Accepting free or discounted accessories is a slippery slope that can challenge your credibility. As a viewer, I appreciate that you identify when a manufacturer sends you stuff or discounts it. In some of your earlier videos I seem to remember that you pointed out that you bought everything that you reviewed (I could easily be mistaken).
Agree, I’ve yet to see any professional reviewer resist the advances of suppliers. Ian used to proudly announce that he paid for everything upfront. At least he is explaining why he has bits and pieces. But what do you do if these parts “just” turn up? Send them back? If it was me and planning on using a particular part anyway, I would pay for it immediately, use it then make an informed comment. If not, send it straight back.

actually I cannot understand why so many people use double take mirrors, other than they are folding. Although it is a great company with great customer service, the product isn't all that good IMO. Besides what someone else mentioned before about itchy boots' mirror, I had a mirror flying when riding a dirt road: with a bump the aluminum base broke and the entire mirror from the ram base-ball went in the air. That was the second mirror I broke with normal (adv) use.

As far as the mod lists, Perun moto's stuff is just plain gorgeous, I bought Perun's stuff for this bike before I even got my hands on mine! I know you mentioned it to but well said on supporting local mom-pop shops (the same goes for training! support good instructors too). As more OEM's are getting into the ADV bike segment, the need for quality protection and accessories goes up by that much as well. Keep up the content!
I ride almost exclusively in the dirt and just happened to mount up the same tire combination. So far the rear is excellent. Great traction and pretty quite on the road. The front I like but not sure I love. Only used it for about 150 miles so but several times in slippery conditions it went from what felt like good traction to letting go...no in-between. It has never caused me to crash (not even close), but I wish I could feel it starting to go a little earlier. Also I dropped the front sprocket 1 tooth and I highly recommend that for anyone who offroads this bike. I lost about 4mph for the same rpm's at highway speed (whish is not noticeable), but greatly improved the ability to get thru tough stuff when you need to.
When will you post a detailed video (in classic BRM fashion) of all of the Norden 901's foibles & things that have broken already? On paper, the N901 seems great, but I'm very hesitant due to KTM's "reliability."
Hello Ian, first, I get from your videos you don’t really keep your motorcycles for very long. Do you really intend to hold on to this bike for a full year? I do understand you need to review multiple bikes for your channel, but realistically how many miles / hours would you expect to do for a real world assessment of this bike’s reliability going beyond the honeymoon phase? There are so many entries into this middleweight category that it’s becoming very difficult to select a platform without being distracted by the newest shiny object.
Agree with the Aussie made barkbusters ( a bit of trivia Australian enduro riders invented hand guards . Side stand I use a hockey puck . Also in Australia we do a fantastic bash plate it’s called B&B , they do other stuff as well like rear racks . And Safari tanks ate Australian as well . And Force products they do bash plates and other accessories as well .
Great video Ian and I am in total agreement about not buying very expensive add on's that just are not necessary. Perun is from Serbia and I have one also and it is amazing. Your modifications very much mirror my own. Very interested in following your choice of tire and its longevity. My first adventure bike since my 32 year rest from motorcycling. Awesome job.
Are any crash bars available yet for this bike? I keep referring to Husky’s concept bike and wish that exact setup were available (top and bottom coverage). I love how it worked with the lines of the bike so well. Hopefully in due time. That’s the frustration with getting such a new bike though isn’t it, waiting for the aftermarket parts to arrive and further, vetted by others that have tried them.
Saw that you sold this bike a few weeks ago. Was looking forward to see how you resolved some of the quirks you mentioned, especially the wind noise issue. I was under the impression you really liked this bike and it was going to be a long term relationship. I do know that you were going to have to have the shock replaced under warranty. Please come back and give us some final thoughts.
Very useful, sensible and helpful review. is a good bike for commuting honestly? daily use (comfortable) and weekend touring, of perhaps recreation purpose? this is better than ktm 890 for my purpose ? I only drive on public roads/highways... it is wise to jump from naked bike to this touring/Adventure for daily use. Any way great video Be safe & God bless
I’m getting close to putting a deposit down on a Norden thanks to your videos. That Perun tail rack doesn’t seem to protrude in a way that would catch a leg or object like so many racks...which always scares me based on experience. Is it close to flush with the seat departure angle? Also what’s your justification for a rack system vs a soft saddlebag setup like GL Coyote? Safety or convenience? Either way, I’m off to ride in Europe on a GS and maybe by late summer I’ll return to a new Norden or 890.
Hi Ian, think all the mod's so far are very good, and as you say crash bars next, and I was with you about those mirrors being indestructible, but on yesterdays latest episode of Itchy Boots she managed to break the LH mirror with a simple side stand topple over in the wind, I think it hit a kerb stone, so not as robust as we are led to believe. Changing the subject slightly when KTM took over Husqvarna I thought they had gone mad with the bikes being in direct competition, but it's working out well for them, and I do prefer the Norden to the 890 Duke R which the Norden is based upon. enjoyed the video, thank you...
I think the point of the double take mirrors is that they fold on impact instead of twisting the base threads and wrecking the whole mirror post. Doesn't prevent the mirror glass from breaking (easy fix), but does protect these threads. That's my guess anyway.
@@stephenpotts8170 Oh sorry, I didn't see the video yet. That sucks. I've seen a ton of topples with these mirrors without damage, but I guess nothing is truly indestructible. Mitigation seems pretty good to me, though.
After watching that video I noticed that the RAM mount ball joint is still in there and intact, so while the mirror housing itself broke due to the fall, the base of the mirror and its threads still seem intact (the mirror hardware, if you prefer). This would be more of a pain to replace than the mirror itself, in my opinion? Also a potential for applying more force to the bars because metal doesn't yield as well as plastics. Anyway, still a pain when it breaks!

Hello Ian. Nice video and setup for the Norden. I think you can mount aux lights on this bike without adding crashbars, using the lower triple clamp, where there are some threaded holes intented for the hifender that 790/890 R are using. I am considering a small (about 6 inch) lightbar on my 790R (that have a low fender).
I don’t think her issue is typical outcome for the Double Take mirrors. My Double Take mirrors have taken a lot of abuse. Maybe overtightened RAM mount did not allow the mirror to rotate?
Tusk gear in my experience and opinion is the very best bang for the buck out there , and from all the others ive shopped by a LONG shot ~!! that Mosko & Giant loop stuff sure is good looking and im sure has better fit and finish probably but at literally tripple or 4 times the cost ?? yikes

Good to know about Tusk soft luggage. I had Tusk hard panniers on my 95 R 1100 GS. I liked them, some. I just didn’t like weight and idea of having my legs caught under them in the Rocky Mountains. And I didn’t mount them detachable. They were bolted on. This was about 10 years ago, so I don’t think there was a detachable mount back then. I really enjoy your videos. I’m tempted to buy a Norden now. ✌🏻
Has anyone installed LED turn signals on the 901 Norden? If so did you replace the relay so they would work or something else? If so where is the relay located or what did you do. Mine stay solid and dont flash. No owners manual yet, no ETA from my dealer. Any help is appreciated.

I'm am also using the Mitas tires on my 1190R. They are the best i have ever used. They are bit more skitly then f.e. the Continental Road Attack on the tarmac. But when going away from the tarmac they are great. Maybe somewhere around 60/40 or 50/50. When it is whet you need to adjust in the corners. But when you go on a few weeks vacation they are the best tires because they give a lot of confidence. Ian, at the right inside of this rack. Is there room for a one gallon Rotopax ? Still deciding between yours or those from Hepco. Have some brandnew Explorer cases. Maybe will use the Kriega Overlander Softluggage System. They are also very good softcases. But it happened to me before on vacation that someone was trying to streal my stuff while i was in a supermarket. Also one time i was eating at a restaurant in Hungary. I was sitting outside. Only a few meters from my bike. There were some branches used as a border. The two guys probably thought that the owner of the bike was somewhere walking in the centre of the city. More then 30 people were sitting outside and nobody sad just one thing. But i am sure that a lot of folkes had a much better view at this happening then i did. Luckely i became aware of it just in time. But the damage to my Ortlieb was already done with a sharp knife. I was sure that if they would have sticked me with it that nobody sitting at that place would have cared. Just minding their own bussiness. In the years through these experiences i became aware that when you ride alone that you always have to think that you are alone. Even in a crowded place. And that you have to act accordingly to that. And that when also going to innercities in Hungary, Romenia, Bulgaria and so on it is better to have strong lockeble alu cases instead of softluggage. It is impossible to have a view at your bike all the time. I hate to bring a strong chain lock due to the weight. But in those countries they ride up next to your bike with a van. Two or three guys jump out with some pipes. Stick them through your bike and carry it within second into the van. Your bike is gone within 60 seconds. They also use two special made dollies with wheels that go under the tires. And push a bike within seconds to the back of the van. Load it in and you will never see it again. This is a real problem with new and shiny bikes. They can easily get 5000 euros for a 18000.00 euro bike. So it is easily made money for them in just one or two hours. Including the drive with the van. The actual deed is only 60 till 100 second before the can drive away. So it is always important to attach your bike to something solid. Although nowadays with a battery powered grinder even the strongest chain is cut within a few minutes. Or maybe even less. And in countries where people mind their own bussiness they can take it relatively slow. And also in countries like Sweden and Norway this is becoming more normal. Until 10 years ago these were "safe" countries. I wish that some material would be developed that could not be broken or cut instead of an expensive chain with so much stars that in reality almost does not make any difference compared to a chain from Chinese steel. Nothing against China before i am called a racist. In Europe and Canada we are also heading towards a social crediting system that will be much worse then that of China. Hopefully soon there will be a breaktrough with an electric battery that can give juice enough for 600 or 1000 km'ters with a bike. So that in a few years we can still drive motorcycles. Because petrol will become hard to get by in a few years in Europe. And you probably need to pay atleast 20 euro for just one liter. And also pay extra climate-tax because every purchase data will be shared with our governments due to the system they are rolling out with the Digital European Passport. Starting from the first of june.😪 Afraid that in a few years all adventure motorcycling is in the past and will not come back again. Maybe not in the USA but definitly in countries like Europe, the UK and Canada. Maybe i could better sell my bikes and buy a Quadski. So when i need i can escape by riding into the Nordsea.🙈 Ian, could you also give us some good reviews about these upcoming Quadski's. To me they look as a lot of fun. In time they probably will create a motorcycle version. A visualisation at the back of my eyes. Riding to Sweden as a motorcycle. And from time to time ride into a beautifull and large lake. And then head on through the water. Or maybe in Norway in a fjörd. So we can also do some fishing. Captering our evening food. An electric bike that also can go into the water. Instead of you reviewing some aftermarket exhaust you are reviewing floating solarpanels that we can throw overboard and that these can power our jetski engine. How great this would be that we could ride it as a motorcycle on the road and offroad. And also use it as a jetski in the water. The upcoming Quadski can do all of this. And it is not expensive. Somewhere around 40000.00 US dollars. You can litterly go everywhere. The current topspeed is only 45 mph. This will change in time.

Can’t believe that bike manufacturers throw on such crap screens. It’s such a fundamentally important issue for increased comfort and reduced fatigue yet we are left to our own devices. This bikes headlight design will create problems for incorporating suitable cutouts in replacement screens. If I was looking at an ADV twin I wouldn’t buy this bike unless I was convinced a decent aftermarket solution was available.

My very first bike which I owned and did my motorbike driving license with was R1250 GSA (2020). In one year I did 22kkm regardless of the weather conditions which we do have in Europe. Bike was sold because we moved out for some period of time to Costa Rica. I am just about to get new machine and I was 100% convinced to get again R1250GSA but need to say yours presentations about 901 couse some turbulances :-). I need new bike in Switzerland where many times I am going for long and fast trips on German motorways. I understands issue with front windshield hasn't been properly addressed by Husqvarna still. Can you imagine someone who is 189cm in heigh traveling 8h with speed 150-170kmh? If this Husqvarna is really so good do you still come any close to your GSA? I do love as well do off road trips and with big and heavy GSA this was challenging but possible. When I see how you swing this 901 from left to right by standing and comparing this to GSA... 🤣. Givi crash bars for the KTM 890 Adventure fit perfectly, zero install issue. I have them installed on my Norden. Unfortunately after i laid it down and banged up the factory side protection. Arrow exhaust sounds unbelievable for those of you that like more noise. Purchased at Rottweiler

Agreed on Black Dog Cycle Works stuff. I have the pegs and skid plates on both my 890 and GSA. One thing to mention is that the lower position of the peg on the 890 actually makes my boot contact the kickstand when standing. Not enough to cause a problem-yet, just enough to notice. Also, thanks for the feedback on your heated grips of choice. I ordered the KTM ones in Oct of ‘21. They are now telling me they’re back ordered until December ‘22. Ridiculous. Hi Ian, I’ve been looking at the tusk panniers for my GS but they don’t seem to have a mixed set (larger pannier for the left, smaller pannier for the right) option. However, yours look like they are. Is that an optical illusion, or the shrooms I ate for breakfast?

The more I see the 901, the more I appreciate the look. Now running the new 1290 adv R , my brother may be getting the 880 R. Only thing I don’t care for after the double take mirrors. My experience with them is that they are junk. I use the ktm folding mirrors now my double take would not tighten to stay secure and vibrate way too much on my GSA. Ultimately snapping from heat expansion . Are all the ktm heated grips the same interchangeable? I put them on both ktm now. Plug and play, super clean. Mosko was my last set, when I sold my 19 1290 the new owner purchase them as an extra on the bike, I went to price out another model from Mosko and the price increase Was just too much now. I ended up ordering the zega evo for nearly the same cost as the soft bags they offer which is outrageous for soft bags. Looking at the Tusk pilots as an off-road set
Does the switch for the heated grips impede using the normal controls? It looks like it goes to the left of them making your hand have to move that much further out and have asymmetrical grips. Any issues with this setup? The Honda ones are the same as well.
Sorry to hear about the blown shock. Was really looking forward to your ongoing Norden opinions and reviews. Hoping that we will at least hear about the dealer/manufacturers response through to fixing/replacing.
Ian, I take some issue with those cheap air pressure monitors. Normally the tire valve seals and a quality cap will provide back up sealing with an O-ring at the top. For these screw on monitors to work, they have to push down the tire valve pin defeating that seal. Thus, the only seal left is the monitor. And with so many of those being cheap Chinese crap, I can't imagine them being worth while. A proper TPMS system leaves the redudent sealing system.

Husky seems to have a lot of extra cost add Ins that should be on the bike in the first place.

I think the point of the double take mirrors is that they fold on impact instead of twisting the base threads and wrecking the whole mirror post. Doesn't prevent the mirror glass from breaking (easy fix), but does protect these threads. That's my guess anyway.
@@ApocalypseNouille The one on the Itchy Boots video the complete mirror and it's housing sheared off, the glass was still intact.
@@stephenpotts8170 Oh sorry, I didn't see the video yet. That sucks. I've seen a ton of topples with these mirrors without damage, but I guess nothing is truly indestructible. Mitigation seems pretty good to me, though.
After watching that video I noticed that the RAM mount ball joint is still in there and intact, so while the mirror housing itself broke due to the fall, the base of the mirror and its threads still seem intact (the mirror hardware, if you prefer). This would be more of a pain to replace than the mirror itself, in my opinion? Also a potential for applying more force to the bars because metal doesn't yield as well as plastics. Anyway, still a pain when it breaks!

Hello Ian. Nice video and setup for the Norden. I think you can mount aux lights on this bike without adding crashbars, using the lower triple clamp, where there are some threaded holes intented for the hifender that 790/890 R are using. I am considering a small (about 6 inch) lightbar on my 790R (that have a low fender).
Itchy boots just broke her double take mirrors, normal mirros would have taken the hit better since they rotate out of the way.
How? Do even know how double take mirrors work?

I don’t think her issue is typical outcome for the Double Take mirrors. My Double Take mirrors have taken a lot of abuse. Maybe overtightened RAM mount did not allow the mirror to rotate?

Tusk gear in my experience and opinion is the very best bang for the buck out there , and from all the others ive shopped by a LONG shot ~!! that Mosko & Giant loop stuff sure is good looking and im sure has better fit and finish probably but at literally tripple or 4 times the cost ?? yikes

Good to know about Tusk soft luggage. I had Tusk hard panniers on my 95 R 1100 GS. I liked them, some. I just didn’t like weight and idea of having my legs caught under them in the Rocky Mountains. And I didn’t mount them detachable. They were bolted on. This was about 10 years ago, so I don’t think there was a detachable mount back then. I really enjoy your videos. I’m tempted to buy a Norden now. ✌🏻
Has anyone installed LED turn signals on the 901 Norden? If so did you replace the relay so they would work or something else? If so where is the relay located or what did you do. Mine stay solid and dont flash. No owners manual yet, no ETA from my dealer. Any help is appreciated.

I'm am also using the Mitas tires on my 1190R. They are the best i have ever used. They are bit more skitly then f.e. the Continental Road Attack on the tarmac. But when going away from the tarmac they are great. Maybe somewhere around 60/40 or 50/50.
When it is whet you need to adjust in the corners. But when you go on a few weeks vacation they are the best tires because they give a lot of confidence.
Ian, at the right inside of this rack. Is there room for a one gallon Rotopax ? Still deciding between yours or those from Hepco.
Have some brandnew Explorer cases. Maybe will use the Kriega Overlander Softluggage System. They are also very good softcases.
But it happened to me before on vacation that someone was trying to streal my stuff while i was in a supermarket. Also one time i was eating at a restaurant in Hungary. I was sitting outside. Only a few meters from my bike. There were some branches used as a border. The two guys probably thought that the owner of the bike was somewhere walking in the centre of the city. More then 30 people were sitting outside and nobody sad just one thing. But i am sure that a lot of folkes had a much better view at this happening then i did. Luckely i became aware of it just in time. But the damage to my Ortlieb was already done with a sharp knife. I was sure that if they would have sticked me with it that nobody sitting at that place would have cared. Just minding their own bussiness.
In the years through these experiences i became aware that when you ride alone that you always have to think that you are alone. Even in a crowded place. And that you have to act accordingly to that. And that when also going to innercities in Hungary, Romenia, Bulgaria and so on it is better to have strong lockeble alu cases instead of softluggage. It is impossible to have a view at your bike all the time. I hate to bring a strong chain lock due to the weight. But in those countries they ride up next to your bike with a van. Two or three guys jump out with some pipes. Stick them through your bike and carry it within second into the van. Your bike is gone within 60 seconds. They also use two special made dollies with wheels that go under the tires. And push a bike within seconds to the back of the van. Load it in and you will never see it again. This is a real problem with new and shiny bikes. They can easily get 5000 euros for a 18000.00 euro bike. So it is easily made money for them in just one or two hours. Including the drive with the van. The actual deed is only 60 till 100 second before the can drive away. So it is always important to attach your bike to something solid. Although nowadays with a battery powered grinder even the strongest chain is cut within a few minutes. Or maybe even less. And in countries where people mind their own bussiness they can take it relatively slow. And also in countries like Sweden and Norway this is becoming more normal. Until 10 years ago these were "safe" countries. I wish that some material would be developed that could not be broken or cut instead of an expensive chain with so much stars that in reality almost does not make any difference compared to a chain from Chinese steel. Nothing against China before i am called a racist. In Europe and Canada we are also heading towards a social crediting system that will be much worse then that of China. Hopefully soon there will be a breaktrough with an electric battery that can give juice enough for 600 or 1000 km'ters with a bike. So that in a few years we can still drive motorcycles. Because petrol will become hard to get by in a few years in Europe. And you probably need to pay atleast 20 euro for just one liter. And also pay extra climate-tax because every purchase data will be shared with our governments due to the system they are rolling out with the Digital European Passport. Starting from the first of june.😪 Afraid that in a few years all adventure motorcycling is in the past and will not come back again. Maybe not in the USA but definitly in countries like Europe, the UK and Canada.
Maybe i could better sell my bikes and buy a Quadski. So when i need i can escape by riding into the Nordsea.🙈

In time they probably will create a motorcycle version. A visualisation at the back of my eyes. Riding to Sweden as a motorcycle. And from time to time ride into a beautifull and large lake. And then head on through the water. Or maybe in Norway in a fjörd. So we can also do some fishing. Captering our evening food. An electric bike that also can go into the water. Instead of you reviewing some aftermarket exhaust you are reviewing floating solarpanels that we can throw overboard and that these can power our jetski engine. How great this would be that we could ride it as a motorcycle on the road and offroad. And also use it as a jetski in the water. The upcoming Quadski can do all of this. And it is not expensive. Somewhere around 40000.00 US dollars. You can litterly go everywhere. The current topspeed is only 45 mph. This will change in time.

Can’t believe that bike manufacturers throw on such crap screens. It’s such a fundamentally important issue for increased comfort and reduced fatigue yet we are left to our own devices. This bikes headlight design will create problems for incorporating suitable cutouts in replacement screens. If I was looking at an ADV twin I wouldn’t buy this bike unless I was convinced a decent aftermarket solution was available.

My very first bike which I owned and did my motorbike driving license with was R1250 GSA (2020). In one year I did 22kkm regardless of the weather conditions which we do have in Europe. Bike was sold because we moved out for some period of time to Costa Rica. I am just about to get new machine and I was 100% convinced to get again R1250GSA but need to say yours presentations about 901 couse some turbulances :-). I need new bike in Switzerland where many times I am going for long and fast trips on German motorways. I understands issue with front windshield hasn't been properly addressed by Husqvarna still. Can you imagine someone who is 189cm in heigh traveling 8h with speed 150-170kmh? If this Husqvarna is really so good do you still come any close to your GSA? I do love as well do off road trips and with big and heavy GSA this was challenging but possible. When I see how you swing this 901 from left to right by standing and comparing this to GSA... 🤣. Givi crash bars for the KTM 890 Adventure fit perfectly, zero install issue. I have them installed on my Norden. Unfortunately after i laid it down and banged up the factory side protection. Arrow exhaust sounds unbelievable for those of you that like more noise. Purchased at Rottweiler

Agreed on Black Dog Cycle Works stuff. I have the pegs and skid plates on both my 890 and GSA. One thing to mention is that the lower position of the peg on the 890 actually makes my boot contact the kickstand when standing. Not enough to cause a problem-yet, just enough to notice. Also, thanks for the feedback on your heated grips of choice. I ordered the KTM ones in Oct of ‘21. They are now telling me they’re back ordered until December ‘22. Ridiculous. Thanks and keep up the great work!

The more I see the 901, the more I appreciate the look. Now running the new 1290 adv R , my brother may be getting the 880 R.
Only thing I don’t care for after the double take mirrors. My experience with them is that they are junk. I use the ktm folding mirrors now my double take would not tighten to stay secure and vibrate way too much on my GSA. Ultimately snapping from heat expansion .
Are all the ktm heated grips the same interchangeable? I put them on both ktm now. Plug and play, super clean.
Mosko was my last set, when I sold my 19 1290 the new owner purchase them as an extra on the bike, I went to price out another model from Mosko and the price increase Was just too much now. I ended up ordering the zega evo for nearly the same cost as the soft bags they offer which is outrageous for soft bags. Looking at the Tusk pilots as an off-road set

Does the switch for the heated grips impede using the normal controls? It looks like it goes to the left of them making your hand have to move that much further out and have asymmetrical grips. Any issues with this setup? The Honda ones are the same as well.

Ian, I take some issue with those cheap air pressure monitors. Normally the tire valve seals and a quality cap will provide back up sealing with an O-ring at the top.
For these screw on monitors to work, they have to push down the tire valve pin defeating that seal. Thus, the only seal left is the monitor. And with so many of those being cheap Chinese crap, I can't imagine them being worth while. A proper TPMS system leaves the redudent sealing system.
