It’s always other black women that i ever feel threatened by, they call me stuck up or say “you’re acting funny” when in fact i’m just a quiet person with social anxiety. Even had a black girl talk trash about me wearing my natural hair out when hers had a relaxer in it. Yet i’ve had white girls compliment me on my natural hair. Crazy right

I really hate myself because I can’t do the “usual black girl things” that are almost expected like being able to dance and it makes me feel so bad. There has always been something about me that has hindered me from joining in. I’ve also been shamed for the health of my hair and it makes me feel horrible. And the worst thing is that it’s other black girls doing the bullying. We should be sticking together not shaming each other.

This was great. Often times being the quirky black girl is lonely, most times we are not the chosen ones.

    1. Don't subscribe to the narrative
    2. Believe that you're the main character
    3. Conforming is not the answer
    4. The awkward black girl is still bad ass
    5. To be the quirky, awkward black girl is to be a multifaceted being

I feel so weird sometimes when people approach me they expect one thing and they kind of discard me when I'm not that person. When I fully try to be myself I get judged so I feel stuck and alone.Im happy alone and that's it I'm trying to accept that I may always he rejected and that's fine.

I have to say, this was such a insightful and touching video and I relate so much. I just turned 36 and see so much of myself in what this young lady spoke of. I have always been that "awkward black girl" and have always known that I was not like how most black girls are socialized into being. It took me a long time to really learn to love myself as I am. I was born and raised in an inner city neighborhood where my whole community was black. Then when I was 12 I moved to another state and attended private schools until I graduated college. The private schools were primarily white, but it was the quality of the education that my mother encouraged. Yet in both realms i've always felt not black enough for black people or too black for some white people. I always felt like I wanted to belong when I was younger but always felt like a misfit.
I remember my first year in my primarily white college , as soon as I heard there was an Afro/Latino Heritage club I swiftly joined. I wanted to feel more black. Most of the meetings i sat in a corner by myself, lol. To shy and awkward to introduce myself as a freshman on campus. And not really feeling a connection with anyone besides the color of my skin. Then in my doom i made friends with the white girls but felt like i couldnt really relate to them about much. One of the best things thats ever happened is that the Good Lord sent me my tribe; a diverse group of young people. We were black, spanish, white, indian, asian, but our common thread was that we were all misfits within the typical confines of our respective ethnic groups. We liked Anime, and rock music, and we enjoyed reading, and Jnco pants, and hot topic, and i felt at home with them. After college I was thrust into the world now without the comfort of my tribe and through the years i have come to terms with who i am. I don't think i really accepted myself until i was 26 years old. Im tall, and i love wearing my hair in twists, i "talk white" , i like to read , i play guitar, i love bluegrass and indie music, i cry at touching commercials, i love old Jane Austen time period movies, i love museums and am a history nerd, when i see people i haven't seen in a while i get really excited and do the puppy hands thing ( i dont know why, lol) . I have grown to love myself and all of my quirks because I am me, and different and thats ok .

The universe connected me to this video when I needed it😭been the awkward black girl all my life and tried so hard to be like everyone else when I was younger but was unfulfilled doing so, even as a adult I still feel like I don’t exactly "fit in" but being yourself is always the best option 😊

Thank you so much for making this video! I went to a predominantly white high school and was an outsider to my white counterparts. It was very traumatizing. I ended up going to an HBCU for undergrad and I felt like an outsider there too. I was always too black for the white kids and too white for the black kids. I’m now 24 years old living in a predominantly black city and still get isolated by people who I thought I was cool with because i’m seen as “quirky” and “weird”. Ive been learning that i’m not meant to be like everyone else and that it’s better that I spend time in solitude and work on embracing who I really am. Ive noticed that ive tried watering myself down and conforming in order to have friends and that’s just not how I want to live anymore. My uniqueness is my superpower and I refuse to give it up in order to please judgmental people.

I was always wierd and still is and I feel like during my teenage years I did a lot of dumb things just to fit in and be normal but it still wasn’t authentic because I felt like I was playin a role all the time. Even now as an adult I’m stilling finding my tribe dating is kind of difficult because I’m not fitting any mold so I either come off lame or not black enough or too wierd and so I just keep to myself and do what’s best for me.

Seeing this video is definitely perfect timing. ❤️ Thank you.
I feel like we always associated being black with certain behaviors/aesthetics.
I grew up around more affluent black individuals. So when I went outside of that space and interacted with other black people from other dynamics, they saw me as less black. I feel like this is because like you said … most black people they were around didnt appear to be most similar to me. It wasn’t until I went to college and realized we flourish and thrive in many, many, many ways ❤️

This video needs to blow up! ❤️‍🔥 I can relate so much I had so many different things about me and wasn’t exactly on one side or acted as one way and it was sooooo hard for me to fit in middle school and high school. I just had manners and a different mentality, different in many ways and I still feel this way at 21. This video really made me feel so much better about myself. ♥️

I'm not familiar with black culture or white culture, but black people see me as being closer to white people, and white people see me as the ghetto girl. It's so weird at 22 like I want to be myself. It seems like college just amplifies this grouping even more.

Ah thank you so much for this video!! This month, I've been working on dedicating myself and my time to building my own confidence. It's so crazy and also validating to me how much I can relate to practically everything that you were talking about! I'm currently in college (PWI) right now and going through the same experience of trying to not conform to stereotypes that my peers expect me to be. It can be a lot of pressure for others to expect us to know exactly who we are right out the gate, but this video allowed me to see and realize that I'm not alone 💗💗
