    One of the best vise restoration videos I have seen on TH-cam I love all the information you included 👍

    Douglas, You made your Grandfather proud. Nice work on your Reed R. I especially like the backstory as well as the older Reed literature.

    I have a 214R, stamped on the right side. 355. March 1955. Month n year my brother was born. He said great, you going to give it to me as a birthday present? Ahhhh, nope! 😁😁

    Love the history you shared. I’m currently refinishing one I got from my grandfather (204R) that seemed to originally be a light blue.

    You did a great job on this vise! I restore an occasional vise as well and I enjoy watching others restore theirs. There's no wrong way to restore a vise and you are a natural! Thank you!

      Fantastic to hear! Makes it worth the effort.

    Good heavens, that paint job is a crime. Look at the ‘before’ footage: what a beauty, all the rust is old rust, doesn’t hurt anyone, it just tells the story. My man, what have you done.

    Great video, I’m in the process of restoring one for a friend.. it was in about the same condition as yours but locked up tight with the dynamic jaw…I got it apart now but am struggling to get the set screw for the collar but out.. it’s soaking now… you did a really nice job on yours…

    Reed vises are fantastic!
    I think when they came from the factory originally they had a raw finish with oil
    I don’t think they were painted?

    Is this the same, or similar to the 106R?

    • @douglasmurphy5343
      @douglasmurphy5343  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very similar. The 106R is a fixed base. Some folks call it a “four-bolt pattern.”

    Thank you for the video. You did a great service to this old tool. So we know what a 106, a 206 and a 406 vise is. What was the 306?

    • @douglasmurphy5343
      @douglasmurphy5343  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve wondered the same thing. None of the catalogs I’ve seen have a 300 series. However, there is one here. If anyone else has evidence, I’d love to see it.

      The 300 series was a stationary base with a swivel static jaw like the 406.

    Hi just saw your video because I was researching my 204R vise. Mine is missing both set screws. Could you tell me the thread count on yours? Much appreciated and thanks for your helpful video.

    That vise has a very faint date stamp on the side. You might see larger numbers that’s to keep all the parts together.

    • @douglasmurphy5343
      @douglasmurphy5343  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, they are fairly faint, but they are identical to the date markings on my 105R and 204 1/2R. Check out the examples here. www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/reed-r-series-post-your-reed-date-stamps.400156/

    This vise should not be painted until you find the original when it looked like brand new!!! Keep researching it's only logical thing to do!!
