Ever tried learning any of Scotland's languages beyond English? I'd love to hear your experience! For me, delving into Scots has been very exciting - getting to understand more about its place in modern Scotland and also finally knowing what Scotland's favourite poetry is about! Scotland's languages are a mystery to many, so hopefully my lesson will help you understand what Scots is about.
Now only to find a place to get a good Burns Night supper and enjoy all of this knowledge while someone much more qualified recites it for me...?

Proud of my wife for learning what I couldn't despite living in this country for 36 years...
Well done hen.
Fur a wuman who wisnae born here. Yae did a braw job.
“ Be well proud, you made a fantastic effort “.
It’s obviously not your first language.
Be proud. 🏴
It was so much fun taking part in this. Well done on learning Scots! You recited the poem really well. Ye did weel!
Oooh hi Michael! I am so sorry I totally forgot to send you a link despite having it on my to-do list 😭
@@Kakibot that's ok. I did send you a message earlier but I found the link. I discovered the video was published because one of the librarians at the uni said she saw me in the video ha ha. Great work!
I grew up in Southern California and we used the words "reek" and "spew" all the time. I had no idea that they originated in Scotland.
Kat, great job, many Scottish people can't do the poem justice.
Well done on reciting Ode tova Haggis! Really enjoyed this video
It's been a challenge for sure 😅 can't remember the last time I had to memorise a poem - but it felt good for the brain! .)
I forgot about the Scots translations of the Roald Dahl books! We owned a copy of "The Eejits" (The Twits) when I was wee 😊
There is a woman on social media Miss Punnypenny who does a Scottish word of the day.
Loved Michael's insights and your take on the poem. Also, how is no one commenting on the cinematic mastery of the intro and outro shots in the Holyrood park?
For language nerds intrigued by Scots and its relation to / interaction with English, check out the video "The Linguistics of Limmy's Show" by Michael Lindsey.
Friggen awesome effort. You are braver than me 😀
I tried 😅 thanks!
This was so interesting!! Loved the poem 😊
Well done Michael, very interesting ❤
I'm so impressed!
❤thanks for sharing interesting 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! .)
Late 1970's I moved from the west coast to the east in primary 1. Got put into elocution lessons straight away as I spoke too much Scots...
Reek is to smoke or emit smoke/scent etc
Tnks for nice video
Edinburgh ‘Scot’s’ can be confusing as it has a bit of Romani mixed in as well as even some Arabic brought back from soldiers in world war 2. And btw as Doric is from around Dundee the Scots spoken in Edinburgh was sometimes referred to as ‘Attic’
Ooh is that so? Interesting, need to look into it! The inclusion of Romani influence is also super fascinating to me!
@@Kakibot there’s so many Roma words in lowland Scot’s, driech, Shan, sleekit, chav, gadjie, glaiket, haver, pagger, wheesht… too many to think of. And words like shufty and bint are both from Arabic.
Very interesting video! 🎉🎉 and your teacher is cute! 😊❤
Right? Michael was amazing - so lucky that the one Scots teacher on the platform was so keen to help me with this video! .)
I'm a 35 year old Glaswegian and this is me just finding out that the English dont use the word spool?!
I was caught out in Yorkshire when I asked for a Streecher which turned out to be a cloaths pole. Who knew?
Hello i hope you are fine. Your videos are very informative. Very nice.
I need to ask about giffnock place which is located in glasgow you have any idea about that place ?
The Glottal stop is a distinctly British linguistic feature but it is not "traditionally" Scots.
About mispelling: I just read a litlle about "burgh"... and well, I guess it's very fitting for Scots speakers to not yet agree on the spelling of many words nowadays!
Well that’s weirdly reassuring! I guess thinking about my own experience, there tends to be “one very wrong” and then “a couple that’s right” 😅 when it comes to pronunciation!
Hello dear I would like to move to Scotland I’m French. What first step would you recommend me ?
Scotand have their own language Scottish Gaelic, like Ireland. As the Roman empire conquered all of Europe all nations speak a version of Latin however our native tribes defended Scotland/Ireland and maintained our native tongue.
Although, Scots is still it's own language in its own right although just a very strong dialect of English it's very different
Appolgies, I commented before even starting the video 😂 I enjoy them all you do Scotland very proud. Thanks for your appreciation of our beauty which ie very much your home now too 😊🏴
Hoo wi' wather in Scalland?
Scots and English share a lot of the same vocab, but meanings are extremely divergent. English Knock is Chap in Scots, while knock means steal
CANNAE (can not) is not the same word as
CANNY/CANNIE
also different from
CANTIE
The secret to scot-british English is to say eh, and ah instead of ‘um’ and the rest of the accent flows from that...!
Wha’s like us?
❤Hello beautiful women and wenderful people and nice contry
My daughter said I looked like you. I think she's right, also the silly face you made, I make those as well. Ironically speaking I have mostly Scottish heritage. However, I have never been to Scotland and boy! would I love to visit someday. On a side, none important note, I don't exactly have red hair, my brother got that for sure. My hair has always been blonde and over time it darkened but it always kept this warm honey dull color to it. THough, when I go in the sun my hair brightens up and is shiny and you can see more of the warmth. My hairstylist recently told me that my hair was strawberry blonde and that I just needed to get in the sun more often. I absolutely loved hearing that my hair was strawberry blonde. I accepted that my hair was completely and naturally blonde comapared all the fakes out there. I love honey and I also loved when my husbanc would call it a honey blonde. ANyways, SO NOT IMPORTANT> oddly, I enjoy sharing facts and tid-bits. It's like when you find an easter egg in a film. Pretty cool.
Neep is a Rutabaga not a Turnip. Scots have got this all screwed up. The 'neep' is a Rutabaga not a turnip.
