In theory, the total number of bits would be irrelevant. The focus is on the total number of 1's being an even or odd amount. In your 32 bit example, using an imaginary binary code of; 0010 0001 0101 1110. Here we have seven 1's - now 7 is an ODD number. Now if the parity number used is 0 then this is an ODD PARITY. If it is a 1 then it will be an EVEN PARITY (7 + 1 = 8 bits). Hope that makes sense!
