tables for 12 years) I can tell you right now if a customer came and offered me a platter of 1 hour old fried food that had been picked over by strangers' hands, I would laugh in their face. There's no way that staff was THRILLED to eat their cold leftovers. I'm sorry but you guys ordered way too much food. I'm not a hater. I've been watching Mark for years and this is the first negative thing I've ever commented.
Well maybe they didn’t eat it themselves but they can give it to the homeless and re-heat it Or at least someone who wants it I mean they paid for it should they have thrown it away instead?
That platter was disgusting.
Definitely agree with you. Not a chance I would eat that.
Who would want to eat it after they had moved it about with their hands did any one see them wash their hands at any time.
I thought the same thing too. Who would be happy eating a stranger's left overs. Yuk.
