Outbreak Onboard: How fear and disease spread on the Ruby Princess | Four Corners

  • The Ruby Princess cruise ship is the single largest source of COVID-19 infections in Australia.
Owned by the world’s largest cruise company, Carnival Corporation, the Ruby Princess was one of a fleet of cruise ships operating as the pandemic gathered speed. The company was well aware of the risks. Only five weeks earlier its sister ship, the Diamond Princess, created world headlines when its passengers were trapped on board as the virus spread.
On March 19, thousands of its passengers disembarked from the Ruby Princess in Sydney before dispersing around the country and overseas.
Far from protecting people, the release of its passengers triggered a public health emergency.
Four Corners investigates how the Ruby Princess became an incubator for infection, leaving its passengers and staff dangerously exposed.
We also examine the actions of Australian authorities who allowed the ship to dock and the passengers to disembark, taking the virus with them.

I can’t get over the one lady that was a double transplant, still got on the cruise, then wants to blame everyone else and hopes the ship sinks? Come on, you knew what was going on, and still boarded the ship, then started feeling unwell, but refused to go to the doctor, and still didn’t quarantine yourself. Who’s acting stupid now? Then say I will never get on another cruise? Well good, now you won’t infect others with your stupidity!

The passengers knew about the Diamond Princess a month before. Having 700+ infected passengers and 13 deaths should have been a wake up call to all cruisers and yet they went ahead with the trip. These passengers should only blame themselves. I have little sympathy.

In January I was making plans to fly to New Zealand from Canada to visit my son. I was watching the COVID-19 situation closely. It became clear to me that international flights were a bad idea and in late January, I cancelled the trip.
It amazes me, when I hear of people with the same access to the news that I had, chose to travel. True the airlines, cruise companies, travel companies and politicians should carry responsibility for continuing to operate business as usual. But, unless they were blind and deaf, these travelers are equally responsible for their own choices to travel during a public health crisis.
It was a willfully blind decision.

The only way cruising can be relatively safe going forward is everyone on board needs to report to medical every 48 hours for a rapid virus test (assuming the tests can be deemed accurate). A hassle, but those measures with possibly restricting ports of call might be the only safe approach going forward.

However, the rug outside of the room showed significant water damage. After indicating the significant water damage outside of the room, corporate decided to refund our money for the entire cruise. I wouldn't trust Carnival as far as I could through anyone in corporate management.

Personal responsibility is to the person to keep themselves in their cabin. 9:30 by now they have been warned multiple times, and now authorities are on board to test. This is not just the cruise ship's responsibility, it is also the failure of the passengers to heed warnings and use their personal responsibility to limit their exposure to others. A passenger on the Ruby Princess visited a patient in an old person's home. This led to many people getting covid including deaths. This happened even though the ship and individuals had the information needed to make a decision about the safety/risk involved in going on cruise. If I was a transplant patient I wouldn't of taken the risk and I think that comes down to common sense. I am immunosuppressed and therefore at a greater risk and I would not have gone on the cruise for my own safety but also taking into account if I got the virus the potential of spreading it to others.

It's important to remember that most of us didn't know how serious it was at first. While people should have exercised better judgment and that cruising under such conditions was a terrible idea, it's easy to see that with hindsight. Another factor is that when you're paying for a cruise, you expect the cruise company to take care of you and to make decisions that will keep you safe. It's supposed to be an escape where you don't have to worry about anything. When you're in that mindset, it takes a bit for your logical brain to catch up. No one is immune to that.

They are rarely recognized and face some of the most awful working conditions. I felt bad for them -- yes passengers were paying customers, but these employees had little liberty and freedom in expressing their own concerns out of fear of losing their jobs, income which supports whole families back in their native countries. With the pandemic, most people sympathized with the passengers but forgot the crew who had no choice but to continue serving even if they themselves were feeling uncertain and worried. Like with the Diamond Princess, passengers were confined to their rooms with some having no windows and were cramped -- but what about the crew? Even more cramped and faced to serve room to room. That risk of covid-19 exposure and spread too. Those Princess / Carnival Cruise Ships top honchos do not sincerely care about its passengers' welfare let alone their employees.

I personally know crew members of the ruby and they were treated so well during and after passengers got off... they did all they could for the passengers aswel, ..... they got to go home after 90 days in their little cabins .... I took senior tour mananger rex and 3 friends on a wee avo out when they were in port otago on their last visit 2 weeks out of lock down.... I followed their journey and saw how amazing the cruise line treated them. Cant wait for princess cruises to come back. Miss doing tour dispatch.

We were in Club Class so we weren't eating at the buffet with the plebs. That made us feel safe but we were definitely worried about the lower classes revolting. It's safe to say we were happy to get back to Vaucluse.

Please be aware that cruise lines have extremely harsh cancellation policies. Imagine paying thousands of dollars and then having to write it entirely off because of a virus happening "somewhere else."
I get that hindsight is 20/20, but at this point COVID seemed more like the exception than the rule. Sadly, that turned out not to be the case.

BAD NEWS CRUISE - Over the last 10-15 years, I've heard so many negative things about cruise ships, from dumping violations to the vagaries of sailing in international waters, where enforcement of law does not apply, b/c no specific nation governs the ship while it's at sea. I am 55 and if I have access to this kind of information, people with more resources than myself surely do. I don't understand how people my age can be so ignorant of the fact that ships sail under no law and free of most legal obligations associated with statehood (in the developed world, anyway).

    • @StreakyBaconMan
      @StreakyBaconMan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

All cruise ships must operate under the laws of the country they operate from. They aren't suddenly immune to laws because the are in international waters, that is a myth.

About the lady that asked someone dressed in white , a staff member from her ship that she was waiting to board how safe would she be .The staff probably were under strict instructions on what to say if asked those type of questions, and they would know that if they said any gossip that was going around amongst themselves the staff , that it would come back to them and they would be in trouble ,so they probably believed they were safe too.

Yes....cruise lines are also culpable for sailing as if nothing was happening.
But there wouldn't be any sails after Dianond Princess if people did not step through the gangway.

I was in South America when the virus started spreading. We were all joking about it. I was on the phone to family when my country went into lockdown and that's when I started to worry. A few days later I booked a flight home and was still told I was overreacting. The day after prices suddenly went through the roof as more countries started closing their borders. Overall my journey home was relatively smooth, except for a problem with my connecting flight. A lot of people who told me I was overreacting really struggled to get home later. That's certainly taught me to trust my gut feeling.

Life Lesson: You DO NOT EVER trust a company or organization that will only profit if it ignores your health and safety. Furthermore, the fact that an international business is headquartered in a country that allows it to dodge taxes and regulation is primary evidence showing it DOES NOT CARE about anything but getting your money.

The majority of Americans are not wealthy - AT ALL, but working class - living as they say "one paycheck away from poverty," meaning if they lost their source of income, they'd have zero
or very little savings for a rainy day and that the following month could lead to homelessness.
CHEAP CRUISES IN THE US: If you live US, you can find a cruise for very little even if you're working class, making say $10 per hour working full time. (For example, the average total cost of a 7-night Caribbean cruise per person ranges between $1500 and $2000, while the same cruise to Alaska may shift that whole price range up $500). *kw search - cost low level cruises.

I am personally sorry for the cruisers who got sick, and even more to the the. people who died and their families. carnival screwed up. There is no doubt about that.
However, there is some personal responsibility besides what Carnival did or didn’t do. I tend to act on the side of caution when it comes to mortality. Most people knew that this deadly virus was already considered an epidemic. Epidemics can be reclassified. If the virus is spread to one sick person who travels out of their country, or has had exposure to it and not know they contracted it. Cruise ships and airplanes are petri dishes, and germs spread fast amount the passengers, especially when 2000 people are confined to one vehicle for a number of days. My choice deciding whether to board the during a pandemic or epidemic would be to stay home. I know it is a real bummer: disappointing, and financially a problem, but I would rather be disappointed than dead. Terry, there is no need to apologize. None of this is your fault.

And to this day I watch people dining and drinking in groups an not wearing masks. To board the Ruby and think they are safe from this virus or any virus is just mind blowing to me

Covid19 has been a learning process and I trully see nothing else the cruise stuff could have done differently given the time line. This affected both the passengers and cruise stuff..... and gave the rest of the world a sense of urgency to the Coronas deadly effect. My own Trans- Atantic cruise, schedule for April on Norwegian, was cancelled at the end of March. It was embarking from New York and THAT was a more concernirá thought for me, not the cruise. Will happily support the industry again and be so much mroe grateful o the amazing stuff!

I love how the Hong Kong port agent said: 'we sent an email to the ship ... I'm not sure if we could have done much more'. No one uses email for anything important/urgent (firstly it's not at all secure, and secondly it does not guarantee delivery) - call on the phone dammit! There is zero reason why any organization should be using email for any part of an important business process! I believe the Ruby Princess also involved email screw-ups, and also since then with other SARS-2 communication between states. Stop using 50-year-old obsolete email technology!
