I like big vises and I cannot lie. Always like your tool rehab videos, especially vises, and it has been too long. My favorite vise is a 504 1/2 Columbian I found half buried in mud next to a scrap pile on the farm. After watching one of your other vise restore videos it was pretty easy to tear it down, clean it up, and make it a functioning tool again.
Awesome vise, Will! I use a Prentiss 23 daily, it is my main vise, I've got another one that's going on a stand in my new shop someday, for now it's gathering dust. In my opinion the quick change swivel feature is one of the best designs made. Such a handy vise and perfect size for every day use. Great find!
If you want to fix the swivel pin hole I used a morse reamer set to reshaped the whole then cut down a cheap lathe dead center for a new pin. Just clamp the vise shut so the jaws are aligned and start cutting with the reamers. Usually the sets have a roughing and a finishing reamer and are really cheap on ebay. I did this for a swivel jaw vise on my welding table that was missing the pin and it worked out perfectly!
Those jaw covers look really nice!!!! I might have to use that design on one of my vices 😊 I know its a major pain in the bum, but it might be good to try to fix the crack in the tail of the vice before it gets a worse and gives you some serious problems. At the very least, you could pop a hole in the end of the crack to try to stop in getting worse 🤔 Looking farward to the next video to see what your plan for the stand is 😊👍👍👍👍
I just found your channel from your Fireball Tools collab. Enjoying it very much!! I am certainly a newb, but it's alarming when you're holding the chuck here; @11:45 and other times... What is the reason?
You could change the oval handle on the swivel base release for a lever that lifts up the pin when you press down, it would be much easier to lift with a bit of leverage… 😊
Hey I recently saw a welder on TH-cam recommend these silicon carbide stripping discs, to use instead of wire wheels in a lot of applications, I tried them and they're incredible I think you would really like them. They take all the paint rust and grime off, without really hurting the metal underneath, By far the cheapest place I found them is Amazon.
Definitely worth buying a test for your health, it's hard to know for sure considering it's not the original paint. Don't be silly, wear a respirator or something. A hell of a lot cheaper than lung cancer.
Hey Will, you could have made the spacer in the lathe completely. Instead of cutting a piece off on the saw. Use the bar as the "fixture" do any drilling, turning and boring you need to and then just part off your finished part. Saves the saw time and the time on the mill. Thanks for the video!
I noticed that Rockwell drill press in the background. I have the same one. It’s not conducive to metal work because the low speed RPM is still high. Any thoughts of somehow slowing it down?
This is just my opinion, but wouldn't you get a more frictionless swiveling by using an oil stone instead of a file? The sharpie trick was a good idea though.
Was speaking to Ronnie the barber in Big Sky and she had difficulty connecting Will her mate to Will the You Tube star I agree I see you are one of my circle mates along with Kurtis at CEE and Ricky with his /Lambos and Audis
You could take it to a machine shop that does engines and have them bake and blast it and it prob wouldnt cost you 50 bucks and it would look better than a new casting
I feel like this workshop project should have been a perfect excuse to buy a sandblaster. But oh well, we all know that Will likes to do things the hard way.
I like big vices and I cannot lie, You other smiths can't deny, That when a clamp locks down with a cast-iron frame, And jaws so tight it’s insane, you get STUCK. Wanna grind that block, ‘cause it’s set up strong and STOCKED. Deep in the shop it's shinin’. I’m hooked, and I can’t stop alignin’. Oh baby, wanna file that bevel, And sharpen like the devil. My anvil tried to warn me, But this billet I got is so thorny.
Meh, i tried better help twice. I couldn't do it. Mostly due to not knowing what to say or giving a shit if someone is there to listen as well as I don't feel fucked enough for it and don't have time for it.
A real therapist would help you elaborate on your concerns. A real therapist would give a shit because that's how their profession works and you're paying them. As far as time, you probably spend more than 45 min a week just staring into space thinking about nothing - you've got time for therapy. Physically goto someone local with good reviews or referral.
@iblong9505 yeah. About that, you don't know the life of a railroader who also has a family. We don't have set schedules or set days off, so it's not like I can schedule time to speak or see a therapist, but honestly, it's just not for me. My wife thinks I need it, I don't. I dont feel like I have issues that aren't more than just normal life problems. I appreciate your words. I'm just tired of seeing better help ads
@@tankerboysabot No offense intended. But finding time for your health is as important as anything else. You don't need to be clinically depressed or manic to benefit from therapy. Don't ignore your wife. Give it a wholehearted try. You might be surprised how well it works with the right therapist. Good luck!

Yikes. I read that whole post man. Surely there exist better sponsors.

If your sponsor needs a reddit post to assure you that it's not a bad sponsorship... maybe that's a bit of a red flag.

Will you always do my favorite functional vice restorations, I like that you're not going too far witht this one and I can't wait for part 2!
Thanks!

That thing is a BEAST! Makes my 40lb one look like a tiny jeweler's vise! Nice work, and loved the jaws you added to it.
The forged jaw covers out of angle iron is so damn cool looking!
if he made keychain anvils and vices, even airhammers, like $99 collector pieces, I'd buy! great style on those jaw covers

Finally another restoration video 🎉
Once you load the vice on the truck, spray with some carb cleaner and it will soak while you drive to the car wash. Love the channel.
Love your content. On the subject of sponsors. I'm thinking whatever you use to clean those mitts...

Where did you find and purchase a base for that vise???
Glad to see that there are still snacks in the Bridgeport.

That nest was a mud dobbers nest. It can be smashed into powder to get rid of diaper rash when appplied like talcom powder.
I have a 6”jaw vise and I much prefer using heavy brass as the jaw cover. Brass will take the damaged/disfigurement before the work pieces does.
Great video Will!
You need an Emert Universal Benchvise. Just watched a video on them and thought they were really interesting
Hi ! does this scraper you use has a carbide tip ?
Man, I've gotta know where you got that carbide scraper!
That is one badass vise 😎
love my 7 inch 1908 reed.
2:38 best quote
that vice would have loved a bath of evaporust. great job!
Did you know you can bronze "weld" with your TIG set too? Might have been the very thing for that cast pin.
very nice. I redid a 149lb Charles Parker 5X a few months ago.
Looking good!
7:06 how old is that vise? Is there any risk of this being paris green or otherwise arsenic based?
Definitely a concern for 100 year old forging tools. Asbestos in caked on dust should also be a consideration.
Definitely worth buying a test for your health, it's hard to know for sure considering it's not the original paint.
Don't be silly, wear a respirator or something. A hell of a lot cheaper than lung cancer.
Or lead based paint.
I feel like some dry ice blasting would have done the trick vs power washing, it still looks good none the less
When I looked last, dry ice blasting was expensive.
Great job, i had thought that you would have brazed up the crack in the back end of the movable jaw slide.
What's with the ghost audio at 4:21?
Will in the glasses always reminds me of Doc Oc...

You think he doesn’t know that already?
My guess is, the bar doesn´t fit through his lathe spindle bore.
@@smacksteel708 Well captain obvious, he clearly didn't,
@@quelixfenzer5108yeah, you’re probably right. I still would have cut off a 6inch piece and then do the rest in one setup. Good thinking.

Pretty awkward timing for such an obvious audio edit to pop up. Besides, will doesn't go to BH, he goes to church.

Spraying with gunk engine degreaser before the car wash prolly woulda helped a lil
