I was a Police officer working out of Baker Street London.
It has/ had a firing range below as used by espionage officers in WW2.
Baker Street was also where the letter box where Danger mouse lived and worked. A British kids cartoon character.
    Brilliant song.

    Gerry Rafferty is the singer.
Baker Street is such a classic, and I never get tired of listening to it.
Most people seem to think that Gerry was a one hit wonder....but nothing could be further from the truth.
He had grat hits with "Stuck in the middle with you", "Right down the line"....but there was one song that had it all, and will have your foot tapping in overdrive, called "Get it right next time"....totally brilliant!

Gerry Rafferty was a musical genius up there with the best, he had a big hit with Stealers Wheel, (Stuck In The Middle With You) in '72 before his solo success, he has a big catalogue of music, two of his other big hits where, Get It Right Next Time and Night Owl, he unfortunately passed away in 2011 🇬🇧

What a classic. Brought back so many memories. Gerry was from nr Glasgow, my home town, and was in The Humblebums with Billy Connolly in the early seventies. I remember seeing them at Glasgow University Men's Union one lunchtime - yes, there were separate men's and women's unions then. They both went their separate ways, and both were successful. Baker Street is in central London. Big Tube station and fictional home of Sherlock Holmes. I believe Gerry was staying there for a while - "trying to give up the booze and the one night stands". Died too early. RIP Gerry.

Gerry Rafferty had a previous band called "Stealer's Wheel" who had a HUGE hit called "Stuck In The Middle With You"
On the breakup of the band there arose a whole mess of legal problems and complicated legal battles about royalties etc. . the usual band arguments.
Gerry had to routinely go from his home in Glasgow, Scotland to Baker Street in London to see his lawyers and strategise etc. He would stay in a friend's apartment nearby when he was in London for these visits, and the song is loosely based on conversations he had with his friend while staying in his apartment.
The stress. . The drinking. . The worry. . etc. THAT'S what the song is about.

Hi, in my humble opinion, there are four great songs with saxophones in Baker Street, Careless Whisper, Smooth Operator by Sade, and Will You by Hazel O'connor. I really think you would love the last song. It's still to this day one of the best saxophone songs.

I was in my early twenties when I moved to London .
I went out with a guy who was a Session Musician .
He lived with 3 other guys in a flat on Baker Street . The flat was one front door over the top of a dry cleaners .
Next to an Escort Agency .
It was all set out as a practice studio .
I learned to play drums and they could all many instrument we played all the 80s hits .
Then would go out at 4 am for snacks at the alnight deli .
Meet up with some Musical theatre people and play till the next day .
Baker Street memory lane for me .
    Thanks Mike annd Jess .

As many others have mentioned, Gerry was in a folk band with Billy Connolly.
Also, the guy who played the incredible guitar solo was Hugh Burns, who went on to play for George Michael, bith in Wham! and also on George's solo work.

Rafferty was a genius songwriter. I was in a pub in Cornwall in 1978 having a meal and drink when it was released. During the two hours we were there this was virtually the only thing played on the jukebox. Halcyon days.

Just tell you s story about this song . When it came out in early 1978 my father had just passed away. When I was going to the funeral I popped into my local for a bit of dutch courage and this song was on the juke box. For years afterwards I got upset when I heard this song, even though I got to like the song, and several other Gerry Rafferty songs.

Thank you for playing one of my all time favourites along with another all time favourites that Gerry had a hit with stuck in the middle with you, a hit with a group called Steelers Wheel, but Gerry first achieved fame in his native Scotland in a folk group he started with the famous comedian Billy Connolly, the group was called the Stumblebums and as they did their shows, they discovered that Billy's humorous stories between the songs suited Billy more than his music and singing. Eventually they broke up and Billy's comedy career took off and Gerry carried on with his love of music with at least two of my most favourite music hits. Hope his gives you some background to the careers of two famous sons.

One of the best tracks ever written. This talented man was from my home town, my mum knew him when she was young. I was friends with his nephew in school. A brilliant talent and gone far too soon. The stuff we missed! This guy was important and brilliant. And this sax has to be in the top three of all time (for me it's top) Great reaction!! :D cheers enjoyed that a lot.

I am 60 years old and I remember this fantastic song which was around the late 1970's early 1980's. Baker Street is very famous around the world as it's the home street of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Doctor John Watson of 221B Baker Street here in London my home city. Ive been to Baker Street many times and yes 221B Baker Street actually exists but it once belonged to a Bank and it's offices, but it now belongs to another business. The song Baker Street is one of my favourite songs of all time. 💂‍♂️🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇮🇪

Gerry was born and brought up in Paisley, my town. Grew up in the Ferguslie Park scheme and even named an album after it. Fabulous album. The Humblebums were primarily Gerry, Billy Connolly and Joe Egan…. only Billy left now 😢 R.I.P. Gerry and Joe 😢😢 Your music lives on…
