Also let's not forget the Export Appliance feature, which allows you to package up the VM and all its necessary files into one portable file. You'd primarily want to use this for backup purposes when maybe getting a new disk drive rather than moving a VM in use on your current storage configuration.
Dude thank you. I asked a guy from IT at work and he said it was not possible, but you have given me hope. Definitely will subscribe and view your other content. Cheers!

How do I power off my vm without it returning to installation mode when I restart? I tried removing the iso bit usually get a "no bootable media error".
Please help! it wont move when i click move no matter what i do. looks like the USB i have is FAT so it wont accept more than 4GB 1 file? what's the solution then? Thank you

Very helpful video! I was thinking to install Ubuntu Linux but on a flash drive for the storage use, do u think it will work good enough running straight from a flash drive and lets say 2gb of RAM?
Hi thanks I wanted to actually upgrade my windows from 8.1 to 10 and I wanted to keep all of my files and settings, therefore I used your tutorial, and thanks for that, but now the situation is that after the windows upgrade I want to put everything back in VM in a new window, with the same VM kali settings, kindly tell me how to do it. Your videos are so helpful!! Any insight/ videos on how to increase the storage on the VM now that it's on an external HD with much more storage? Thanks again!
Unfortunately you can only change the vm storage during setup. There are some ways where you can go into some source files and change it but it’s complicated.
Well, I did attempt to make a video about that a few months ago. However, it is a little complicated. I ended up messing up my old Mac to point where I had to install Lion again. There are some good tutorials on TH-cam though. Just have to be careful. I might attempt it again in the future.
Hi, thanks for the very helpful video, I got a question though because I want to completely move my virtual machines to a new computer and work from there, following your instructions it looks like I can just save it to the files to a flash drive and then save it to the new computer's hard drive and use the virtual box 's new machine set up that you did and select the file location. my question is will this virtual machine created on the new computer using the existing .vdi file we saved from the flash drive, will this machine on the new computer be in the same state as it would've been on the old computer? what I mean is like will it keep the settings and any updates I made previously on the VM itself? hopefully what I'm saying makes sense and if you can help answer that, thankyou.
Yes it should. Think of the vdi as a hard drive. Now the other file is what is used for Virtualbox’s vm settings. It’s kinda of hard to explain. You might need to move both of them to make everything work on a completely different computer.
@@BenjaminsTech okay just to be safe I will just copy those other two files and replace it with the automatically generated one on the new machine? I also see there is a Clone option as well would that work better?

@@BenjaminsTech The issue was that, when i had moved the VM's to the external hard drive (1 TB) and i closed down the virtual box manager and reopened it said something along that files were missing and stuff. for one it can be useful for playing with and getting experience with a different operating system (e.g. Ubuntu) without needing another computer. I have used it to do application development on Linux where I normally develop under windows. It is also possible to have multiple virtual boxes and network them together. Also if you need to do development on older versions of operating systems it is possible to do that without needing a dedicated machine. And you can archive/back up copies of that system once you have it set up for future use.
Very helpful! But I was wondering why the .vdi file in my Ubuntu VM that I just set up yesterday has already 14G in it? I haven't download any software yet.
Ubuntu requires 25gb of hard drive space. So that 14gb is all of system files Ubuntu needed for the install. A Windows 10 install could be larger than that.

You need only .vdi file to export?
After I move the vm to my hard drive, can I remove the hard drive and plug it back in when I want to use the vm?
Yes. Just don’t try to open the vm without the hard drive plugged in.

I am not sure about a flash drive, i have not tried that. It would be best to install on an SSD
hello thanks for instruction. after doing this also how to move the windows documents as well into the external drive.
I’m not sure what your question is. The vm is contained in the file we moved.
I moved it to my 1tb ssd but the virtual machine is not booting it stays on the windows loading page. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
You´re the best!. That method could it work on 2018 air model?
Yes!

I think that should work. If not Mac extended journal or Apple system.

Great vid Ben, what is the impact on speed of the VM's?
Doesn’t slow it down much. Especially if you are using an ssd.
Will this damaged the data in our ext HDD? I am kinda scared about it
No. Just think of this as another file.
Will It use any of my normal storage? (Srry bad english)
If you move it it won’t.
Could you please do a tutorial on how to use boot camp for older MacOs systems that no longer officially supports it.

That’s what I did in the video.
Recommend that you make a test VM before trying this.

Would new programs you installed on your VM via moving it to a external drive save the programs you just installed?
In other words, would you have to copy a new .vdi image everytime you install something new?
No
what about VMWARE? thank you !
