2024 Mazda CX-70 Review | The Biggest 2-Row In The West?

- When Mazda introduced the CX-70, the similarities to the CX-90 were immediately clear. Now that we've had a chance to look closer, those similarities are that much more obvious but is that really a bad thing? The size is the same and for a 2 row model that means a lot of dedicated rear storage space with more organized storage available beneath the load floor. The engine options are the same and in the PHEV and Turbo S variants we drove they are both welcome offerings to move you down the road and onto your adventure/activity. The interior has some slight variation to it's 3 row sibling but there's a slightly different aesthetic applied to the CX-70 that will attract folks wanting a sportier feel. If you're shopping for a 2 row SUV and you don't mined one that's on the large end of the spectrum we hope this video will help guide your decision making!

Pls save a marriage. Always include details on front PASSENGER seat power features. Years ago, I overlooked that on a 2019 and still paying for that in 2024.
We'll do what we can, thanks for sharing. -Travis
Why oh why didn't Mazda give us the CX-60? I know how to fold down the third row of a CX-90 and transform it into a CX-70.
The probably will
@Rockybalboa541 Sadly it's just for other markets with tighter streets and smaller vehicles overall
To be frank, if they gave us the CX60 as a CX70, many of us would've complained that it is not significantly larger than a CX5 & CX50. So I understand why Mazda gave us this instead. They chose to err on the side of "larger" because America. They are a small company that makes really good, premium feeling cars but they also have to reasonably save costs when they can while expanding their line-up. I also would rather buy a CX90, unless I really didn't need a 3 row and the CX70 was heavily discounted.
Whether they brought the 60 or the 70, there would be model overlap and if I had to venture a guess I would assume it's because Americans tend to like bigger over smaller. -Travis
@@carbzav8017 I think the assumption was a wider and longer CX-60 with a more refined rear designed rather than that bubbly rear so it would have been bigger with the new powertrain but that just didn't happen and now Americans only have one size choice for that powertrain whereas Europe gets two. Mazda was right in going bigger, but they didn't actually make a new car...it's a new name because of SEO
Stop calling it big brother is the same car, I think mazda make a big mistake with this car, just bring the cx60 mazda just trying to deceive us.
Gentlemen, nice review. Very comprehensive. And gorgeous Palm Springs 🌴 scenery
I liked the Autopian headline: "The CX-70 makes a great case for buying the CX-90"
I’ll take a 2-row for the storage over the CX-90.
Nice job guys, thanks! 🙏
Amazing review bro & I would love to buy this.
My problem with this vehicle is not even the lazy effort by Mazda to make two cars that look identical. My problem is the pricing, why would I skip on an MDX with a V6, 10 speed and SHAWD for this with the same price? A more reliable and easier to repair vehicle. I bought a cx9 signature 2021 model and loved it, this time I’m going a different route.
Ty for the video. Just bought the inline 6 S Plus. Luv the tan interior. The charging pad is a bit tricky, but I did find placing it to the right of the pad, it charges without issues.
CX-60 makes more sense for this segment, hope Mazda will listen to its fans.
I continually feel bad for car reviewers who are doing these reviews as if this thing is really a "new model". It isn't. It should have just been a different trim for the CX-90 as a Sport variant or something. There are some reviewers going over the top with their "NEW MODEL!!" nonsense and I'm actually embarrassed for them. Shame on Mazda for what they did here. Just a lazy effort in my eyes.
not sure if its lazy or more work having to market an entire new vehicle so that makes its more difficult as well
@@gullomic Not hard to market a car when all you have to do is change the 9 to a 7 in the model name and take new pictures. So, yeah, it's lazy.
So the only difference between the 70 and the 90 is that the 70 doesnt have the 3rd row? While it feels weird, I think I like that better than the trend of adding "L" or "Grand" for the one with more seats, or "Sport" for the one with fewer seats. This is going to be much easier to google and actually get the car you're looking for.
Next Mazda release for US market is cx60, same size as cx90 but this time without 2nd row
Mazda should bring a midsize truck with the I6. They should provide a plug-in model too. It would sell well. That I6 would fit perfectly in a midsize truck.
That would be awesome to see and I would likely be one of the first in line but I wouldn't put my money on it, not by a long shot. -Travis
mazda killing it with looks but not sure about quality. My brand new cx9 gt gave me a few issues.
Hopefully those issue are covered and fixed under warranty! -Travis
☕☕ Happy Tuesday
Good job nice review. Yes the bottom line is why not just get a CX-90 and leave the seats folded except for the rare time you may need them? That's the logical choice. Only real reason to get a CX70 over the 90 is that you just happen to like the slightly different trim looks of one over the other. If they had the exact same trim, seat, and look options for both......it would be a no brainer. Get the CX90
Some people simply will not want a third row of seats but it remains to be seen how many. -Travis
I like they retained the sliding and reclining seats. Sometimes you need to prioritize passenger or cargo space just a bit, and the sliding could help with that. Also like the size as Grand Cherokees and the like don't have enough cargo space. Just wish they had offered in a true soft-roader trim like the Pilot TrailSport. Needs a bigger fuel tank too.
A soft roader trim could be possible but I think it makes sense to see how this sells before putting more money into development. -Travis
Wife and I were really excited for a mid-segment Japanese premium PHEV to finally give us the "Venza PHEV" we always wanted, but this... this isn't it. There's no way we're toting around a gigantic wart of a vehicle that's nearly 10 inches longer than a Subaru Outback, and doesn't even get 2 miles per kWh EV range. Truly abysmal market analysis and product development from Mazda, a surprising blunder for an otherwise amazing brand.
It's a significant step larger than the Venza amongst many others. -Travis
Are we really surprised though? It's Mazda - same company that gave us a 100 mile MX30 LOL
Why not phase out CX 5 and bring cx 60?
Said no Mazda bean counter
22:00 i had this exact question
between the 70 and the 90, they're practically the same price here in Canada...
How was the clearance for either of you under the open hatch? Did the tops of your heads brush up against the fully open hatch, or did it lift high enough to not bump your heads?
If I recall, things were a little bit tight under the hatch. Nick and I are both about 6' tall. -Travis
Thank you for a nice 2 row~ not everyone has 6 screaming children!
Ya, some have a dozen children and need a bus, a real bus.
I’d easily choose the Grand Cherokee 4xe over this.
It’s not a large midsize suv, it’s a large suv with 2 rows. Personally I don’t think that what Americans are looking for but hey, it’s Mazda’s car. I think we were looking for alternatives to the Jeep GC and the Honda Passport. I mean, there are not that many midsize 2 row suvs to choose from…and now that is still the case. 🤷♂️ It WAS on my list.
Travis and Nick, If this is a two row CX-90, does that make it a wagon? 🤔 Speaking of wagons, just like the new Crown Signia, this CX-70 is S-C-R-E-A-M-I-N-G out for a 40/20/40 second row for easy transport of skis and other long items. Why is that key feature disappearing from so many modern cars in this premium price range? 🤨 I will credit Mazda for including a sliding second row with adjustable seating angle. Once again, both those core features are inexplicably absent in the otherwise impressive Signia. 🙄
Mazda is really trying to be Premium-like while still being adorable, there are quite a few premium features missing but it helps keep the price down. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide "adorable" Great typo! Those adorable Mazdas.
You forgot the most important part, availability of a spare tire?! If it has none, I'm not sure I would be brave to take it anywhere off-road, with those rubber band 21 inch tires. Just asking for a terrible day waiting for a tow truck.
2026 mazda cx-60 is coming soon! (Its a cx70 with just the front seats and huge cargo area). Its for a distinctly different customer with no family or friends but lots of baggage.
Switch to the torque converter transmission for smooth low speed operation.
guess the expedition xl stx doesn’t exist
An actual shift lever but not a normal layout? Why do car makers hate an easy to use shifter that is intuitive and can be used without looking or thinking? Otherwise it looks like a nice station wagon!
The lever would be easy enough to get used to but until one does it'll be a little frustrating. -Travis
I really prefer the short throws of this shifter once you get used to it. Whenever I get into my wife or my son’s vehicle it seems like the throws are huge in comparison.
@@sheldonduffy9442 Short throws are fine, my pickup has a dial which is easy. I think it just should be simple and not weird. I was in a car the other day with a shift lever but had to push a button to put it in park. Like was this necessary?
I think this is a huge hit in spite of everyone wishing the cx70 was shorter
I'm very curious to see what happens with sales numbers. -Travis
I’m in that crowd for sure, but it’s gonna be selling fine for sure. I personally think it looks better than the CX-90 especially all blacked out, but I do like myself a 3rd row. And I don’t know if I’ll ever find the time to swap the bumpers out, or if it’s even worth it.
How is it in the city and over potholes?
It can be rough over potholes but that's the price you pay for a more planted feel without spending an arm and a leg. -Travis
@AAutoBuyersGuide the larger wheels also contribute to the poor ride, 19" would be much more comfortable and more economical to replace.
Too long to comfortably fit inside garage and be able to open the tailgate without having the garage door open. If it were closer to 190" I would have bought one yesterday :(
Tailgate height can be adjusted / preprogrammed
At this price point I suspect most folks shopping for a new car won't be garage limited. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Price of cars has little to do with the depth of residential garages. In fact, just from personal experience I'd say that the depth of garages has shrunk over the decades to the point that new construction McMansions with 3 and 4 car garages are barely deep enough to fit a Tesla Model3 let alone the every growing CUVs of today.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I disagree. Average garage depth are between 20 and 22ft. Mine is 22ft. That gives me only 2.5 feet (shoulder width basically) or less front to back IF you center the car perfectly. Not a lot of room to walk around and even trickier if you actually plan to move stuff from the back of the car out to the house. I have rented a Pacifica (4" longer) and I fit it into the garage but can not open tailgate when car is inside and have to walk sideways in front/back to get around. I haven't been in a +$1M house to look at their garage but all the +$500k homes here are about the same in Atlanta. :-/
As for the tailgate it's not the height, it's the swingout. I have a Q8 eTron and it fits good but not much wiggle room to park (I can be off about 6" and it's ok). But the Cx70 being 8" longer the is no margin and less room to walk around it.
What is difference in length? That may be the difference for me
No real difference in length. -Travis
It's time to stop complaining about car prices.
Everything is significantly higher these days, and it's not going to get any better.
I've already accepted that I will probably never be able to afford another pickup truck.
The CX-70 has a much sportier exterior. The front end is way more attractive than the CX-90. I’m not thrilled about having to choose between style and function.
You can tell the difference at a glance? -Travis
Zaddy Nick 🥵
This is the perfect new car for the current upper Americans. Space invading and deceiving.
$57,000 Mazda. Sheesh. A few days after Hurricane Katrina, I bought a base Mazda 3 for 16,004 dollars.
$16,004 Mazda. Sheesh. Only 20 years before Katrina, someone (many people) bought a new Mazda RX-7 for 2,640 dollars.
Even though a new Mazda3 has an MSRP almost $10,000 more than that, a lot of that increase has to do with where the car is positioned in the segment. It's moved list a bargain offering and much close to a premium one. -Travis
But look at what you get. You get a proper luxury car
This is the top of the line two row entry level luxury vehicle…the vehicle you should be comparing it to is a CX-9, and there HAS been a significant increase in pricing vs a CX-9 but there has been a significant increase in the cost of ALL vehicles.
Nick and Travis related ?
Not that we know of! -Travis
Toyota Rav4 Prime is a better plug in hybrid
Just bring cx60 from Europe. This cx70 is absolute mazda’s disgrace. Lazy mazda solution for North America market.
If this was a CX60 it would be perfect. This CX70 is pointless as it’s just a CX90 that looks worse
Too big.
It's certainly not small. -Travis
Cheaper than BMW
Most 2 row SUV buyers don't want a boat this Long and big. wanted the cx60 ish size. Mazda dropped the ball on this Lazy release. How do you delete the 3rd row but leave the cupholders? 👎👎👎
People whinging, whining and moaning not to get the euro spec cx 60 smaller size is getting old.
Video is good, car is not .. That negative space between screen and buttons is too much bothering and not at all aesthetically pleasing
Auto buyers guide has had 4 reviewers (3 now), all of which have been males. Any chance of getting some female input soon? I love auto buyers guide but would love some diversity and varying experience/ opinions.
A concerted effort has been and continues to be made. -Travis
Don't forget the this used to just be Alex Dykes' side hustle. That Brian guy was around for a couple of months but is now at KBB. There aren't a lot of women doing car reviews- those that are, are tied to the big names and probably would wan't to come down to a tier 2 site like AoA. That said, if Alex could talk Emme Hall into coming on board she'd bring not only a wealth of experience in auto reviews, but a completely different background seeing as she's an off road racing enthusiast.
I would sell a kidney to get Emme on board, she's a very good friend but it's not her jam at the moment. -Alex
Are you interested? In all seriousness, we hunted high and low and couldn't find anyone interested.
Complete attempt to copy savagegeese with two reviewers discussing the product…Psst, it didnt work yo…
Oh wow, two car reviewers, only savagegeese has that lol
I'm not sure they have the exclusive rights to that concept. -Travis
Throttle House. Straight Pipes. Motormouth. Any of those ring a bell?
why would anyone get this instead of th 90 makes no sense
