    Ever tried learning any of Scotland's languages beyond English? I'd love to hear your experience! For me, delving into Scots has been very exciting - getting to understand more about its place in modern Scotland and also finally knowing what Scotland's favourite poetry is about! Scotland's languages are a mystery to many, so hopefully my lesson will help you understand what Scots is about.
    Now only to find a place to get a good Burns Night supper and enjoy all of this knowledge while someone much more qualified recites it for me...?

    I grew up in Southern California and we used the words "reek" and "spew" all the time. I had no idea that they originated in Scotland.

    Loved Michael's insights and your take on the poem. Also, how is no one commenting on the cinematic mastery of the intro and outro shots in the Holyrood park?

    Edinburgh ‘Scot’s’ can be confusing as it has a bit of Romani mixed in as well as even some Arabic brought back from soldiers in world war 2. And btw as Doric is from around Dundee the Scots spoken in Edinburgh was sometimes referred to as ‘Attic’

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ooh is that so? Interesting, need to look into it! The inclusion of Romani influence is also super fascinating to me!

    • @loxley75
      @loxley75 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Kakibot there’s so many Roma words in lowland Scot’s, driech, Shan, sleekit, chav, gadjie, glaiket, haver, pagger, wheesht… too many to think of. And words like shufty and bint are both from Arabic.

    About mispelling: I just read a litlle about "burgh"... and well, I guess it's very fitting for Scots speakers to not yet agree on the spelling of many words nowadays!

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well that’s weirdly reassuring! I guess thinking about my own experience, there tends to be “one very wrong” and then “a couple that’s right” 😅 when it comes to pronunciation!

    Scotand have their own language Scottish Gaelic, like Ireland. As the Roman empire conquered all of Europe all nations speak a version of Latin however our native tribes defended Scotland/Ireland and maintained our native tongue.
    Although, Scots is still it's own language in its own right although just a very strong dialect of English it's very different

    My daughter said I looked like you. I think she's right, also the silly face you made, I make those as well. Ironically speaking I have mostly Scottish heritage. However, I have never been to Scotland and boy! would I love to visit someday. On a side, none important note, I don't exactly have red hair, my brother got that for sure. My hair has always been blonde and over time it darkened but it always kept this warm honey dull color to it. THough, when I go in the sun my hair brightens up and is shiny and you can see more of the warmth. My hairstylist recently told me that my hair was strawberry blonde and that I just needed to get in the sun more often. I absolutely loved hearing that my hair was strawberry blonde. I accepted that my hair was completely and naturally blonde comapared all the fakes out there. I love honey and I also loved when my husbanc would call it a honey blonde. ANyways, SO NOT IMPORTANT> oddly, I enjoy sharing facts and tid-bits. It's like when you find an easter egg in a film. Pretty cool.
