Ugh I want one I need to replace my 2019 acura but I'd take a older ridgeline. I'm concerned about getting a higher mileage car coming from a brand new car.
The Honda 3.5L engine is a good engine just make sure service the timing belt every 100k miles or 6 years. Honda fixed the transmission problem in after 2012.
Check your transmission fluid frequently and make sure it is at the right level and the color is not dark brown or light pink like strawberry milkshake. If you see like pink color, it could be caused by leaky transmission cooler (transmission cooler is inside the radiator). Try to change transmission oil every 30,000 miles.
@@golfish8589 Ridgelines never had Trans issues from the get go on the first model year they came with the strengthened 4 shaft automatic transmission. Odysseys were the offender with the 3 shaft trans (4-5speed)that ran from 1999-2007?2008? Still i would switch out the dw1 honda fluid at least every 30-50k miles.
Hey Scotty, just a side note, as a Ridgeline owner for 13 years, the all wheel drive system works independent at slow speed, but on the highway, running highway speed, if you are on ice or wet pavement, and start to lose traction, the rear wheel drive will kick in just long enough to straighten you back up! Has happened to me several times on ice, barely noticeable. And the ride is great, thanks to the all wheel independent suspension! By the way, this is a front wheel drive pickup, full time. So your ability to drive on ice is great.
My '03 Pilot has ~296K miles on it. I've probably put in just around ~3k in its lifetime to fix it, simply because it hasn't had many issues until a few years ago. Drives really well and behaves nicely at the moment.
The best features of this truck besides the reliability is the storage, which is the flip down or side opening tail gate and the under the bed trunk. Just awesome.
My 2017 ridgeline 131k miles on it, about time to replace the dampers still drives like a dream! 1 thing though, Honda needs to get their act together when it comes to doors/windows seals. It can go from quite and nice to " is there a window open?" Literally over night!
Thats crazy i had a 2003 accord and oneday all of a sudden air started coming in when i would be on the freeway and it would be freezing cold. I never understood why
I have a 2007 Ridgeline. The 06-2104 Ridgeline is AWD all the time. It has 60% of power on the front wheels and 40% on the rear. The VTM-4 Lock mode can be activated only at speeds less than 18 mph in 1st, 2nd, or Reverse Gear positions which allows more torque to be applied to the rear wheel for when you are stuck or almost stuck.
My ridge is making a popping and then squeaking sound on the driver side rear. I changed the front bearing and axle because the mechanic told me it was that and it’s still doing it. Since you built them, do you know what it could be?
Love my Ridgeline. Brought my first RXL in 2007 and never had any problems with it. Sold it in 2018 and I upgraded to a 2019 RXL. My sister looking for a used one and told her to watch your video before buying used Ridgeline or any other truck. Thanks Scotty! P.S. my son turned me on to your website. keeping it all in the family :)
I switched to Mobile-1 synthetic in my wife's '06 Highlander V6 also at about 100K, and it developed a small rear main seal leak after a couple of oil changes. The leak seems to have stopped after switching to Valvoline High-Mileage non-synthetic oil and adding ATP-205
Don't go cheap on the oil filter. Use FRAM synthetic at $10. & I change mine, every 6 thousand miles. With a little Marvel Mystery oil, between oil changes. ( well over 300 thousand miles) HA.HA.HA
I did the same with my 2006 new/used 115K 4.0 Tacoma. It's been over a year and no problems. I've been using Walmart synthetic for 12 years in all my vehicles with a premium filter. Great value, the truck and the oil.
I own a 2020 Ridgeline RTL-E and love it. Ridgelines are great if you want the convenience of a truck but also the nice ride and comfort of an upscale SUV. If you go off road or need to haul heavy things then get a full size pickup with a big V8.
@@robertberin4872 I'm not sure about the older model but the current ground clearance is 7.9 inches. Like I said, if you want to do some serious off roading, the Ridgeline isn't really a good fit for that.
I have used full synthetic in all my vehicles since they were new. At least now I feel good about having high mileage and just keeping up with synthetic not having to deal with switching now. Love the videos keep them coming...
As a ex car salesman I sold these and they have great engines but what's the point when it overheats, head gaskets problems, and has a lot of electrical problems. Just buy a Toyota Tacoma base model.
@junkmail So can you explain all the Honda Odysseys, Honda Accords and Pilots we bought at auction that had horrible electrical problems? With 20 to 50k miles. Honda makes great motors but I wouldn't trust them with my calculator when it comes to electrical or computer
@junkmail I have been driving a 2008 ridgeline for about 6 months. 140,000 miles runs great. Picked it up at an auction for totaled cars. It was an easy fix. Since I don't know any history. What should I do about tranny fluid? 1. leave it alone? 2. Drain and fill 3 times 3 I will not do a mechanical flush. What should I watch out for as far as tranny issues? Or engine. Is there any preventive things I can do to avoid major mechanical issues? Thanks
I agree with the mechanic because I am a mechanic and that salesman has no idea what he’s talking about like you said those ones in the auction were probably flood damage vehicles. As I always say never trust a salesman they only look at the style of the vehicle and the interior the rest of the vehicle have no idea what’s going on
I have a 2011 Ridgeline - loaded and I love it. I can't wait to get a newer used one - newer style, but this truck just keeps carrying me around in style! Guess I will have to wait a while yet.
Scotty, love your show. Driver side side air bags have drastically reduced splenic injuries during T-bone collisions. Of course the must be used with seat belts.
Scotty’s right about synthetic in older cars. Did a stint of synthetic oil in my 2000 Integra for 4 years, and as soon as I switched back to conventional, as specified in owners manual, no more leaks/burning oil.
@@cruisingaltitudepilot It's a 2010 5.3 V8 Silverado with close to 150,000 miles. It does have AFM which I'm not crazy about and I've heard about all the oil consumption and lifter issues with these AFM engines. My trucks been very dependable with none of these issues at all. Maybe I've just been lucky so far. Got my fingers crossed because this trucks been paid off for a long time and with the price of new ones I plan on keeping it for many years.
I've been shopping online for a 1st gen Ridgeline and there's no way you're gonna get a 2013 for $8K unless it's got a shitload of miles on it or has a bunch of problems.
CRAPO2011 you have a point there and seat belts do almost all the work anyways based on my traffic accident investigations back in the late 70s. I wouldn’t worry about them except in a place like Commiefornia or Newyorkistan, Nanny states that do computer DMV link inspections.
I have a 2018 Ridgeline. It’s fantastic. The ride quality advantage compared to all other trucks cannot be overstated. If you need to make fun of it for not being a “real” truck to make yourself feel better for your choices, that’s fine. Looks aside since that’s very subjective, this is all the truck >90% of truck owners need. Most people fall for the marketing of American trucks, and that’s their choice.
I have the first year Ridgeline (2006) AWD. 175K carefree miles. I don't care for the looks of the new ones but they get good reviews. It has been really good at many things. Only two gripes: mileage (like he says, 15-18) and a blind spot due to the body and small rear windows; you have to learn to look twice.
2007 Honda Ridgeline, 118k, all wheel drive great on icy, snow, intermittent dry pavement. Auto senses slipping wheel, flashes warning on dash, dynamic slip control. 4 wheel lock at lower speeds not much different from many 4 wheel drive, which isn’ t usable on older trucks. Remember locking hubs? 5000 towing, could be better, but I have pulled more in an emergency, and the Ridge had no problem holding 70 thru hills. Also, Ridgeline is 3/4 ton (1500 #) not 1/2 ton (1000 lbs). No problem. If one pushes the weight limit, rear squats and wheel camber changes, just like On old VW Beetles. If Honda added a grunt gear, increased towing to 7500, and tough bumpers (not painted plastic) it would be near perfect for anyone other than rock crawlers.
I just bought a used one - great truck....love the versatility. 8K for the one Scotty was looking at must have been in a serious wreck and basically given away once fixed. These hold their value well and 8K for a 2013 (that was 37K new) with just 140K miles would raise a red flag to me.
The only real negative about a Ridgeline is the fact that it is not a true truck with a frame. It is a uni-body vehicle like all Hondas are. That is why it can only tow 5000 pounds. They do look good for the most part. My neighbor has a brand new one, and it is REALLY nice for a light duty truck. Just don't think it will ever compete with an F-150. Good video. I still like my Ford Explorer Sport-Trac though -- a frame....
Hi everybody I have a 2014 Ridgeline [last year in that design]. You are all correct it's not a full size pickup or maybe even a truck [even though my state says it is]. I love watching people with SUV's putting stuff like plywood and mulch in their cars treating them like trucks. I'm older now and a full size pickup isn't for me. To put something in the bed is a hassle , too high. It rides great so a great daily driver. Also I'll never pay 44000 for a new one too many bells and whistles. I'll keep mine till I die.
I have a 08 ridgeline love it 171k everything still works original ac compressor ice cold you said in one of your video's to stay from this honda i think you are wrong on that one i do respect your comments but those ridgelines are runners like the other honda's also you didn't show the 2 way tailgate and the trunk that doubles as a cooler with drain in it
Got rid of my 06 last year. Tranny loop in the radiator cracked and contaminated transmission fluid with coolant. Ruined the transmission. 150000 miles. It was a great vehicle. Put in a 100$ radiator as insurance. I heard they were known for this.
I switched my used 05 Outback XT to full synthetic about 6 years ago. Only issue is that my 15 year old car only gets seen by the mechanic twice a year instead of 4 times. I've done everything you say to avoid... I live in NY with salted roads. I own a turbo engine. It's AWD. I've modified the suspension, brakes, intake, exhaust & computer mapping. I switched to fully synthetic. It's been fairly reliable for about 7 years and has 162k miles on the odometer now. I don't miss the "reliable" Matrix my wife sold because it required too many repairs for a new car.
I have a 2006 with 201,000 . timing belt is a negative for sure, ac still cold and it will haul everything I want; plywood, mulch, etc. no problems other than normal maintenance. original struts, a-arms , ball joints but rust is taking over from being in snow state with lots of salt. It does handle and ride better than any conventional truck.
All I drive is Hondas because if all I have to do is spend 500 bucks every three years on a timing belt and water pump is way better than what I used to do changing motors transfer cases and transmissions and differentials out of the big three corporation vehicles. (yes I own Chevy Dodge and Ford at one time what a bunch of crap they are).
Check under the seats for disconnected seat wiring harnesses for the airbag light. If it is disconnected, jumping one of the wires will turn off the light. There are instructions online on how to clear that light. Many people disconnect the seat harness and start the car and can't get the airbag light off.
Japan has given the world the very best quality for the most reasonable price since the late 60's My wife's 510 Datsun station wagon with a Borg Warner automatic transmission cost a whopping $1,750.00 brand new she drove it till about 1981 and sold it still running and in good shape, she bought a Honda sedan without any pollution controls what so ever it ran so clean that even in California allowed the Federal emissions controls laws to apply in California.
Scotty is right : a while ago I bought an old rav4 with 198000 the previous owner only used regular oil. I always use synthetic oil. Knowing the risks I switched to synthetic and one day after a had a huge leak.
Synthetic oil has broader temperature range than regular one. In US southwest, such as Arizona, soCal, Texas, you have to use synthetic oil because the afternoon temperature during summer time is out of the upperbound of the regular oil. In northern USA, follow Scotty's advice.
I just traded in my 2006, GMC Yukon XL Denali with 160,000 miles on the 6.0L Engine. Guess what I bought,... A 2012 Honda Ridgeline RT with 125,000 miles on it. has Power windows & Door Locks. Cold AC & A Hot Heater,... It seems to Run Great. (No dash warning lights are on.) Its Spacious, rides like a cadillac, I love having a truck bed again. Has a big Trunk built into the Truck Bed. tail gate opens downward or sideways like a car door!!! Made in Alabama. It's all the Truck I need. (Apparently I'm Not overcompensating for anything.) LOL It feels like a much Larger truck when I'm behind the wheel. I really Like it.
This is the same vehicle you said you have seen blown up engines in and it’s on the should not buy list. Now, it’s an excellent vehicle and has an extremely reliable engine.
Funny story I needed to bring a bunch of freight up to Alaska and found that the Hondas sell good in Alaska so I bought one in Omaha and planed to sell it when I got back to Alaska when I got back my wife and I decided to sell her Buick and keep the Honda 👍😉
I thought the same thing until I bought a Ridgeline!! On gravel roads in Canada I will never go back to Rear wheel drive junk because at a stop sign when you hit the gas to go you actually can get going you don’t get spin and spin and spin and spin. You might as well put the drive wheels where The weight of the truck is!
Regular oil in my 2002 Escalade since purchase. I can’t count how many times I’ve been asked about synthetic oil. The answer is always: not a suggestion from the manufacturer!!
The fornt of Honda Pilot, Ridgeline and Passport look too similar and I can never tell the difference when seeing them coming head on. I like the 2006-2014 Ridgeline better due to this. I also prefer a column shifter on a truck as well!
Hey Scotty I have a 2004 Honda CR-V with a 5 speed manual and 4 cylinder, it’s fun to drive fast but I don’t want to wear it out. 102k on the clock. What do you think?
Just do the Oil Changes on time, and all other services. Don't abuse the car especially if the car has had poor service. Treat it like a BMW, where if something breaks, fix it ASAP. Check the Transmission Fluid, and make sure its still pink. If its old and a bit brown, do a drain and fill. Only fill it up with Genuine Honda Transmission Fluid. Don't change it if it's a burnt black, and if there's a burnt odor. That mean's the tranny is dying. If i were you, i would change all the fluids since you hit 100k (Power Steering Fluid, Coolant, Brake Fluid, ect.) treat it good, and it will last. Source: Owner of 2006 Honda Civic EX.
Tide Pod thanks for the advice appreciate it. I bought the car around a month ago they had just changed the oil but I’m changing it again at 106 to keep up with scottys 5 thousand mile recommendation
Not sure about a '13 Ridgeline but my wife's '04 CRV had an airbag light though they'd never been deployed. Honda fixed the problem free long after she bought the CRV new.
Somebody: *Wants to sell their old vehicle* Somebody Else: "I want to buy your vehicle, but first I'd like to take it to a good mechanic to check out." Somebody: "Okay, I'll come with you." Somebody Else: "Okay, but my mechanic is in Texas." Somebody: "What? This is Alaska."
Scotty, according to my uncle who’s been a mechanic 30 years. The push for synthetic oil has been a environmental push and not a performance reason. Also with older cars most gaskets are cork based and synthetic oil is more acidic and will eat through your oil pan seals cause your said leaks. Interested if you have heard the same
Synthetic oil flows at much colder temperatures, so significantly less wear occurs during "start-up." To be clear, start-up is considered the temperature at which the car starts at, to operating temperature.
You are correct, I have a 2006 Ridgeline i got with 230,000 miles and the AirBag light was on, It was the drivers seat seatbelt switch, if i buckled before start up it would stay OFF, if i buckled after start up it would pop on the airbag light. Found out that Honda has a lifetime warranty on SRS and Seatbelt systems.....Fixed at the dealer for FREE about a week ago ! Warning, most dealers will try to get a code scan fee out of you....I got a really good honda scanner so i was not worried that this was the problem....they scanned and got the same codes i got a day before, no charge to me because i knew this was the problem and was covered by Honda !!

Worked at the Honda plant in Alabama building these things. They are a sophisticated S.O.B to build but they are great trucks!
My ridge is making a popping and then squeaking sound on the driver side rear. I changed the front bearing and axle because the mechanic told me it was that and it’s still doing it. Since you built them, do you know what it could be?
Abel What year model do you have?
Caleb Phillips 2008
Caleb Phillips the sound is gone now unless I got through a car wash.
$37k but you get generally really good reliability which is the main thing.
I switched to synthetic oil in my 2000 Toyota Tacoma after 100k and no leaks or problems!! And it's Walmart brand!!
I switched to Mobile-1 synthetic in my wife's '06 Highlander V6 also at about 100K, and it developed a small rear main seal leak after a couple of oil changes. The leak seems to have stopped after switching to Valvoline High-Mileage non-synthetic oil and adding ATP-205
you are lucky my friend, talked to plenty of people that regretted switching, even motorcycle riders like me.
That Walmart brand can be bought in bulk now. 12pack of it for $30. Not bad at all for synthetic oil!
I own a 2020 Ridgeline RTL-E and love it. Ridgelines are great if you want the convenience of a truck but also the nice ride and comfort of an upscale SUV. If you go off road or need to haul heavy things then get a full size pickup with a big V8.
curious how do the new ones compare in terms of ground clearance to the old ones?
@@robertberin4872 I'm not sure about the older model but the current ground clearance is 7.9 inches. Like I said, if you want to do some serious off roading, the Ridgeline isn't really a good fit for that.
I have used full synthetic in all my vehicles since they were new. At least now I feel good about having high mileage and just keeping up with synthetic not having to deal with switching now. Love the videos keep them coming...
A Sad Day for America was when they stopped production of the gen 6 Celica in 1999.
I spit out my drink with the graphic showed up when he said "It's made in Alabama!"
Delta rocket boosters are built in Decatur.
As a ex car salesman I sold these and they have great engines but what's the point when it overheats, head gaskets problems, and has a lot of electrical problems. Just buy a Toyota Tacoma base model.
Good advise from a salesman!
@@jaya.0069 ex car salesman 😂🏃
@junkmail So can you explain all the Honda Odysseys, Honda Accords and Pilots we bought at auction that had horrible electrical problems? With 20 to 50k miles. Honda makes great motors but I wouldn't trust them with my calculator when it comes to electrical or computer
@junkmail I have been driving a 2008 ridgeline for about 6 months.
140,000 miles runs great. Picked it up at an auction for totaled cars. It was an easy fix.
Since I don't know any history. What should I do about tranny fluid?
1. leave it alone?
2. Drain and fill 3 times
3 I will not do a mechanical flush.
As I always say never trust a salesman they only look at the style of the vehicle and the interior the rest of the vehicle have no idea what’s going on
Ridglines are awesome! Love mine!
Same
Me too, got a 2011 a couple years ago at 132k miles. Have put 30k more since then and the thing runs like a dream
242K on mine and still runs perfect. AC is Frio!

I have a 2011 Ridgeline - loaded and I love it. I can't wait to get a newer used one - newer style, but this truck just keeps carrying me around in style! Guess I will have to wait a while yet.
My dad has a 2012 ridgeline and he loves it. I have a 12 crv and I love it. I upgraded from the horizontal 4 banger( subaru outback)
I love it when you “call out” the bad guys!
i own a 2017 ridgeline v6 with 74 k and average over 23 mpg I have owned it over a year and the 23 has continued to reward me with great service

My 06 I just got had 109k and I got it for 10k.
I have a 2019 Ridgeline and I love it!
Hey what do you think of 2019 Rtl-E pretty much loaded with 66000 miles at $33000?

@@HectorBadillaOfficial it will get worse. I have an 06.
Glad to see your dog bite is healing well !. P.S. a piece of black electrical tape over the air bag light 👍🏽
Thanks Scotty! I feel better about that Honda pickup now.
I’m glad you said this!, I’ve been searching for these and with 199k miles these still go for 8k!
The Honda truck usually handles better than a regular truck. The trade off is towing capacity.
Towing yes but the payload capacity is surprising similar.
It’s now May 16 2022 and My neighbors 07 Honda Ridgeline finally died. 850,000 miles. Yes he bought another Ridgeline.
I love the old skool Ridgeline!!! Wish it came in a manual.
Or which ever goes first. Good luck I don't want it to be you.👍👍👍👍👍
Scotty thank you for saving me so much frustration.
That’s not a truck, that’s an SUV with a birth defect

Got rid of my 06 last year. Tranny loop in the radiator cracked and contaminated transmission fluid with coolant. Ruined the transmission. 150000 miles. It was a great vehicle. Put in a 100$ radiator as insurance. I heard they were known for this.
@@jamesnordseth3799 Thanks i will keep an eye on mine
Laughed so hard when Scotty said the price is going up and showed the Tin man image!
This truck has a timing belt and its an interference engine... to me thats a deal killer...
Achilles's heel....smh
Why I’d never consider this Honda.
That's why I didn't get one but I still have my 2002 Honda accord pushing 255 000 miles with a timing belt. .
@@MrRF007 i have 2 hondas both with timing chain ....
Check under the seats for disconnected seat wiring harnesses for the airbag light. If it is disconnected, jumping one of the wires will turn off the light. There are instructions online on how to clear that light. Many people disconnect the seat harness and start the car and can't get the airbag light off.
AC blows cold, it starts right up, it's a Japanese car.
We love our 2006 Ridgeline :)
New ones are really nice, very reliable, 26 MPG on the highway.
I just wish they were about 70" tall like an F150. I like to sit up high.
This body style was a lot nicer, than the current one. At least it looked somewhat like a pick up truck. The new one looks like a minivan with a bed.
'Cause that's what they are. Unibody, not body on frame..
Funny story I needed to bring a bunch of freight up to Alaska and found that the Hondas sell good in Alaska so I bought one in Omaha and planed to sell it when I got back to Alaska when I got back my wife and I decided to sell her Buick and keep the Honda 👍😉
I can't stand the fact they make a pickup truck front wheel drive.

90 percent of the time for Honda air bag lights to come on is usually seat belts switch! Driers is most commonly to fail! Easy fix!
You are correct, I have a 2006 Ridgeline i got with 230,000 miles and the AirBag light was on, It was the drivers seat seatbelt switch, if i buckled before start up it would stay OFF, if i buckled after start up it would pop on the airbag light. Warning, most dealers will try to get a code scan fee out of you....I got a really good honda scanner so i was not worried that this was the problem....they scanned and got the same codes i got a day before, no charge to me because i knew this was the problem and was covered by Honda !!
