Great list of albums of the year. That Faceless Burial is most excellent. Arizmenda - Spider's lust in Dungeon's dust is a highlight for me this year. Saw them live twice this year and picked up their new album at their most recent show and really glad I did! Nothing else like it.

Nifty idea including an artist spotlight as part of your top list. I keep meaning to listen to the two Trolldom records. Keep up those "Updates" and be safe! 🤘🤘🤘
Good list, and plenty things for me to look for. Some recommendations for you in case you've missed them. Mnima - Disciples of Excremental Liturgies (caustic black noise from Greece), Ashenspire = Hostile Architecture (think A Forest of Stars meets Chat Pile), Am Himmel - As Eternal as the Starless Kingdom of Sorrow (mystical black metal that feels like being in a religious trance), Bad Manor - The Haunting (Spoopy black metal that recalls Edward Gorey's illustration in both theme and mood), and Unyielding Love - Flesh of the Furnace (dissonant blackened death). Hopefully that gives some fun things for you to listen 😊

Some great stuff in there. Didn't realise Escotrilihum had a new one. I need to get to Perdition Temple as a band. And the Ataraxy was a real "whoops" in this video and I hastily added it to the description honourable mentions, but really should have found it's way in the 20.

Was looking foward to this video, excellent choices Simon! Never got around to Faceless Burial among the swathes of other releases. I'm sure Marc G will forgive you... he'll love to hear your Enchanting thoughts about the album sometime in 2023.
Apart from the Theriomorph and Altars Ablaze, the BM stuff here is for the most part unknown to me. But I have not been in my normal BM mood this year, to much great DM this year. Our lists will be very different this year, will try to shoot mine tomorrow. Jade is still glimbing on my list, great album. Altars is one I need some more time with. Not surprised to see Faceless Burial on top of your list. Have a excellent new year. Cheers.
Soild list right there Simon! Obviously I’m not familiar with the BM releases… but as I’m trying to educate myself a bit more on the different styles within the genre… it gives me a few more to check out! I really need to pickup a few of the others that you showed… especially… the ‘Blasphematory’ release! Always good to see you Simon & all the best for 2023… from your friend ‘Cark G’… lol!🤘🏻
Great list Simon. I always enjoy your videos. I need to check out that Jade album. One album i feel flew under the radar this year is from Pharmacist out of japan. Andrew Lee plays guitar on the whole album. It has a Carcass vibe to it.
Great stuff, nice to shout out Swartadaupuz cause what he's doing is remarkable - one of my favorite modern era BM releases is by another bands fronted by - 2021 Digerdöden album. Let me paste my favorite albums list - lot of doom there Messa - "Close" Trhä - "tálcunnana dëhajma tun dejl bënatsë..." Eric Wagner - "In The Lonely Light Of Mourning" Chat Pile - "God's Country Devil Master -"Ecstasies Of Never Ending Night Thy Listless Heart - "Pilgrims Of The Path Of No Return"
Dream Unending was my #1.. you won’t be disappointed. Suggestions: Jesus Wept “Psychedelic Degeneracy” Wormlust “The feral wisdom” Sunrise Patriot Motion “Black Fellflower Stream” Homeskin “Integument Crystallization” Qrixkuor “Zoetrope” Doubtsour “The Endless Shadow of Despicable Power”
blasphematory, eskhaton, tzompanti would all make my list too.most everything else i havent heard yet, so alot for me to check out, things not listed i would include= ares kingdom, acid witch, bloodstorm, disma, sacrocurse. hmm, thats all that comes to mind right now. in the realms of more traditional/doom eric wagner's s/t, early moods and savage master need mentioning. i know i'm forgetting a bunch of stuff, but oh well. feel that once i hear more of what ive missed it will have been a monster year, as its already shook out pretty darn good for me. cheers simon. have agreat new year ..
You are REALLY awesome, sir! After seeing a handful of your videos I gotta subscribe!!! Its rare to find a guy like you with your knowledge and taste in metal, that isn't a straight up asshole.
IDK if you like that really Running Wild-style melodic death metal that the controversial band Arghoslent makes, but if you like them (hopefully not for their lyrics and song titles 😬) check out Trumpets Blare In Blazing Glory by the Canadian band Grenadier. Such a freaking killer debut album! Happy 2023, Simon!
@@ExplosiveAction I have been spinning the hell out of it this year on TH-cam and their Bandcamp page (before it got taken down) and now I finally have some money to get it on Bandcamp, as Viking Music Distribution still has the album on their page.

Great Picks... just ordered of the albums you mentioned. If you haven't checked out I Am The Night - While The Gods Are Sleeping and Pestilent Hex - The Ashen Abhorrence... the Emperor anno 1994 vibes are strong on those two albums. Both are my shared #1 album of 2022... and #2 Cosmic Putrefaction #3 Aaara #4 Sumerian Tombs - S/T #5 In Aphelion - Moribound
Excellent review with lots of comparisons. I'm surprised that Goatwhore's "Angel's hung at the gates of Heaven" and Hath's latest (2022) release didn't make your top 20 list. There are lots of new bands on your list that I'll have to check out, though.
Great video. Thanks. I like the way when you say "Jesus Christ! This is awesome album!" or "Oh my god! This is incredible album!" talking about all that obscure, sick, rotten sounds 🤣🤣 Many of the mentioned I don't know/ will check soon. Some albums worth hearing from this year for me (not necessarily in category "album of the year"): NEGATIVE PLANE "The Pact" BLACK DEATH CULT "Diaspora" MOLTEN CHAINS "Orisons of Vengeance" DESTROYER 666 "Never Surrender" (even if some of the reviews on MA are negative, for me killer album) RITUAL DEATH "S/T" FORLESEN "Black Terrain" ZOS "The Whole of the Body I Call ZOS" VOIVOD "Synchro Anarchy" ASSUMPTION "Hadean Tides" Cheers!
Hahaha, I am quite expressive with my recommendations I guess. The Negative Plane I agree is great and I need to spend more time with it, as I do with the Assumption album. Not heard the new Destroyer but Wildfire was solid - I didn't like the launch single from the new album though. Will look into the other bands you mentioned!
@@ExplosiveAction I will definetly listen to it. They are one of those "love at first listen bands". btw. dunno If you've heard, but check band called Taphos and their release from 2018 Come Ethereal Soberness (If you haven't ofc)

Hey Simon. I’m really enjoying your videos. Sitting here now listening to an ancient goldie Resurrection “Embalmed Existence” Do you know this one? Four horn salute to you sir.
Wow, some obscure stuff there - ive not heard of any of em lol - im not up to date with new stuff, ive always been old school but i do try and listen to newer stuff when i can
@@ExplosiveAction The way I see it, Miscreance is mix made of Death, Pestilence and Atheist... And that is enough for me! Anyway, wish you all the best in new year and many banger records to add to your collection! Happy New Year to all people around the globe!
This is truly the best AOTY list I have seen from anyone so far. You and I both have very obscure things on our lists. You should go to our channel called The Great Metal Debate and check out our newest video titled Episode 76. It is our Top 30 albums of 2022. The majority of my picks are underground black metal but I do have some slam and death metal in my list as well.
@@ExplosiveAction brother im so sorry i didnt reply to u earlier re fleetwood . if i find il share LMAO need to ask u tho,,, if christ himself was now, would he not be a death metal artist... the absolute anti church etc lmao
It's funny to see black/death metal top 20 of the year with only two albums recognizable. It's even funnier when they aren't any of the those 2022 albums that have won the universal acclaim among metalheads around the world: Misþyrming, Immolation, Watain, Deathspell Omega or Gaerea. And finally, huge overrepresentation of bands from Australia should be noted. I don't know how to comment on this because I'm still laughing out loud.
Just because "everyone else" is picking popular bands, why would I? That's something worth laughing at. I'm not Decibel Magazine. Watain are generic and not worthy of top 100. Immolation is fine but it's just the same as the last one. You should actually listen to Australian bands, because they are destroying right now. And you know how to comment, because you just did. Badly.
@@ExplosiveAction OK, I'll try all those aussies. And if I find just one BM album in your top 20 with music quality even comparable to the last Misþyrming, I'll buy it and eat it live with the cover.
Misþyrming is a good band, and I had their previous two albums, but upon re-listening to them over 2022 man I just couldn't get into them anymore. Even if I did, it came out December 16 - not a chance in hell I would have had a physical copy in time. The same happened with Svartidaudi. I think the Icelandic sound isn't working for me anymore. I acknowledge they are a good band. Remember, this top 20 is MY top 20 (plus honourable mentions) of things I enjoyed the most. I'm not doing a critical, musical analysis of who can play or write the best - just what I personally listened to and enojoyed the most. Thanks for watching either way.
Someone else commented that it referred to Delirium, so that makes sense too. Therefore "At the Foothills of Deliration" might mean "about to go mad" haha.
Thanks for the list and links in the description, much appreciated!
You're welcome! Glad it helps

Some great stuff in there. Didn't realise Escotrilihum had a new one. I need to get to Perdition Temple as a band. And the Ataraxy was a real "whoops" in this video and I hastily added it to the description honourable mentions, but really should have found it's way in the 20.
Super list. The Black Metal stuff is all new to me but I’m sure Codi is all over it. So much good stuff out this year. Great video sir
Cheers mate!
Excellent and extensive list. Below some releases of interest you may have missed
Bekor Qilish - Throes Of Death From The Dreamed Nihilism
Vorbid - A Swan By The Edge Of Mandala
Miscreance - Convergence
Esoctrilihum - Consecration of the Spiritüs Flesh
Negative Plane - The Pact
Incandescence - Le Cœur De L'Homme
Gaerea - Mirage
SkyThala - Boreal Despair
Inanimate Existence - The Masquerade
Morbikon - Ov Mournful Twilight
Occulsed - Crepitation Of Phlegethon
Haunter - Disincarnate Ails
Predatory Light - Death and the Twilight Hours
Cheers!
Thanks mate! That Incandescence was good, I need to give that another spin. Same with Negative Plane. Have to get that new Occulsed!
Was looking foward to this video, excellent choices Simon! Never got around to Faceless Burial among the swathes of other releases. I'm sure Marc G will forgive you... he'll love to hear your Enchanting thoughts about the album sometime in 2023.
Oh mate you need the Faceless Burial!
Cheers.
Thanks mate, will check out your video list!
Cheers, Cark! Lol. The Blasphematory is 110% a you release. So good. And yeah if you want something a little different check out the Doldrum
The Faceless Burial's cover album is so beautiful !
Quality Seagrave!
Great list Simon. I always enjoy your videos. I need to check out that Jade album. One album i feel flew under the radar this year is from Pharmacist out of japan. Andrew Lee plays guitar on the whole album. It has a Carcass vibe to it.
Yep that Pharmacist was great!
Great stuff, nice to shout out Swartadaupuz cause what he's doing is remarkable - one of my favorite modern era BM releases is by another bands fronted by - 2021 Digerdöden album. Let me paste my favorite albums list - lot of doom there
Messa - "Close"
Trhä - "tálcunnana dëhajma tun dejl bënatsë..."
Eric Wagner - "In The Lonely Light Of Mourning"
Chat Pile - "God's Country
Devil Master -"Ecstasies Of Never Ending Night
Thy Listless Heart - "Pilgrims Of The Path Of No Return"
Agreed with Swartadaupuz, he's releasing excellent material. Trhä are great but hard to get physical copies of!
Dream Unending was my #1.. you won’t be disappointed.
Suggestions:
Jesus Wept “Psychedelic Degeneracy”
Wormlust “The feral wisdom”
Sunrise Patriot Motion “Black Fellflower Stream”
Homeskin “Integument Crystallization”
Qrixkuor “Zoetrope”
Doubtsour “The Endless Shadow of Despicable Power”
I'm stinging to get that Qrixkuor ep!
blasphematory, eskhaton, tzompanti would all make my list too.most everything else i havent heard yet, so alot for me to check out, things not listed i would include= ares kingdom, acid witch, bloodstorm, disma, sacrocurse. hmm, thats all that comes to mind right now. in the realms of more traditional/doom eric wagner's s/t, early moods and savage master need mentioning. i know i'm forgetting a bunch of stuff, but oh well. feel that once i hear more of what ive missed it will have been a monster year, as its already shook out pretty darn good for me. cheers simon. have agreat new year
..
Thanks mate! I forgot about that new Acid Witch. Not really checked in with them since Stoned
You are REALLY awesome, sir! After seeing a handful of your videos I gotta subscribe!!! Its rare to find a guy like you with your knowledge and taste in metal, that isn't a straight up asshole.
Man I appreciate that mate. Thanks for subscribing!
Great number 1 release of 2022 🤘
SUCH a good album!
Ah yes I had heard this earlier in the year! I found it amusing they were on the same label as Arghoslent too lol. They sounded pretty good.
@@ExplosiveAction I have been spinning the hell out of it this year on TH-cam and their Bandcamp page (before it got taken down) and now I finally have some money to get it on Bandcamp, as Viking Music Distribution still has the album on their page.
Ottima lista! E surreale la pronuncia di "Gramaglia" (Cosmic Putrefaction)...in quel modo il suono ricorda davvero il nome di un'oscura band Black Metal :')
10 - Daeth Deamon - Span of Æons
09 - Messa - Closer
08 - Revocation - Netherheaven
07 - Verberis - Adumbration of the Veiled Logos
06 - Panzerfaust - The Suns of Perdition - Chapter III: The Astral Drain
05 - Cult of Luna - The Long Road North
04 - Altars - Ascetic Reflection
03 - Immolation - Acts of God
02 - Aeviterne - The Ailing Facade
01 - Voivod - Synchro Anarchy
Thanks for the list! I need to check out Aviterne
Happy New Year mate. Seen a few on other guys lists but lots you picked I think dig deeper than the usual picks.
HNY to you man. It's been a solid year in the extreme side of things. For you, I'd recommend the Sphinx album in my honourable mentions. That's some fast blackened speed right there!

Great list! Some for me to check out. Listened to a minute of The Nest and that sounds wildly different.
Great Picks... just ordered of the albums you mentioned.
If you haven't checked out I Am The Night - While The Gods Are Sleeping and Pestilent Hex - The Ashen Abhorrence... the Emperor anno 1994 vibes are strong on those two albums. Both are my shared #1 album of 2022...
and
#2 Cosmic Putrefaction
#3 Aaara
#4 Sumerian Tombs - S/T
#5 In Aphelion - Moribound
Cheers for the recommendations and glad you picked up some of my picks!
Some awesome underground diamonds found here. Many many thanks brother
You're welcome!
Excellent review with lots of comparisons. I'm surprised that Goatwhore's "Angel's hung at the gates of Heaven" and Hath's latest (2022) release didn't make your top 20 list. There are lots of new bands on your list that I'll have to check out, though.
Thanks mate. Not a fan of Goathore, though I did hear Hath online and it sounded decent!
Great list man. Thanks for giving me music to check out.
You are very welcome!
Listen to the new Hath and Grand Belial's key albums
Will do!
Great video. Thanks.
I like the way when you say "Jesus Christ! This is awesome album!" or "Oh my god! This is incredible album!" talking about all that obscure, sick, rotten sounds 🤣🤣
Many of the mentioned I don't know/ will check soon.
Some albums worth hearing from this year for me (not necessarily in category "album of the year"):
NEGATIVE PLANE "The Pact"
BLACK DEATH CULT "Diaspora"
MOLTEN CHAINS "Orisons of Vengeance"
DESTROYER 666 "Never Surrender" (even if some of the reviews on MA are negative, for me killer album)
RITUAL DEATH "S/T"
FORLESEN "Black Terrain"
ZOS "The Whole of the Body I Call ZOS"
VOIVOD "Synchro Anarchy"
ASSUMPTION "Hadean Tides"
Cheers!
Jade is really catching my ear. I'll have to pick that up. Thanks.
Fantastic album!
dope list, I really like the channel. Keep it up.
Appreciate that, cheers!
You forgot the best black metal album of the year, next to Negative Plane. The mighty Grand Belial’s Key - Kohanic Charmers.
Not forgot, just not listened to! Always too many things to listen to, sometimes even the bigger name bands get lost in the mix for me.
Thanks for sharing, a lot of new realease to checkout.
You're welcome!
😉Great list🎵🎵🤘🎸👍Happy new year🎸🎵🎉🥳🤘
Cheers and to you too!
Faceless Burial is so epic. Haven't heard the last one, but other releases are so great.
Oh man, their latest is their best. You will love it.
@@ExplosiveAction I will definetly listen to it. They are one of those "love at first listen bands". btw. dunno If you've heard, but check band called Taphos and their release from 2018 Come Ethereal Soberness (If you haven't ofc)
@@vodenapuska4796 Yes! Taphos are great, I have two LPs so far. I think there is more stuff coming.
Great list Simon.
Check out
Rend Them Asunder - Existence to Entrails brutal death metal from Scotland.
Konvent - Call Down the Sun cavernous death doom from Denmark and my #1 album of 2022.
Enjoy your spins Simon
Thanks mate, and cheers for the recommendations.
You need to hear Freedom of Fear and Black Lava and Scaphis, 3 fantastic albums from Australian metal.
Not heard of any of them. What type of metal?
BTW the excellent MORGAL - Nightmare Lord was released in 2021
Oh wow you're right! This is what happens these days with the record pressing plants so backed up, the cd comes out way before the vinyl.
I was going to mention, but you already caught it. That album is awesome! 🤘
Great list! Thanks for sharing. My AOTY 2023 - 'Moon of Foul Magics' by Autonoesis
You are welcome! Not familiar with that band, I'll look into them
Faceless Burial is in my top 3 along with Maul and Undeath.
My damn copy of Maul is still coming from Poland! Been in transit over a month
White Rune, Satanic Warmaster, Black Beast, Kres, Wędrujący wiatr, Immolation, Owls Woods graves, Iku-Turso, Hate Forest, Drudkh...
Some good ones to check out! I've heard some people talk about Iku-Turso.
@@ExplosiveAction look for Red and purple white rune... albums of the year
Hey Simon. I’m really enjoying your videos. Sitting here now listening to an ancient goldie Resurrection “Embalmed Existence” Do you know this one? Four horn salute to you sir.
Thanks mate! Haha yeah, a classic. Hope you are listening to it with the intros!
Wow, some obscure stuff there - ive not heard of any of em lol - im not up to date with new stuff, ive always been old school but i do try and listen to newer stuff when i can
The old school rules but there's plenty of new stuff worth your time!
cool updatesimon i kinda find modern BM kinda dull you need too get into. Old school BM ,but their is some cool BM check out Megalith Grave
Love old school black metal as much as some modern bands! I'll take a look at Megalith Grave
Blackbraid.
Didn't actually hear this one
@@ExplosiveAction If you have a minute check it out.
Nice list! Suprised there was no Immolation, Undeath and Miscreance!?
Haven't heard Miscreance yet, I dig the other two quite a bit but neither made the list.
@@ExplosiveAction The way I see it, Miscreance is mix made of Death, Pestilence and Atheist... And that is enough for me! Immolation album is a masterpiece and i was never an immolation fan, till now. Undeath has that groove.... Excellent! Anyway, wish you all the best in new year and many banger records to add to your collection! Happy New Year to all people around the globe!
I wish you could hear ours! :)
Really cool list. But needs More finnish bm! Check out latest Aegrus EP. I think they have a full lenght coming this year too.
Will do!
Like your channel!
Thanks for watching!
I appreciate that mate! Thanks so much, and I'll look to check out your video too.
🔥🔥🔥
yo simon hope u had a awesome NYE n Xmas :)

Top 3 bands out of Australia, come on Simon 😂
Damn straight!
Australia is so under appreciated when it comes to metal. Great top 3
Gotta do my bit. Amazing albums
How good is moonlight sorcery man
Top shelf!
Where do you buy your albums
All over the place! Physical stores in Sydney, online Australian shops, online international shops, direct from bands often on their Bandcamp.
Ty for replying
LoG - Omens
What is LoG?
@@ExplosiveAction lamb of God
@@ExplosiveAction на мой взгляд это лучший альбом 2022года🇷🇺🤘
@@Admin-vo9nh didn't even know they were a band still! Was never a fan of Lamb of God, but I liked the early Burn the Priest album

OH NO YOU DI'INT!
@@superpunkrotten6650 it was Led Zeppelin
@@ExplosiveAction Anyway, watched and subscribed. Thanks for the answer too.
Yeah lots of Australian bands here but he has a British accent? I noticed that was weird too. Anyways, great list!
Delineation - mental derangement.
Another enjoyable video even though Faceless Burial is the only band I’ve heard of.
Someone else commented that it referred to Delirium, so that makes sense too. Therefore "At the Foothills of Deliration" might mean "about to go mad" haha.
Great selection
Cheers!
