Super Genius girl! I wanted to design a binary to BCD converter and I thought I had to convert the binary codes to decimal and then convert the decimal ones to BCD and it was a complicated way to get my answer.

Texas' Instruments had an IC (74 185) that could convert up to 5 binary bits to two sets of BCD.

BCD (binary-coded decimal) more closely represents the way we think about numbers (the decimal system). Of course this is at the expense of data density since each digit of our number uses a nible. We also see an advantage when displaying data since it is already in a format close to what we use. The wiki has some other good examples of why we use it!

@@imhareesh9096 8421 code is called BCD code because it's actually just another name for BCD code. It comes from the fact that BCD encodes each digit of a number only using 4 bits which are 8, 4, 2, 1.
