- This episode of HOT ROD Unlimited screams with action from 200-mph street cars at one of the most grueling events in all of motorsports: HOT ROD Drag Week, presented by Gear Vendors. This is the most brutal test anywhere of real drag-racing, street-driven cars, as the competitors hit the road for 1,400 miles to race five times at four different drag strips in five days in a battle to post the lowest average elapsed time at the end of the week. The winner is crowned the HOT ROD Fastest Street Car in America. In this video, we'll follow the chase for that title in Drag Week's most outrageous class, called Unlimited. Imagine cars that run 7 seconds in the quarter mile, in excess of 200 mph, and then drive on public roads-in the rain, over potholes, whatever it takes-to make it to the next race day to do it again. Sorry guys. The 5500hp is definitely a typo. The '57 Chevy is actually 2500hp.

I love Larry's comment about the sheriff. I was following him for about 30 miles before I lost him at a light... just before he got pulled over. Needless to say, the whole time I was following him on two lane blacktop thru Texas, we rarely dipped below 85! Yep, he is the fastest both on and off the track! :)

Man, these cars are crazy! I went to one of the Mopar Nationals competitions, and saw a funny car run a 6.6, and when the guy finally came on the throttle full, you could FEEL the sound of the engine. And these are street legal cars, running high 6's! Respect for these guys, definitely.
Two incredible racers who built and maintained two of the baadest cars to ever go down the dragstrip. Hope today's future racers learn and have the class that these gentlemen have. They are both winners. Thanks guys.

great stuff ! been a while since i have had a chance to watch something like this and let me tell ya it gives me goose bumps to be able to watch this. i just love this stuff and have hot rod mags dating back to the the 70's. love motortrend and want to thank you for posting so many quality videos that just make me feel like i 'm a kid again back at the racetrack racing again. thank you so much. A true car fanatic doesn't compare vehicles who have different purposes, but appreciates them in their own right. The veyron was built to beat the top speed record for a road going production vehicle. The cars in this video were hand built through countless man hours to live by the 1/4 mile. Both are eaqully as amazing.

Tunechi Lee -you probably already know this by now but Lutz is one of the top racers on "street oulaws"
you guys should talk to SPEED channel and try to turn this into a TV show somehow. Something like PINKS All Out but instead of just showing races show the traveling part too, and focus on all the classes instead of one. That'd be pretty cool I think. Awesome video!!

The Veyron SS has exactly *half* that amount of horsepower, 1200hp. This is automotive insanity at its finest!
It's not just the speed, it's the time, he got going that fast at the end because the car has so much top end power, but his launch wasn't as good as the best times. It's not just HP, it's traction too.
I normally am not in to drag racing, but you guys made that very interesting!
I see Jeff Lutz and his 57 Chevy ran a 215mph 6.90 pass at a NMRA Lone Star Shootout street race last month in Baytown Texas ! That is faster than any NHRA Pro Stock has ever run.

Like many sports, once you understand the finer points, one can appreciate the finer points. From the outside, drag racing looks "easy"... but up at the pointy end of the sport, these guys have so much knowledge, and to get one of those cars down to the end in one piece, with a good time, is not easy... it was a great vid, good to promote drag racing.
Those American Street Car Class just smashed the whole project for the Bugatti Veyron that take them so many years to make one super fast car in the streets with 1001 hp
Probably because these cars are some of the hardest accelerating cars in all of automotive racing. THE fastest if you consider the top classes like Funny Car and Top Fuel, among a few others. Nothing beats such awesome displays of horsepower.

They don't think how fast the car is they know how fast the car is.
3 seconds is huge in a drag race. Power to times is not a linear graph, it gets exponentially harder the faster you go. Going from 200mpht o 210mph is a ridiculously harder than 50mph to 60mph.

Once you're geared to run 200+, its not like you've got 4.11s out back. Figure 200 at 9-10,000 rpm is 3000 at 60 mph. I remember the Six Seconds car used to take the whole blower off between stops, and the black Camaro from years past would cut the blower drive belt off before hitting the road and install a new one at the next track.
Not only do these cars have balls and do 7 seconds, they can also drive up and down for days.
Who said old technology doesn't work? Push Rod motors running 7s and grabbing groceries. Get some!

I'd probably be dead pretty quickly if given the opportunity to drive one of those on the street. I didn't even think it was possible to have a street legal car with 3200 horsepower.

Going on this trip is on my bucket-list. Just as a spectator to see these cars in person. Building cars that can do the 1400 miles AND run like this seems almost impossible.

A low elapsed time is down to a good launch (=low 60 ft. time). The difference in trap speed may be down to the car with the higher speed having traction issues at the start and having more horse power. Did you also notice Dave Ahokas running a 7.00 at only 194 mp/h?
It would have been great if they showed us their timeslips so we would be able to see where the difference is (i.e. 60 ft., 330 ft., 660 ft. and 1000 ft.).

The fastest RB powered skyline that I know of is an R32, and it runs low 7's. there's ONE one of those. There are literally Hundreds, if not thousands of 7 second American cars "rattling" around the US. It also doesn't have any "creature comforts" and if you think It would make the trip that these cars were forced to make, you're kidding yourself. It would be cool to see him try though!
