Scotland is one of my favourite countries to visit. Though it couldn't be more different than my Mediterranean island home, I feel as if it's a home away from home. The people are so helpful! And I love their accent! Luckily, I'm used to listening to Kevin Bridges on talk shows, so I mostly manage to understand the accent after the first day or two as my brain acclimatises to the sound and rhythm.
I have been to Scotland in 1998. it is magnificent country .The people are polite, decent and helpful. The scenery is unbelievable. everything is marvelous. my greetings from Egypt.
For Brazilian Portuguese speakers is much easier to understand the Scotch accent because we roll the R and the pronounce of the T sounds the same , just like Scotch do
Hi Katharine!!! I can't thank you enough for this most excellent video!!! That's right up my alley, since I truly love all Scottish!!!🏴🏴🏴 "Scotland is like England on steroids!!!" WELL PUT!!!👍👏 Have a great Friday in beautiful England!!! Take care!!!🤝🏴🇩🇪🙋♀️
Your video brings me great memories from the three times we visited Scotland. Last one was just last spring. Wonderful trip on the one direction roads in the Highlands, the NC500. Always friendly and polite people. The endearing word WEE: Wee coffee , wee shop..... Thanks a lot Katharine.
Thank you for introducing the general scottish accent and the scottish culture. It is true, that there is difference between England and Scotland. I remember a man from the UK, who held firmly to be a Scotsman.
Ms. Strawberry, 😊 this time in a gorgeous and appealing Scottish dress delivers again a plethora of insights into the various accents of the UK. What would we do without our weekly dose of Catherine‘s lessons. I am loving it. ❤ … have a great weekend. Cheers …😊
So cool that you made this video! I'm a Norwegian but also 1/12 Scottish from my mom's part of the family and in recent years, I've become very interested in my Scottish roots. I've never been to Scotland but I'd love to visit there someday. I have a tie and a scarf in the pattern of the Davidson clan, the clan my ancestors on my mom's side of the family used to belong to and it reminds me of how connected I feel to Scotland everytime I wear them although I've never been there. The Scottish accent is so charming and fun to listen to, it makes me wanna practice doing that accent myself to honour my roots more. I usually speak with an American accent and it is similar to the Scottish one in some regards (both are rhotic, for instance) but also very different, as it's fairly easy to tell the two apart. You did a great job presenting the Scottish accent in this video! :)
It's so cool, lad. I feel you. Despite me living in Ukraine and being Ukrainian for 95 per cent, I wasn't interested in my culture at all before 2022. Now I feel empowered and proud of what I know about myself. And we share a lot in common with Scottish people in terms of history, especially oppression from impires. Staying strong!
In Ireland Scotland and Wales they speak their own language as well. But in their dialects are also pronounced. I love Irish accent because it is closer to our Urdu accent.
Katharine, In the store that I work at, here in the US, A man who had lost his wallet that I had taken to the customer service rep. I think was from Scotland. He identified himself as George White, I think. It was very charming to hear him talk that way! Also, one of my favourite Scottish actors is Tony Curran from Glasgow. You familiar with him?

Wow! You are spot on when it comes to Scotland. Everything you said is so true. Scotland, as I mentioned in my first novel, is magical and enchanting even when it is raining. I went there last year and it rained a lot but those light rainy and misty days added the mystery and magic against the almost seen Highlands. I could have not said it better. I envy you English people to have this in your backyard. If I lived in England, I would go there at least once a year. If I knew you knew a lot about Scotland and their accents, I would have asked you to be my source material person for my first novel. Oh well, it is published now. I did do the Scottish accent but it was a general one; I used a special website that translates English sentences to general Scottish sentences. I tried very hard to find a person with a Glaswegian accent for my female protagonist but was unsuccessful. My apologies to the people of Glasgow if I got most of it wrong. Anyway, it is good to know. I love the way you do the Scottish accent. I laughed too but it is still much better than what I can do. P.S. You forgot to mention the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Edinburgh. What a great show!
I was in Edimburgh some years ago. It's a very beautiful place. The Highland are amazing and the people are polite and friendly. I hope will go back soon!!! Your video is a gift and a caress to the heart. Thanks bonny lass🎉
Hello Katharine! I had heard the Scottish national anthem, Flower of Scotland, at a rugby match in New Zealand. I like the NZ national anthem, god diffend New Zealand, but I also felt that Flower of Scotland feld me courageous. Thanks for the good video.

Good day bonny lass , the Scottish accent sounds so cute ! Kudos to you, Katharine, for courageously making this video. As someone who is Scottish and who has been a TEFL teacher for many decades, this made me smile. Some of it you had spot on; well done. Other words sounded nothing like anything I've ever heard in any part of Scotland..... which only served to underline all the subtle nuances. Even though I'm trained in phonetics, I don't think I'd be brave enough to attempt to model regional accents of England. (Although I speak six languages, accents are not particularly my strong suit.) Thanks for all the affirming comments on Scottish landscape and culture.
That was bonny, Kath!!! I love your Scottish accent! I don't know Scottland, but I really want to go there now, and try the soup and of course, real Scotch. Ewan McGregor is my favourite actor, too. I loved him in Big Fish, as I also love Tim Burton. Thank you!!!☺
Thank you very much for a WONDERFUL video! I like to know more and more about the language and culture. But I would like to say that your speaking with this accent was BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Katharine, greetings from Brazil! How cool and excellent are all your videos. I always enjoy watching them all. The way you explain and comment on everything is always so calm, clear and so easy, that it's just impossible not to understand the different accents and pronunciations. Btw, this scottish tartan dress👗suits very well on you! Maybe you already have listened to any of Al Stewart songs as his famous "Year of the Cat", or "Time Passages" and "Palace of Versailles", but in case you haven't yet. It's totally worth it!. Al Stewart is scottish and he is one of my favorite singers of the '70s. He has an amazing accent with a very clear pronunciation singing and speaking. The way he pronounces the word "river", in his song Year of the Cat, is interesting, and sounds like "reh-var", instead of "ri-ver", the vowels sound so different. Thanks again for the video Katharine! I wish you a wonderful day and week! 🙂💂💐🦋🌹🐞🌻🐝
@@englishwithkatharine Thank you Katherine for your attention. I'm so glad you liked my comment! You really deserve it! Indeed, that song is amazing and it's one of my favourite songs too! 🙂🎵🎶💂 🇬🇧
Scotland is the first in my bucket list of countries I wanna visit.! So scenic and picture perfect.! I watch various videos of Scotland, Ireland and many other UK countrysides.! Each one has its own charm and beauty.! No wonder, you're one of the most gorgeous girls I've ever seen since you're from one of those villages.! Right? Looking absolutely stunning in this peter pan collar blouse!! A super Bonny lass!!
I really appreciate you and your brilliant lessons. They are very useful for those who aren't living in English-speaking countries. what if beside the accent of Scotland you talk a bit about the culture of that country.
Wonderful ! I am French and 52 years old and discovering all these pretty accents. I had a 15 lessons some time ago with a British writer from Liverpool living in Spain. And I discovered these too many accents in the UK. It is like a parallel world ! Some troubles I got with the serial named "the responder".. when you are not used to listen to them ! I had to reward several times..with subtitles to make a link with my brain 😅. Wow ! But then now I can figure It out! Thank you for your explanations.. Christophe from Paris France.
Hey Katharine. Interesting as always! I think you made quite a decent Scottish accent. 🥰 I’ve got friends in Scotland, and although they split up, I still keep in touch with him-the Scottish one. He always tries to throw me off balance when texting by adding Scottish slang and words. Never given him the satisfaction, though. I usually Google it instead. 😉 During my last visit to Edinburgh, I was totally dumbstruck at passport control. The passport officer spoke pretty fast with a very noticeable Scottish accent, and I literally didn’t understand a word. 😅 By the way, in one of your previous videos, you recommended reading The Wind in the Willows. I’ve read a lot of English novels over the last thirty-odd years or so, but never The Wind in the Willows. I’ve seen it animated as a child. It’s just an utterly lovable book and story. ❣📖 I didn’t know beforehand that it was written in 1908. So, I love how the story also tells a more underlying story about the society and time period it was written in-at least I think it can be seen as such.
A very cool and amusing view of the Scottish Accent, it is a lot more rugged than British standard. It's funny they way they join vowels to pronounce words like Mouse -> MOOSE, Head-> HEED. And also I'd never ever heard of Cullen Skink soup; I will definitely look to find a cafe or restaurant that serves it when i go to Scotland. Thank you Katherine, I've subscribed and bought you a coffee
Just celebrating my birthday today dear, missed last week's lesson but glad that I got connected with you with this lesson today.. So, take care and have a wonderful weekend to you my dear and here I am off to wet my whistle on my big day.. Lol 🤩 Hugs.xoxoxo Gams ❤️

Hello, Katharine.😊 I found "Scottish Special" so interesting, like jazzy squirrels, treacherous weather…🐿️ And you said, "It's like England on steroids." I'm wondering what it means.🤔 Which means Scotland is more powerful than England? Scottish accents and dialects are completely new to me. That's good to know!Plus, your tartan dress is so elegant, so Scottish! You look absolutely dazzling in that outfit.🤩 Thank you for your outstanding lecture❗👏☺️
In a nutshell, the Scottish accent is perfect for Spanish natives 😂. A lot of this words it sounds like my best friends would pronunce it first time 😆. Another great approach to Scotland culture is by reading the Peter May books. They are all dark novels and I think there are BBC series of his books. Well, Katharine, I loved your Scottish outfit today 😍🙈. I missed you this week, did you know it 😊? Thanks a bunch for this introduction! You amazing, princess 😚! And... I have a precious weekend, guapa 💞.
Hello Katherine, Scotland is such a lovely country to be. It is one of the great countries in the state of Great Britain apart from England and Ireland. Katherine, I have watched the Scottish music band. They have a large musical instrument like a saxophone and it has a lovely , melodious sound. Scotland has many historical places, including old castles. I love the famous British actress Emma Thompson who acted in Jane Austin's film " Sense and Sensibility" Katherine, I love the Scottish accents you taught to me. Thank you my best English teacher Katherine
Hello @Katherine. Thanks for this video. I have a question... in the first part of the video you said ".... less people..." , shouldn´t it be "fewer people"?
Tapped R is easy for me, in my language we pronounce R strong. But it in some cases it is easy to missunderstand e.g. "Use your head" - "Use your hit".
Great lesson, Katharine! These are essential things to be aware of because just because these countries are united does not mean they are the "same". Each one has its own identities. Do you intend to talk about Ireland and Wales as well? If you do, it will be great! 😊❤

wow, it was amazing Kathi thank you as always.😘
Salutations to the amazingly enthusiastic teacher of English language!! 😊 🎉
😍😍
That was bonny, Kath!!! I love your Scottish accent! I don't know Scottland, but I really want to go there now, and try the soup and of course, real Scotch. Ewan McGregor is my favourite actor, too. I loved him in Big Fish, as I also love Tim Burton. Thank you!!!☺
Thank you very much for a WONDERFUL video! I like to know more and more about the language and culture. But I would like to say that your speaking with this accent was BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hahaha thank you😂
Hi Katharine, greetings from Brazil! 🙂💂💐🦋🌹🐞🌻🐝
Wow!!! That's one of my favourite songs of alllllll time! I didn't know he was Scottish! Thank you so so much for your wonderful comment ☺️
Oh how kind! I love a Peter pan collar blouse 😍😍😍
love Scotland , visited many times and I will come back !!
you have my like and my support
ooo and haggis are delicious, so good memories of Scotland
Looove haggis 😊
🤗🤗
Hey Katharine. Interesting as always! I think you made quite a decent Scottish accent. 🥰 I’ve got friends in Scotland, and although they split up, I still keep in touch with him-the Scottish one. He always tries to throw me off balance when texting by adding Scottish slang and words. Never given him the satisfaction, though. I usually Google it instead. 😉
During my last visit to Edinburgh, I was totally dumbstruck at passport control. The passport officer spoke pretty fast with a very noticeable Scottish accent, and I literally didn’t understand a word. 😅
By the way, in one of your previous videos, you recommended reading The Wind in the Willows.
Yessss it definitely does that 🥰🥰 one of my favourite stories everrrr 🦔🐇🐭
The Scottish accent sounds so lovely.
Katherine, a lot of Scots words are from the Norse/Norwegian Vikings, and a lot of the old words are Pictish as well.
🤗🤗😍😍
Hi gorgeous Katharine, I love your English lessons, thanks a lot and have a nice day! 😃👍
Glad you enjoyed it!! 😀
Thank you soooo much!! Amazing comment Matt 🤗✨👏
Thank you for the amazing video about the Scottish accent....Greetings from West Virginia State.

You look absolutely dazzling in that outfit.🤩
Thank you for your outstanding lecture❗👏☺️
🥰🥰🥰
Second comment ,❤ your teaching very helpful ❤
Oh thank you so much for watching 🙂
Loved this video! Thank you deaR! 😊
So beautiful dress you have today, now I am thinking about turning to the Scotland garments and accent as well☺😄
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 I LOVE tartan !!
Thank you for the suggestion 😊
@@englishwithkatharine You're welcome 🥰 Take care 😇.
Thanks a lot.I've enjoyed this video so much.
So glad to hear that ☺️
Hello Katherine, Scotland is such a lovely country to be.
👌👌☺️😊😊
I Love Scotland, N.I., Wales & England are united in UNITED KINGDOM !
Best Regards from Zaragoza, Aragón, Spain !
God Bless You !

Now I know the reason Pete Townshend sings 'is it in my heed' on is it in my head song from awesome Quadroohenia
Thanks
Hello @Katherine. Thanks for this video. I have a question... in the first part of the video you said ".... less people..." , shouldn´t it be "fewer people"?
Yes but no one says that in natural speech 🤗
@@englishwithkatharine Thanks for answering so promptly! Have a nice day!
Thanks Kat, and today, your outfit looks like a kilt, it has the same patterns. 😮
Yes, going with Scottish theme 💖
I love Scotland, kind people, nice weather, pretty landscape. 🇲🇽♥️
Me too 🥰🥰🥰
I love your country
Tapped R is easy for me, in my language we pronounce R strong. But it in some cases it is easy to missunderstand e.g. "Use your head" - "Use your hit".
I love this kind of video. I would like to watch a video of you about the essex accent.
Very similar to cockney 🥰
Your all places beautiful & one thing I like most that is Snow .
Great lesson, Katharine! These are essential things to be aware of because just because these countries are united does not mean they are the "same". Each one has its own identities. Do you intend to talk about Ireland and Wales as well? If you do, it will be great! 😊❤
Yessss 💕💕 I will!!
@@englishwithkatharine Awesome! I have just finished watching your video about how to be an English rose. I had no idea that they held all these amazing characteristics. =)
Dear K:Do you specify the Glenrothes as locate d in Scotland?
Absolutely no idea I'm afraid! 😁
In 1993 at College: we had English teachers from Scotland called Nick Lakes & from Ireland called O'nonin, he tried hard to teach us some Irish Language.
Thank you 💗💗💗💗💗
Dear Madam Katharine, many thanks for next so great, magnificent lesson.Of course - like always! Btw - I've heard about specific, ancient language in Scotland (absolutely different from English). Is it called -Gaelic? I don't known how often people use this language in real life. Thanks a lot again and have a beautiful time. Take care, please.
Thanks for the class, see ya
Great week for jou Kat .
Ms. Katharine you are a great teacher 😚💗
Thank youuuu
Enjoyed it!❤

A Scottish Doric accent is just fab! Understood none at first😂.
