  • Custom Shop Fender Stratocaster 61 Ltd Edition - Roasted Ash / Maple with Hand-Wound Texas Special Pick-ups - Does the Roasted Wood make a Difference?
    In recent weeks I’ve been looking at a number of Fender Stratocasters and this time round, we take a look at this Custom Shop Fender Stratocaster 61 - Ltd Edition Roasted with Hand-Wound Texas Special pick-ups and do a tone comparison with my favourite Stratocaster - A Custom Shop Late 64 with Hand-Wound Fat 60s. The big question, other than the different pick-ups is, does the body wood and the roasted treatment make any difference to tone and sustain? While it would be best to compare 2 guitars with the same pick-ups for a more accurate answer to that question, nevertheless... it's still a great opportunity to place 2 great guitars side-by-side. A big thank you to a good friend of mine who loaned me this beautiful guitar so I could do this review. Apart from that, it was a very nice guitar to have and play for a week.

    Great comparison, but you could measure the PU output and also the thickness of the neck at the 1st and 12th fret.
    I have Fender CS strat with Ancho Poblano PUs- which sound to me like best of both of your sets: output of the texas and warmt of fat 60s PUs. Great pickups!
    Cheers!

      Hi J. Thanks for the comment... I had to look up those pick-ups you mention... and for those who might be reading your message, here's a quote - "The Ancho Poblano LTD Strat pickups give special attention to the construction of the bridge single-coil. Utilizing Alnico 5 magnets, enamel wire, and flat pole pieces, this pickup pushes plenty of output and exudes an aggressive voice." That sounds very interesting. Regarding measuring PU output and neck thickness... I was a bit short on time making this video but I'll bear that in mind in future...I appreciate the feedback... Happy New Year... Regards: Stu

      Hi Amin - As always, many thanks for watching and commenting. I do hope the New Year is good for you Amin - what are your plans?
      Do I regret selling all my gear from many years ago? I probably did at the time, but my life was pretty messed up and my journey took a very different path. And so I had to sell all my equipment to survive, as it was a difficult time in the early eighties in the UK, and I also needed money to start a new business - Commercial Photography. With a lot of hard work and a young lady who would become my wife encouraged me to succeed. And so began a whole new adventure... ;-) Take care Amin... best regards: Stu

    That is one nice looking Strat. The late 64 sounds as more muffeled and a bit weaker.I like the roasted one more as it delivers an broader palette as I knew it would, a muffeling can be made by dialing tone and the amplifier.
    A unreliced jack socket on a reliced Custom Shop... In my mind that is an insult!

    • @StuGuitarChannel
      @StuGuitarChannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Steve... Yes that's a pretty good description... you can of course just put a bit more tone and gain on the amplifier to address some of that with the Fat 60s but they both definitely have their own character. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a reliced jack socket? Regards: Stu

      @@StuGuitarChannel Yes, it would be an bumer if they where the same.
      Well I have, swet eating that crome plating making it dull showing bare metal and schratches. Well I was an young guy playing furiosly.
      After one session I was sulky wet as with the guitar, swet, drule and skinoil all over it.
      A true relicing should in my mind show ageing, whear and tear on every part.

      @@stevepelham9010 Lol - sweaty guitars… as a youngster I had major surgery which ended up causing me to sweat profusely and I had a Strat re-done in white nitro-cellulose which soon started to erase away as my sweat started removing the lacquer. That Strat was also rusty everywhere, in those early days we were often in a cloud of Banana Fog Oil Smoke, Dry Ice, Thunderflash residue etc. and everything got filthy. I also had make-up on my hands (don’t ask) and it all ended up in a gooey mess on the fingerboard and strings… That Strat ended up being set on fire… (don’t ask)… I don’t think the word relic had been invented back then, if I’d known I would have kept it and perhaps sold it today for millions… ;-) Regards: Stu

      @@StuGuitarChannel 😀I remember my grandpas Gibson ES-335. He was proven a non Saint but he was holding up an clean snobbery act accusing others even me cause me having some beer and sausage. He turned to my mum. -look all that beer is that boy an Bozo? That guitar of his was soaked with Bourbon and tobacco, realy nasty to hold telling it all.

    Another good review Stu,what an interesting strat,I’ve heard of torrification on guitars mostly acoustics,I wonder how they get the finish big hot ovens perhaps,anyway it’s a very nice guitar and sounds great but very different to yours to my ears at least but as you say you can tweak both to suit your needs,a wee question can you roll back the treble on the bridge pickup on this one and your own,as some do and some don’t ,another great review,best wishes till the next one 👍🎸👍🎸

      Hi Tosh... thanks for watching and commenting... I'm not sure how they go about roasting the wood, I have a couple of good books on Fender guitars, I'll need to see if there is anything mentioned on that. Yes you can roll back the tone and that is something I tend to do with all my Strats depending on what I'm doing, although when it comes to recording within a busy mix, that treble comes in very handy to cut through. This is also where I like to use my Telecaster in recording as well. I'm looking forward to hearing your own Strat's, some of those early Japanese models were fabulous guitars. In the next video I picked up a nice little pedal that really helps give a lift to Single Coil guitars without messing up their tonal clarity. All the best for the coming New Year Tosh... Hermosa guitarra.

Saludos: Stu

      Hi Virgil - Thanks for the message... I have had a cursory look at that manufacturer on-line but not had a chance to visit a music store to take a closer look, but when I get an opportunity I'll certainly give them a try. Regards: Stu
