    I'm training to qualify for the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) in 2025, and I am registered for the 100-mile Canyons Endurance Run by UTMB on April 26, 2024 in Auburn, California. I'm making one final push to wrap up training before my taper for Canyons. In this video, please join me on a 3-day journey on the Appalachian Trail where I battle both miserable weather conditions, gnarly trails, and cumulative fatigue to run 40 miles (64 km) and 11,500 feet (3,500 m) of vertical gain and descent.
    0:00 Intro
    0:19 Start of Friday 10-mile run
    1:17 Goal of 3-day final push is cumulative fatigue
    1:38 Training on steeper vert than Canyons 100 M race
    2:10 Training below average pace required for Canyons cutoff times
    3:21 1,000 ft climb to Caleb's Peak
    4:32 Running downhills to harden legs and back
    5:05 Miserable weather conditions help prepare for unknowns in Canyons
    5:35 Weather conditions further deteriorate
    6:20 Start of Sunday 20-mile run
    6:58 Crossing Guinea Brook barefoot
    7:37 Cumulative fatigue on day 3
    8:30 Climbing and descending are both important
    9:30 The East Coast is the Beast Coast - nothing but rocks
    9:55 Climbing through canyon
    11:05 Sunday weather turns
    11:23 Not prepared and trying to stay warm

    Great job with getting the elevation in Reto. I was getting nervous for you crossing the river, those stones can be super slippery! Let’s just say the weather was an extra element of training 🌧️

      Hi Martin, thank you for watching! You're right, the rocks were slippery and the currents were strong. The weather is an extra element of training, the Canyons (like the Western States 100) can be very hot, so I will be mentally prepared to run outside of my comfort zone.

    Rain or shine, you're out there, pushing your limits and embracing every challenge. Your journey is a reminder to us all that sometimes the toughest paths lead to the most beautiful destinations. Keep shining, Reto!

      Hi Mihai, thank you, and as you know, we can't change what we don't control. So when it rains, it's best to let it rain!

    I'm glad you mentioned not pushing everything all at once. Vert and time on feet, not pace on this one... makes perfect sense. Nice work, Reto 👍🏻🏃‍♂️

      Thanks Mark. There are training days when we work on pace and speed, and for Canyons, it's gonna be a slow death march lol.

    It's been fquite a while since I've commented on your channel. I'm trying to watch more of your videos; sharing your training plan, data and training runs is awesome and helpful to me. I'm not training for an ultra; right now just trying to get health and fitness levels restored by doing a run/walk plan and cross training. The videos of your runs on the AT always bring up fond memories as I grew up in the northeast USA and hiked the AT quite a bit (and did some backpacking too). The 'beast coast' is totally true! Best of luck in the Canyons event! I'll be cheering for you :)

      Thank your very much for your kind words and support! I'm glad to hear that your regaining health and fitness, and run/walk is an excellent way of doing that. As we say among trail runners, one foot in front of the other, let's get to the next aid station.

    What a fun place to run, Reto. I'll have to get out there some time.

      Thank you, Labe. Blessed to be close to the AT, and it would be so much fun to meet up (whether here or somewhere else) and run together!

    You are constantly destroying your training block and now you have a well-deserved taper before the big day, enjoy it and most importantly crush the big day 🔥🔥😍

    Hi Reto, that's a really impressive final push, and the conditions looked really tricky on the AT. Impressive crossing that river! I'm glad that you've come through all that extreme training without any injuries and you can taper, so it's only about 10 days from now?

      Hi Andy, it's been a fun and challenging training journey, and appreciate you following along. Canyons starts on April 26 at 9 am!

    That is some super technical trail. What was the brand/model of that yellow goretex top?

    • @RunFreeandStrong
      @RunFreeandStrong  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Chris. The top is made by Loeffler Clothing in Austria. I've started to buy some European clothing because cross country skiing and biking are more popular there, and lots of cross-over to running clothing. Unfortunately, Canyons mandatory equipment requires a hooded jacket, so I'll use my Patagonia Houdini. What about you?

    • @Smashycrashy
      @Smashycrashy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RunFreeandStrong I have lots of heavier rain/winter technical shells because of hiking but for running usually I have the Salomon Bonatti thrown in the pack. I liked the hoodless goretex idea for some of the milder bad weather. For Canyons current forecast it’ll be the Houdini like you since I don’t expect to use it.

    • @RunFreeandStrong
      @RunFreeandStrong  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Smashycrashy The hoodless goretex is fab, super light and packs down, much better than Houdini, and has zippered (with flap) pocket in lower back. Appreciate you sharing!
