do yourself a favor, listen to the studio versions first, there’s so much more detail you can pick up and you can hear how it was meant to sound….no crowd noise or feedback, etc. The live versions are then great for showing off how spectacularly talented they are, both in their ability to actually play exceptionally well live, but also in their ability to improvise and make every rendition special.

@@annother3350 I found this description but it confuses things by using the word flutes as an alias for recorders. 'So you can’t blame anyone for not knowing Jones played three different flutes on “Stairway to Heaven.” In Led Zeppelin: All the Songs (2018), the authors break down the track’s instrumentation, crediting Jones with bass, tenor, and soprano recorders.
So when you hear Page open the track with his famous guitar riff, the first man to join him is Jones on bass recorder. Shortly after, he enters the mix harmonizing with himself on soprano and tenor recorders. (Jones reportedly pushed for the recorders.)
In live shows, Jones covered his bass and flute parts using a Mellotron. That means that, altogether, Jones played six instruments to get “Stairway” down on record and at concerts. Calling him “a secret weapon” seems like an understatement.'

How Stairway to Heaven was written.
This is a link to James Patrick Page explaining his thoughts on the composition. th-cam.com/video/DDo4CA13LbY/w-d-xo.html
He refers to Johann Sebastian Bach having an influence. Incidentally Bach's music was largely forgotten or not performed for many years after his death. I myself think the song follows a similar progression of the music to Maurice Ravel's "Bolero".

Well Led Zepplin was made of 4 of the greatest musicians of all time. But no they didn't have computer software to contour the sound like they do today. Jimmy Page invented the double neck. He went to Gibson and asked them specifically to build that guitar for him. So he could have each neck tuned differently without having to keep switching guitars while he was playing live. They guitar effects pedals back then but Jimmy didn't use much in the way of effects on his guitars. Mainly just a tape echo and gismotron that was used on the intro to one song and I think that was pretty much it. When he was with Zepplin.

They were heavy as hell and expensive, but they have a very special sound. Check Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues.

There's the old legend that Robert Johnson gave the devil his soul (at the crossroad) in exchange for guitar prowess. Page totally made me think of that. Black magic rocker

That solo sux compared to the studio version solo. It’s like he isn’t as good as his younger self. That wasn’t a very ‘clean’ solo. I’ve heard Jimmy say in an interview before that there is a song they didn’t play live because he made the solo so hard to play that he can’t get it right every time. Can’t for the life of me remember which song he said it was.

@@frankiek2269 I absolutely disagree. THIS version of the solo is by far my favorite. And I say this as someone who learned to love the song with the studio version and was biased in its favor at first.
The fact that a good percentage of this is live stage improvisation that follows only vaguely the track of the original song makes it only even MORE impressive.

Jimmy Page is a sure genius here; the solo is simply staggering. He makes his guitar sing, wail, cry, laugh, and sends us into a journey to our inner minds and cosmic consciousness.

8:29 "I think the drums literally change the whole vibe of the song." The drummer, John Henry Bonham is arguably (and certainly in my opinion) the greatest drummer who ever lived. AND in one of the greatest bands of all time, in their signature tune, he doesn't play a beat for the first six and a half minutes. THAT right there is the GENIUS of Led Zeppelin.

Love me some John Bonham as a top 5 drummer . As a full on percussionist Neil Peart of Rush was in a class all his own. Your favorite drummers favorite drummer. 🤘RUSH 🤘 Canada 🇨🇦 number 1 in the world 🌎 😁.

:) He's not. But he is definitely one of the most influential (along with Paice and Moon forced me to be a drummer) and unique drummers, one whose style is recognizable and rather universally liked (though Buddy Rich didn't think of him much). There are stories how he would fight with Plant or Page over playing a tune live, because he couldn't get it really right live and was too stressed to play (maybe one of the reasons he abused so much) - that doesn't really make him the greates drummer. Especially not who ever lived. But as I say - unique, infulential, liked, recognizable, imaginative, sensitive, with a great feel for what would sound best for a piece - sure. Amazing listen. And a favorite. But not a greatest (that is not saying he was bad any). It is nice that many people think what you think about him, he deserves praises and being rememebered as a force in rock.

Ok now, you can't do Zeppelin without doing whole lot of love. A real sweet one is called thank you. Used to sing it in my wife's ears as we danced and held each other, now that she has passed I tear up every time I listen to it. The words were how I thought of our love. There is a lot of Zeppelin out their, so have fun.🌷✌

A lovely memory to hold and cherish, good sir. My wife was a Zep fan too and one thing she insisted on was that Stairway got played at her funeral - so this beautiful song always hits hard these days and always brings to mind the mental image of blazing sunlight through the church's stained glass windows spilling over her willow coffin.

Hello Bisscute, after this absolute Led Zeppelin masterpiece Stairway to Heaven from the seventies I would highly recommend listening to Deep Purple with Child in Time (studio version) as the next one for your comments. Also a seventies song, both songs belonging to the five best rock ballads ever made in heavy rock/ metal history.
