  • Race footage and recap from my first ultramarathon - the Yeti 100 mile Endurance Run in Damascus, Virginia on September 25, 2020.
    The race was both brutal and beautiful, starting at 5 am in a torrential downpour as we ran 14 miles up a 3% grade trail from Damascus to the Green Cove train station before pounding back downhill to complete the first loop of 28 miles. We then ran 4 loops from Damascus past the Alvarado train station to the turnaround across the Watauga Trestle, each 18 miles. It rained and poured for 12 hours!
    Congrats to everyone who ran and battled. Thank you to Race Director Jason Green for putting together an unforgettable experience with all the 2020 Covid19 challenges, and thank you to all the volunteers at packet pickup, aid stations, and behind the scenes.
    I will be back next year. The flame is burning brighter!
    The race was won by professional Hoka ultrarunner Patrick Reagan in 13:33. First female finisher (and 3rd overall) was ultrarunner Nicole Monette in 16:19.

    Sorry about the DNF! The weather was horrible for this years race. Sounds like you have a good plan going forward, but be careful about going on too many 30 mile long runs. Maybe look into back to back 20-25 mile runs. You can do it!

    • @RunFreeandStrong
      @RunFreeandStrong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks, and as you know, it's part of the process and it happens (40% of starters DNF'ed). There were times (especially before sunrise running up to Green Cove) where the trails turned to streams and the trestles were very slippery.
      Yeah good point on long runs. I have 9 months to the Yeti 50 miler and a year to the 100 miler, so I've started to put a training framework together. I wouldn't do more than one every 6-8 weeks. But you remind me I should plan some long back to backs.
      Appreciate your continued support!

    After watching this video and the 4 trail runs that followed, there is no doubt you are already have constructed the mental fortress beyond the 100-miler. Appears to be just a matter of pacing physically through it. My first and only 100-miler to date was self-supported and took just over 30 hours. With an experienced running mate, I honestly believe you will cross sub-24 faster than you thought possible. Thoroughly enjoying your channel. Keeping it real. Thank you.

    I know it's old, but congrats on cranking out so many miles in such crap weather! And for tackling the 100 after expecting the 50! That's the kind of crazy challenge that I find so motivating and inspiring! I've discovered the benefit to strategic DNFs. When you said you wanted to push through the issues to "complete" your first ultra - after already completing a 50 miler, I was like "Don't do iiiit!!" 😂 I've found that when I'm destroyed at the halfway point, in a way a 30 minute break and a boatload of food and fluid won't fix, it's time to go. If I stop at that point, my fitness takes a leap forward, and I can get back to training much more quickly, and smash the next race. If I push myself to finish where it's 100% walking for more than a third of the race distance, I'm going to be a wreck, and it'll take much longer to recover, and I won't have met any of my goals. I'm willing to take minor injuries if I'm meeting my A or B time goals, but my C goal is always "Finish Uninjured". I can't wait to go refresh my memory on how you progressed after this!!

    Great documentation of the race Ray, sorry it didn't go to plan. It's all a learning experience & you've learned a lot, 100's are a different ball game altogether. It was interesting to see you didn't wear a race vest? Did you just use the aid stations for fuelling? Also I've had that feeling of being dizzy & struggling with an injury but found that using poles helped me enormously, just being able to take some pressure off with the poles can be enough of a difference. Good luck with the recovery & training, a good idea is to incorporate some back to back long runs in your training & you're 100% right in focusing on strength for your core, that will do wonders. Maybe take that extra time pressure off yourself as well, on a big race like that, get the job done & when you know you can do it, then give yourself a time goal in the future. Really enjoyed the video & hopefully next time the rain stays away! 👍🏃

    • @RunFreeandStrong
      @RunFreeandStrong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! Agree it was an amazing learning experience and as I mentioned in the video recap, there are a few things I want to improve. I brought my Nathan VaporAir 7L vest, but ended up running with my UltimateDirection Signature Series ultra belt that has 2x 600ml soft bottles and room for a sandwich and energy bar. Because the aid stations were every 7 miles, I preferred to run light and use the combo of the UD belt and aid stations. I bought the Black Diamond Carbon Z poles, and was planning to use these on the final loop, but the collapsed hip took me out of the race. Thank you very much for your feedback, advice and encouragement!

    Epic race! Thanks for sharing your story, very humble approach and good analysis. Such a long race on your first ultra, wow!!! How is you hip feeling now? Has the pain gone down?
    To make sure I get the volume within 24hrs without risking injuries during training, I usually try to fit in some twice a day long runs, 2 days in a row. As for hills, on short runs you could also maybe integrate some stairs training? Well done anyway, very impressive. Keep up the amazing work.

    The hardest line to cross is always the start. I too suffer from hip problems similar to yours, which I must report seem to be more prevalent in older runners. I'm in my 60's. What has been your solution to this issue? Thx

      Thanks for your kind comment and for sharing your experience. My hip issue is related to 2 herniated discs in my lower back, and I just completed the Seven Trails 100-mile ultra (video on my channel) and back / hip issues bothered me from 100K (62 miles) to the finish. I do daily strength & mobility exercises, including single leg exercises, and now use trekking poles late in an ultra. Hope that helps.

    Great video and congrats on your race. A DNF is never easy, but 71 miles is a helluva an accomplishment. I was there at the race this year and it was not an easy one. If i may give some advice as a coach and fellow runner, be very wary of 75 mile weeks. Thats a ton of mileage and wear and tear before you even get to the starting line. Obviously high mileage is important, but it's also about quality. feel free to rwach out to me at fmsrunning@gmail.com if you have any questions. Great job again!
