      Oakland has had almost no growth since 1950 and its a much less wealthy city now than it used to be so is no way they get an expansion team, their only hope would be someone to buy an existing team and want to move in there.

    Nashville resident here. I think it would be hard to get an MLB stadium built here unless it’s all private money. The city and state just approved a ton of money to build a new stadium for the Titans with a lot of disapproval from the citizens.

      The owners group of Nashville has the money but Nashville is likely to give the team a huge package of tax breaks just to get the team and stadium, it would be huge for the city and local businesses, they will make it happen. The state will likely also chip in some to get a MLB team in state.

      It seems to me that your market is already pretty saturated from a pro sports perspective. Only one MLB city, Milwaukee, is smaller than your own, and barely at that.
      Relocating the Predators might open up the possibility for a baseball team to enter the market.

    The only reason Kansas City got an expansion team was that Missouri Sen. Stuart Symington threatened not only to strip MLB of its anti-trust exemption, but to spearhead lawsuits against MLB once that was done. Symington was his era's equivalent of Mitch McConnell in terms of the authority he wielded behind the scenes, and MLB took him seriously as a heart attack - MLB announced that Kansas City would get an expansion team starting in 1971, whereupon Symington said, "Uh... faster," whereupon the timetable got moved up two years. There is no such will, political or economic, behind an expansion franchise today.

    There’s no way MLB comes back to Oakland. No way at all. IF MLB expansion brings a team to the Bay Area, it will be in San Jose or over in Santa Clara. The image of Oakland is so tarnished…and let’s admit it, the city doesn’t have the cachet as other places…that MLB doesn’t want to deal with this place again.

  • @dcfog81
    @dcfog81 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    You mentioned the 1950's and 60's as being a different time. If the A's were to leave the Bay Area, they will have spent the most number of seasons in a market only to leave except for the Braves, Dodgers, and Giants. Those were 19th century NL franchises that moved when there were no teams from coast to coast. The A's have been in Oakland longer than any other city in their team's history. That’s why I cannot fathom Manfred and MLB just being so nonchalant about the possibility of them moving, to be in one place for that long just for them to pick up and leave, like the last 55 years meant nothing...when there's been progress towards a new venue with almost all legal hurdles clear. I mean, if it was like the Expos and there was nothing even close to a new venue and the owner already just sold to MLB, that's different.

    The Coliseum complex definitely needs some major renovations like tearing down both worn-out venues and replace it with a small venue that could accommodate the minor league soccer teams (Roots and Souls), build low income housing, retail, a healthy grocery store, temporary housing for the homeless people with mental and drug rehabilitation programs being added to help those people that had drug addictions and mental illnesses. What else is better to add those to the complex in the future?

Kind of like the Warriors did in SF. There was just so much money to move to SF that they made it happen without a bunch of BS that the A’s have gone through to get HT. Ok one thing that is important is once the A's and Rays situation is under control then there will be a league expansion of most likely 2 teams. But the thing is more league expansions will follow after that most likely another one or two again most likely two teams (as the 69 expansion was a terrible failure). Now with that in mind where would they go to well the MLB has been thinking of a few places. Nashville, Charlotte, San Antonio (they could do Austin but SA would be more likely), Portland, Vegas(if the A's arent there), Vancouver or Montreal as well as others (such as salt lake throwing their hat in). Now Oakland will probably never get a new team again because of the fact that in the late 60's they had and MLB (A's) NFL (Raiders), NBA (warriors), and NHL (Golden Seals which folded in the late 70's after they left) teams and now they have 1 left and they too are packing their bags, but the other reason why is money SF and other Bay Area cities have more money and people than Oakland.

    Kansas City got the Royals in 1969 as a result of litigation brought against MLB and Charles Finley for him moving the A's to Oakland. Seattle had the Pilots in '69, went bankrupt, and moved to Milwaukee. The Mariners exist because of threatened, or actual, legal action against the American League, in 1977 with Toronto. Oakland doesn't get a chance at an expansion team unless the city files litigation, which would be thrown out.

    @Brodie Brazil Public money to build Stadiums is total foolishness, unless the Teams are going to give the Public a piece of the actions (propositional ownership). For too long, the Team Owners reap the biggest rewards for these moves and the Public bears the biggest risks/outlays. When the Teams sell out for Billions how much do they give back to the communities......usually nothing. Even though I would be against Public money being used to build Stadiums, if it is absolutely necessary, the Public should be given ownership relative to their investment. In Vegas A's want $500 Million from the public for a $1.5 Billion stadium, A's should give Vegas $500 million worth of shares in the organization, done deal. What's the problem with that? This goes for Nashville as well, if there is a team there give the community a piece of the pie.

Cool dude that one. But still - once athletics leave - diehard will stick with the team. Tired fans will jump ship to the giants.

      I can’t think of a reason to go to Oakland besides a baseball game. I went to the Bay Area on my honeymoon in 1999 and we didn’t stay long after the A’s game. I sat for my California boards in Oakland but we rented a car and drove a lot.
      I hope that owners vote to keep the team in Oakland.

      Correct. Before expanding to any city, MLB wants assurance there is or will be a stadium. It seems to me, from afar, that the city of Oakland tried to build a new stadium so I feel bad for fans there. As you also point out, someone has to want to put a team there. Don't forget about the Giants who, once the A's leave, will make it difficult if not impossible to have a second team in the Bay Area. I'm afraid Oakland will not see the return of major league baseball.

    Maybe the Giants can put a AAA team in Oakland after expansion requires a new minor league teams. More likely it would go to San Jose.

    • @ronclark9724
      @ronclark9724 ปีที่แล้ว

      San Jose is a better major league city presently than Oakland. Silicon Valley vs a port. Maybe Oakland will discover minor league stadiums and arenas are much more affordable than major league stadiums and arenas. Amarillo built for AA baseball Hodgetown for $45 million, whereas Cedar Park, a suburb of Austin, built for the AHL and the D-League the HEB Center for $55 million($70 million today considering inflation). Notice 7 thousand seating capacity each instead of up to 30 thousand... And yes minor league teams do play in major league markets for baseball, basketball, and hockey... I have been racking my brains for a baseball major league to minor league example, but fail to come up with any, but there are examples for basketball and hockey. Presently Oakland, San Diego, Anaheim, and St. Louis are the only NFL former major league city that haven't gotten another new team since the AFL-NFL merger. Baltimore, Cleveland, and Houston have lost teams, but have been replaced with new teams, all with new stadiums. St. Louis lost the Cards, got the Rams, and then lost the Rams. Back to baseball, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Washington DC, and Seattle have lost teams but have gotten new teams, again with a new stadium. Of course St. Louis and Philadelphia have lost MLB teams without being replaced since the end of the Second World War, but they are still major league cities. Am I missing something? Please don't mention from city to suburb relocations in the same metro market...

      I don't think you can compare Brooklyn and the NYC area to Oakland. It's apples and oranges. There are no other former major league city that have had a minor league team. The closest I can think of are St.Paul MN and Kansas City who have (had?) independent league teams. Even Montreal, nearly 20 years after the Expos left, don't have a minor league team, and it's unlikely they will any time soon. As said by Brodie, once you've been a major league city, you don't want to become a minor league one.

  • @Chrisb8s

You take away the provenance that makes the As the As that makes Oakland a baseball city at all. Nope, they did have a chance to make it work. The question I have is this. Is Las Vegas worthy of a baseball team ? I personally think that there is so much competition, that they will not do well there

      Your absolutely right. They think the Vegas locals will support this dumpster fire. Another thing is the Raiders only have minimum 8 games a year. Preseason & playoffs maybe add 2 more. That’s sustainable compared to 81 home games in the middle of the strip corridor. And the locals don’t support bad teams in Vegas. Your talking traffic, high sales tickets, etc. nobody wants to support this dumpster fire of a team.
