20 Years Did A Number On My CBR900RR's Brake Calipers

  • The front brakes on my 1994 Honda CBR900RR hadn’t been serviced in decades. It was high time to pull the calipers apart and have a look inside.

    Hey! I might not have any technical insight to offer, but I want to thank you for publishing yet another great video. I've been a subscriber for the better part of two years, and though I have never commented on any of your videos, I truly do enjoy them. Your presentation style is so refreshingly... mild-mannered and grounded, in this place of excess. I recently sold my clapped out VFR750 to cover some medical expenses, and TH-cam is the only way I can scratch that itch for the time being. Thank you for creating such quality content!

    Glazed rotors and pads. Mercedes Benz, even 30 yrs ago, sent brake pads with sandpaper glued on, to the dealerships, as a special tool, to install, and drive the car around the parking lot, to " rough up" the glazed rotors. It worked pretty good, got rid of the noise. Restored stopping power. Had to sand the brake pads too, or replace.

    Put some copper grease on the back of the pads. The noise could be the pads vibrating.

    I've got this same noise although not as loud on my 99 CBR 900rr. I just replaced the brake pads as well but noise is still there. Watched this video then immediately went and bought some DOT4 and took my calipers apart. Same issue but only on the right side caliper was completely clogged. Glad I watched this as I was considering buying new calipers.

    Next job is the same on my ‘99 RRX Blade.. I have no noise, but there is a judder through the bars when braking hard from high(ish) speed. Potentially warped discs, but I’ll pull the callipers apart too and check the pistons aren’t sticking. Good video. Wish I had an airline 🤗

    The rotors are probably mounted with uneven pressure-e.g. one of the rotor bolts is probably much looser than the others, creating a flexible zone which vibrates at high frequency when braking pressure is applied. Think of a tuning fork and how you can silence it by pinching the sides that vibrate.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hadn't thought about that - thank you! I'll check the rotor bolts out!

    I agree with a previous commenter. Possibly the rotors. They could be warped or unbalanced, casing a harmonic vibration.

    glazed rotors & brake pads and unintended use of the brakes
    when I bought my 954 blade it also had squealing brakes with oem pads. After having cleaned and sanded the rotors and the pads it didn't squeal at first but soon started to squeal again after having used the brakes with low braking force in city traffic.
    Then I decided just to use the brakes hard and they have not been squealing since.
    Yes, the original pads might be too hard for riding like a puss and only braking lightly.

  • @daddylovesfaith
    @daddylovesfaith 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Copper paste the pads backing plate and anywhere it touches the caliper (use loads). You're experiencing brake squeal, which is where the pads vibrate under braking application. The copper paste acts as a damping agent.

    Enjoyed the background funky music
    .
    Cringed when the piston went flying.
    With the brakes, perhaps more details. Lubing the sliders, and the back of the pads. Cleaning the rotors and checking their thickness as well would help.

  • @robertschiela8355
    @robertschiela8355 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not sure if you still have the problem. I'd suggest replacing the pad hardware- pad pins and spring clip. The spring can lose its tension over time and the pins can wear a groove where they contact the pads. Then the vibration makes noise. I think that's often the cause when lubing or other fixes are temporary but the noise comes back.

    Take some sandpaper to your rotors and see if that clears it up first. If it's just been city driven, it probably glazed up.

    Just saw your video on the brake calipers. It appears at first sight that you had yourself a very dangerous condition with the rear pistons being seized into position. I would have to say that there is a possibility of cross contamination from "someone" using something other than DOT4 brake fluid as a top up. This can lead to some nasty crap inside the system itself. I would suggest a brake line replacement as well with those rubber lines on the machine being as old as they are need to be changed because they WILL burst one day. Hydraulic fluid should be done every two years with regular use as it does degrade and at a faster rate with aggressive riding and high temps it does so much faster.

    your rotors look glazed and may need to be resurfaced because of uneven wear due to piston failure

  • @Turbinepilot
    @Turbinepilot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would pinpoint it down to the rotors. They might be pretty glazed. m.th-cam.com/video/QjKJKt9DAT4/w-d-xo.html
    Try that and see how it goes. Plus depending on how long you had those pads in with only one side wearing with the stuck pistons your pads might be not wearing straight.
