    Excellent video again! A very thorough explanation of E collar training. Thank you for your time in detailing the training, I hope this will save many dogs a horrible experience of non effective training using this tool.🙏

    Thank you Larry - you have answered a very specific question that we have with using the e-collar. Deer are not a problem for my dog off leash, but recall of my dog wanting to go to the neighbor’s house to visit his buddy isn’t perfect. I will use the long line and work on recall command and tap the e collar on a higher level if/when he doesn’t respond to the recall and praise/play as soon as he responds.

    Timely advice, my puppy just ignored me for the first time at the dog park, big time, yesterday & I used the e-collar but not at a high enough level of stim. I really thought he'd come at a lower, continuous level but it didn't work at all. I'm gonna take this advice for our next visit but also leave a leash on him just in case. Either way, what happened yesterday won't be happening again. Thank you!

    I used it as you advise on the recall and it worked. Then I made exactly the mistake you describe by setting not setting the level high enough to be truly aversive, then bumped the level up just a little etc. He (a German Shepard, fairly high drive probably because of inbreeding, not a working line) became more and more used to it. Now I am at the highest level on my particular e collar and a single tap doesn't work well anymore. What is your advice? Should I get a collar for higher drive dogs? Should I use two collars? (I believe Haz at ShieldK9 does that with one of his dogs.) He is a car chaser.

    I'm still working on reconditioning my dogs to the E-collar after mistakes I made. They are learning it's ok to leave my side when I say 'free'. Obviously they have a great recall with the E-collar.😊
    Thanks Larry.

    How do you decide how high to go? My dog works on a 3 or 4 on a dogtra arc (both at home and at our neighborhood park) and he’s pretty sensitive and responds well to the stim. Do you have a method for picking a number without dialling up?

    Was wondering this.. bought and read your book... I figured you wrote the book for someone who has no idea how to train dogs or maybe first time dog owners. Ive owned several dogs and know dog behavior decently well and have decided to use your methods but alter it a bit based on my previous training foundation with my specific dog.

    Does the tool then become useless for dogs who have learned to become accustomed to various levels? I.e. if the handler only raises the level from 8 to 15, then a bit more etc. and the dog ignores it. Does there come a day when it’s no longer possible to re-teach the dog properly?

    • @christianhershman2786
      @christianhershman2786 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Training is not learning based…IMHO
      E-collar is a great tool, but should not be relied on or used. If you don’t have really good recall with your dog. Relationship first control and influence like an authoritative parent…👊🐕

    • @caththomas1507
      @caththomas1507 วันที่ผ่านมา

      But how do people then fix a recall like the lady in Larry’s video that have done great work but can’t recall her dog off dear? Or adopt a dog with a long reinforcement history of chasing wildlife?

    • @christianhershman2786
      @christianhershman2786 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ Unfortunately, most people will not like my answer. Not to mention it’s very difficult in this kind of a form to do a deep dive, mostly because these issues are complex, just like our relationships with humans. But, ultimately dogs are very good at accommodating us. Most responses can be marked off as superficial. The dogs work around us. The really good at it. Many repetitions of the long line is absolutely necessary. But, first you have to be able to audit your dog And make sure it’s perceiving you as the leader. And this is where the right method is necessary. The other thing to mention is this can take months if not years To reach a high-level of connection where you are above the dogs drive, therefore you are the “reward”…So this is a journey based initially on the current relationship and drive/temperament of the dog , because they are individuals🐕. IMHO

    • @caththomas1507
      @caththomas1507 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for your reply. Yes, I can see how difficult that would be to achieve with a dog that hasn’t had that bond with its person for years and then you’re trying to be their leader. I do understand what you’re saying.

    As an average Joe myself. I love the e collar for my chiweenie. Did not use any professional help from anyone. Just TH-cam videos and lots of practice. I almost never use a regular leash now and my dog heels perfect we even go biking and he’ll be right next to me at 23 mph. The only problem I’ve had is when e collar doesn’t make proper contact with skin. Does anyone know what to do with dogs that have long fur? I got a second dog that I want to teach ecollar. Can I just shave a spot on her neck for it to touch skin? Or is that wrong and bad for their fur?

    • @NielsO-t3v
      @NielsO-t3v 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I had to shave, and it works.
      have tried 1" contacts and winged contacts but on a finnish lapphund it didnt work.. the coat was just too long and thick and never got reliable contact.
      Additional benefit is now I can use a comfort pad, like the 4 very short contacts, so a bit less uncomfortable for the dogs than 2 pins sticking in its neck

    • @mrmcallister

      I second the wing collar, and if you have lots of money get a Martin systems collar or complete set up. It tells you when the collar is in contact and not- but it’s really expensive.

      @@mrmcallister yes, very tight. The coats of these dogs is something else haha, like samoyeds. Very hard to make stable contact without shaving a little square. Luckily you won't see the shaven part normally, all the long hair falls over it. So you only find it if you look for it. So its not a big deal to shave a small spot.

    Larry, I follow you and respect your experience. That said, I believe there is ZERO guarantee that your preset 50 would have worked on the Rodie in your scenario.
    Now, 50 IS typically very strong but subjective as it really comes down to how rewarding the dogs’ activity is to itself; its level of adrenaline/cortisol, auditory exclusion, etc.
    Your 50 “tap” could have very well not been enough OR it very well could have been aversive enough to have gotten a vocalization from the dog.
    If either was the case what then?

  • @rptrick79
    @rptrick79 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    So if the collar is implemented and introduced in a certain way and trained correctly, the dog should never (in a perfect world) need to experience it again. Because the collar has been used to reinforce the already trained commands in a way where they get to choose escape/avoidance, which intern allows them more freedom for fun shit?
    After all that, its still a JIC safety net for them to be able to continue free, safer lives where they won't be stuffed to death with liver treats to gain their attention.

    • @thankmelater1254
      @thankmelater1254 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think you did not understand correctly. When the situation comes where the dog is going to be in danger from not obeying..suppose they are frozen for that second intent to go after a wild pig or a bear - then Larry would call the dog to him, wait a second to see if the dog begins to return to him, and if not, he'd use high power to teach the dog to never ever do that thing which will likely cost him injury or death.
