    I have 88 vols in my collection and have spent $680 on them. Most of it is yen press and seven seas which retail for higher, but buying used is the only way I could afford this hobby. I don't plan to own every series and I don't need to complete every set. But getting good deals at Half Priced Books or Ebay makes collecting worth it, and I like the idea of having a library of things that I enjoy.

    I follow four rules
    1. First read it online if possible know what your getting into
    2. I do a 1 volume rule instead of 3 you are buying one volume to get into a series if you have to buy 3 volumes just to maybe like a series overtime it would be annoying/expensive if you are new to the collecting scene especially with a budget because you could have used that money for a series you actually like.
    3. Check to see if they have other formats of the series you like for example box sets (chainsaw man recently smh) another example for me is vinland saga I own the first 5 and now they are going to release a deluxe edition. Always check to see if they have other options for your budget
    4. Never compare your collection to others everyone has different tastes on manga/light novels don't follow anyone's tastes as facts unless they say Berserk is goat

    BIIIIGGGG Props for this and hope it will help people. I see people NO JOKE buy ALL their manga retal and not on sale or thru RS or Instocktrades etc where its not full price.
    I have to tell them for every 1k you spend I spend $700 for the same things OR I can just get 30 more manga etc. I shop in store a lot also but im a member and use the $25 off 100 or more coupon EVERY time

    In Puerto Rico, we only have one active Comic Shop with constant Manga restocks and new releases. We also have a local bookstore that carry Manga as well. I tend to blend my purchases between online for discounts and a few purchases at those 2 shops to support them.

    I waited until Barnes and nobles to have a manga deal to buy my boruto manga, the recent deal saved me quite a bit.
    By the way the sale is still going on in Barnes and Nobles, I believe ends march 26 online.

    Those who like to shop in person and don't mind used manga can also save $$$ by shopping at places like Half Price Books. They could also end up running into oop manga there if they're lucky. Some libraries will also sell manga when stuff they already have enough of are donated to them & they'll sell them for extremely cheap, like somewhere between fifty cents and two dollars.

    I would say with not only waiting for deals sometimes you can go on places like Mercari and get some good stuff. Like I got the complete Zombiepowder manga (4 Volumes) for like 25 bucks or so. A series that's oop and made by the same man who created Bleach like lets go!!

    3 volume rule goes against the whole point of saving… just change it to a 1 volume rule. If after 200 pages a creator can’t hook you that’s on them. Change your rule to it’s gotta be ‘all killah, no fillah’ and you’ll be aight.

    I actually just recently calculated how much money I spent on manga and found out I wasted a fair bit of money when I started out lol. I spent way more than I should have. It's a lot more different now though.
    By the way, do you have any other rooms where you display your manga, figures, and other anime merch?

    step 1 of financial literacy in manga collecting: dont buy manga if you live in canada. unless its used, but since we have such a small market your not gonna find any used manga to buy anyway
    edit: by the way regarding using credit cards, when shopping online i advise to never use a debit card. if someone manages to get ur info and steal money from your debit card its gone forever, where as a credit card is insured. stay safe out there lads

    • @TheDarkSage
      @TheDarkSage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe sites like Indigo and Bookdepository are great places for Canadian users (from what I’ve heard).
      Also, I heavily agree with your edited tip you put!

    • @graham5961
      @graham5961 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheDarkSage unfortunately there are no places in canada to buy manga at discounted price (rightstuff, takara cafe, etc). its full price everywhere, or a measly 10% discount with the paid indigo membership. and of course any online purchases will cost u likely more than the volume itself in shipping.... couple this with the fact that non viz(13$) volumes run us 17-20$ CAD per volume depending on the publisher, its not just not a feasible hobby for me anyway.
      Ive long since given up on manga collecting as a canadian, it sucks but it is what is i. sometimes you can make use of the free shipping on rightstuff, but u have to spend like 300$ to get it so thats more of a once a year thing during the big sales.
