He won't be, but the joy of the 890 Rally probably makes up for it. I feel similar about my 890 ADV R. Horrendous CS from KTM corporate, but a few small issues, but the joy of riding the bike off sealed roads outweighs it.
Yes watched the video. He’s not happy with the customer service. The fact that he’s willing to put up with possible reliability issues means he’s probably going to be let down again. Not knocking Ian at all, best adventure bike channel in the world hands down.
You comment seems to have attracted some rather negative comments, like Ian is inconsistent and being paid off. It was those I was more annoyed with. I agree love his channel.
The weak link on the Norden is the rear shock. It was way underspeced for that bike. The front suspension is actually quite good. I solved the shock problem by replacing the stock shock with an 890 Adventure R shock. I bought that shock brand new for around $1300 and applied a KTM lowering kit to it. That lowered the rear of the Norden by 1/2 inch. To compensate, I raised the fork tubes 1/2" in the triple clamps. Whalaah!!! Shock problem gone due to upgrade and bike is lowered 1/2" which is good for my 30" inseam.
I'm doing the same swap and springs and revalving the forks. The KTM is an insect and the Norden a thing of beauty so its worth it to me. Love the Norden, except the damn rear spring, oh, and the windscreen would be better without one, but other than that, bingo!
@@BigRockMoto Not lowering it though, as I find it to be the height perfect. And I need the clearance riding on washed-out rocky jeep trails in the Colorado Rockies. I've brought this stock Norden places I would never bring my Africa Twin, with the new suspension it should go places where my buddies 690's go, well 95% or so, with a few drops maybe. But still, no comparison to the AT in the rough tough rocky stuff. Rode the T7 2600 miles around NE USA and SE Canada, it's a price point bike, a cheap little AT IMHO. The engine is brilliant but that's about it. Can't compare to the 890/Norden/AT. I don't think the AT compares well to the Norden, it's too big and topsy turvy.
This is what I've been searching Ian's amazing videos for. Actually the only problem I have seen with the norden, followed by a solution. Thanks for sharing.
Wind buffeting is a huge factor. My VStrom buffeted so badly in the middle of a two week trip, I tossed the windscreen in a bin of a parking lot. Pulled off of HWY 1 in CA into Pfeiffer park took it off and put it in the closest trash bin I could find. I never did put another on. Another great vlog, and useful. I was considering this bike, and now I understand it's not for me. I've got at least ten years on you, maybe 15, and my days of bombing around in the dirt are over. I like to putt-putt on dirt roads and good dual track. I don't camp anymore either, at my age everything hurts too badly sleeping on the ground. Not yet ready to leave the ADV life, just not that high level of dirt anymore. Thanks
I'm there with you. I think the Norden fits the bill for me. Not really interested in doing high-speed runs off-road. Injuries take longer to heal too! :) I'm pushing 60 and I'm now satisfied with doing short runs, touring and exploring off-road rather than trying to get through it as quickly as possible. :)
For the record, my 790R's rear shock failed (lost all fluid, became a pogo stick) at 1,600 miles. Under KTM's instructions, my town's local KTM dealer rebuilt my motorcycle's shock. 1,000 miles later, it is still good. But I'm always wondering...
I waited 4 months for a replacement triple tree to come in under warranty from KTM. Ended up selling the bike because that useful warranty was a few months from being up. Loved the bike, 890R Duke, hated dealing with the dealership or KTM.
@@freebehindbars8654 Truth.... People do not realize how important a good dealership is when owning a bike when things go wrong.... or at least more than one in your State/ area. Part of the reason Harley Davidson is so successful in the USA, the dealerships are everywhere and if one is bad just go to the other .... A lot of the Japanese brands have horrible corporate type Jet Ski / quad setups where the people do not know much about motorcycles......
I used to go to a small local KTM dealership. They where mostly off-road enduro oriented and where the kind of shop that let you watch the mechanic work on your bike, give some diy advise and knew what bike you ride by saying your name on the phone. To bad KTM got bigger and bigger and demanded big stock and demo bike standards.for their dealerships which they could not meet. Now the KTM dealerships are the big anonymous dealerships selling all kinds of big brands and only interested in selling more and more.
@@DB-me3jt True ! I worked as a mechanic ( Now called Tech..lol. ) at a Mom and Pop Harley dealership in the 90's and Harley forced them out of business by requiring them to build one of those huge Mc Dealerships.. When the economy tanked they went out of business after being a Harley / Suzuki and originally Triumph dealer since after WW2 ! Very sad as they were very involved in riding racing and the community.... And the customers were allowed to watch us work ! lol...
Important advise for 790/890 RALLY Owners. This Pro suspension comes with road settings and I've seen a lot off owners riding it offroad without tuning the clicks correctly for offroad. Also springs are for heavy riders. You can have the best suspension in the world but if you don´t do correct settings yo have nothing. I'm totally in love with mine.
@@paoloc3318 ktm changed me a motor under warranty. A problem in factory assembling but as I far as I know, not a recurrent problem with that. That was a big one but they give me a substitution bike for that month. Other than that, just small things solved during normal maintenance.
Ian, now that it's out, it would be interesting to see your take on the Norden 901 Expedition... Still not as dirt focused as the 890 Rally but all the upgrades you wanted for way less than your $7K suspension quote.
Hi Ian, great series on the Norden. Big fan of all your videos. Does the arrival of the Norden Expedition change anything? Curious to hear your opinion as someone who had owned/tested pretty much everything out there.
Thank you for the vid... You touched on a key factor when making a decision and that is compromise. Something so many people, including myself don't consider enough. Your willingness to put up with the negatives, in terms of dealer attitude and support, for the positives of sheer riding bliss means ultimately you get a lot more from the riding experience. Your decisions are weighted towards the 90% of the time it does right. Rather than the 10% of the time it doesn't. Life lessons in a Motorcycle Vlog :-)
My 2019 790R has over 23,000 miles now and has been problem free. It is an absolute blast to ride and amazes me every time it tackles gnarly stuff with ease. I did add the Camel ADV rear shock protector and highly recommend it. Cheap insurance against heat damage. Cheers
I’m still enjoying my 790 r. I usually don’t buy the same bike or model twice but decided months ago that I would sell my 790 r for an 890 rally because it’s been the best bike I’ve owned so far and the upgrades in the rally would take it to the next level. In my mind, no other mid-weight bike compares and I have considered others. It’s also been rock solid reliable for me and I mostly ride off-road.
he explained exactly why and even repeated the exact simple reason why a few times ""PERFORMANCE""!!! the ktm890husky901 pkg is simply the absolute hands down best performing adventure bike set up made today and by a margin esp off road !! he has resources , connections and money both and found a "Rally" bike for sale , the only few ive seen for sale were at or north of $25k usd and by the time i saw the add already sold even at that $ !! i am building the 901 instead
I can't see the sense in it. You were let down badly by KTM, so you've bought another KTM? I've got a KTM at the moment, and the dealer and KTM support has been so bad I'll never spend another penny with any business related to KTM. KTM washed their hands of any issues, stating that their dealerships are 'independent' and nothing to do with them. Strange that you got your warranty issue resolved on a big public platform, the rest of us get told to get lost.
The problem is, it's such a great bike to ride. Same with the old 690s and 950/990. Despite all of the 'issues' on the 790/890 platform only the immobiliser issue if it crops up is a show stopper that could leave you stranded. I would agree with not giving KTM any money until they show better customer care, but then you are depriving yourself of one of the best, most fun bikes on the market in its segment.
@@defylifeadventure I've had zero reliability issues, other than when I went to collect my bike from the dealership. Who had broken the headlight plastic and gave me the bike back with the clutch cable far too tight and for a clincher, a completely dead battery. When I complained, I was physically threatened by some employees and had to leave with a dead bike and in fear of a beating. Hardly quality service! KTM washed their hands of it, not their problem, dealers are independent magically and KTM are happy to use them (oh, and this has happened to others at the same dealership, as I found out after the event) So, call me cynical, but KTM can get lost. When my wee 390 adventure needs anything, I'll sell it and never touch KTM again. Great bikes. Worst company I've dealt with in over 40 years owning bikes
I had a 790 advR and my dealer called me to tell me they got an 890 Rally in and gave me first dibs on it. The 890 motor is such a leap of performance over the 790 with its heavier flywheel that resists stalling. The Rally kit is premium and you do notice the big hit performance over the stock suspension. I’ve taken my rally out on mini MX tracks and had a blast riding it like a EXC. I did swap my rally seat for the lower SeatConcepts seat. The orange thread and carbon look really pops on the Rally
you are right that was a better move resale value wise for sure and for you the better solution , i intend to keep mine and mile it out so i went the other way and built the 901 , Tractive Extreme suspension at both ends for half the cost of the WP-pro , and threw the whole Rottwieller Performance catalogue at it more/Less , the suspension is being installed as im typing this i cannot wait to try it out !! and just yesterday installed the Tusk Olympic rack and panniers , hands down best value out there far as i see
Great layout of the differences between the Husky and KTM. The important thing is the new bike meets your requirements. When all is said and done, if it makes you happy and puts a big ol smile on your face, it is the right choice. Best wishes on many happy miles ahead Ian! Cheers!
I thought you said that the Norden was the best off-road adventure bike with a perfect suspension now you are calling it soggy it’s frustrating watching this and I get you have to own new bikes but it would be nice to see you go through the ownership very confusing for people who own one following your recommendations then discounting it.
Everybody listen: I am from the future. The lack of reliability, wind protection, and overall rider comfort eventually becomes too much for Ian to handle with this rally, Much as it did with his 790R! What follows will be several videos espousing the strengths of the 890 rally, followed by a final disillusionment video warning prospective buyers of its weaknesses! I know this is probably shocking news to you. Ian is about to go through a very authentic reversal of previously held opinions about this motorcycle. He needs your support. I've risked opening a dimensional rift sharing this information.
The giggling and your expression at the end says it all about the performance of the bike. I’m a luck owner. Reliability has been ok. The issues I did encounter were all rejected by KTM warranty which confirms the lack off dealer/warranty support in North America. Great bike from a company that cares more about performance than customer service. My riding partner upgrade to the XP Pro on his 890R. I can confirm your pricing quote. Ride safe as you will ride it off-road faster than anything you’ve ever ridden. Looking forward to more of your reviews on the Rally.
Ian we share a name, a passion and now we share a need! You are one up on me, you own an 890 Rally. I’m in Australia 🇦🇺 and they are impossible to find
I bought the 901 on your say so, Ian. And, I'm still happy. I weigh 230lbs and have not had any bottoming out issues yet...probably due to my old age (67). At 6 feet, but 32" inseam I have no buffeting issues. But, I don't have a ADV helmet (yet), but Shoei Qwest. Maybe the screen and helmet combo makes a difference. I'll mod my suspension before trading this great buy. I still giggle like you did in the vid...same engine eh. Price difference in Canada between the T7 and 901 makes the Husky choice a no brainer. Plus a cheap 4 year unlimited mileage extension gives me 6 years of no worries....really.
I have always related to your decision making process and the logic of your thinking. Its what makes your videos so interesting and informative and your opinions are important to me because of it. No doubt there will be some disappointed subscribers out there, but I'm sure they will understand. Another great video
Just picked up a new 2023 Norden (standard model) for $14500 CDN ($11000 USD) 2 year warranty. The 2024 sta dard model ( unchanged other than colour) was 3k more and the expedition 6.5k more (if you could actually find one). Don't ride hard enough off road that the rear shock should be a problem, but if it is, a couple grand should solve it. Not that I would want to do it, but I saw on another channel that removing the hangaurds almost completely eliminated the buffetting.
I wonder if you will be swapping back to the Norden 901 Expedition? I've got an appointment next week to test ride one. If the ride goes well, I will bring it home.
Ian, another great and honest comparison. For all the pre-release teaser videos it’s staggering to me that the Norden is flawed as it is especially the wind buffeting issue which is pretty much a universal concern. I love the styling but form has won over function as is so often the case. I have no off-road pretensions or real opportunities so comfort on-road plays a much greater part in my deliberations. An amalgam of both bikes is the holy grail it seems. I’ll be sticking with my ATAS DCT ES for now. Cheers, Ian
I think it's a big mistake for you as a reviewer to sell the Norden 901, as it's in reviews of possessions that your strong point is. And you should not have sold the Norden for the reasons stated above and that would have been the value of your reviews (including discussing Norden's weaknesses and the dealer's troubleshooting). IMHO, it's much more interesting to watch videos of an interesting model with some problems than boring but reliable models. That's what Novelty Model Reviews is all about - the adventure of ownership.
You are the first person that I have ever heard say that reliability is somehow a bad trait of a motorcycle... Mind boggling. You probably do no actual adventure riding yourself right? Not a single person I know wants 'adventure of ownership' when out on a trip. Especially not when you are stuck far away from paved roads, and help is hard to come by. Sure if you already have 3 other motorcycles in your garage and only take your motorcycle for a sunday ride out, then reliability is of lower concern, but the purpose of adventure bikes is to be going on adventures further than the local Starbucks. And that is where a proper reviewer like Ian comes in, who can inform me as a potential buyer which bike will get me from A to B, and how it does this, and which bike breaks down after 1000 miles.
I kinda agree with you, Evgeniy. It would have been interesting to get more information about long term ownership of the Norden from Ian. Anyway, I can't argue with selling the bike because of the reasons told in the video, Ian shouldn't ride the bike for years if it's not what he wants imo.
@@tHaH4x0r I didn't say reliability was a bad trait. I was saying that not all good things are immediately reliable otherwise we would all only drive Toyota and Honda products, but for some reason we want to learn about Ferrari, Porsche or KTM and Husqvarna. This is not the review of a traveller who has chosen to own a motorbike and owns it all the time. This is a review by a professional reviewer who shows the pros and cons. If it were an ordinary traveller I would agree with the sale as he can't wait for his bike to be repaired. And here it would just be interesting how the problems are fixed, how the dealer and manufacturer treat the problems detected
Anyone that feels that the KTM's are unrealiable, you are right, don't buy it... save your self the hassle, BUT... KTM definitely have something special that makes you carry on with any unreliability that came up with it... i'm almost 30k on my 2020 790 S with not major issues, it brings me back home every time with a smile on my face, and i only think on another ktm for a replacement, not any other brand... i'm a fan boy now.
I beat the shit outta my 790s and it won’t quit. A lot of people h8 on Ktm maybe they used to be shitty? Idk. But all of the Dakar championships can’t be wrong.
@@8andsk835 As a first time Ktm owner what makes me paranoid is all the hate it receives on reliability. Sure it has it’s flaws. I love my 790s. Never fails to make me smile everytime i ride it hard.
@@Makinartz I owned several Ducati sport bikes and all I heard from others was "I want something reliable", but all I saw was jealousy when no one ever stopped to look at their bikes - only mine. My friend has not been as lucky with his 690R as I have with my 790R, but he still loves it and will never sell it. KTM's are the best bikes in the dirt. Period.
I think wind buffeting is being caused by air from the lower fairing and around the headlight area. This air is aimed upwards at the rider's shoulders and mixes with the air coming off the sides of the windscreen, forming a turbulent vortex that shakes the helmet. Narrow adventure bikes seem to have this common problem.
Been watching an awful lot of your videos, so detailed thoughtful and from the heart. I had so bought into the Husqvarna Norden 901, and now I see THIS video. But what I can say is I'm not shocked, at all. Wind buffeting has always been a pet peeve of mine. On my old Ducati st4s, I had two of them, the wind buffeting was pretty bad in my Arai helmet. With that, wind issue can make or break aong ride (even w/ear plugs). Thanks for your detailed motorcycle reviews. I am on board with your sale of the Husqvarna. Thanks.
Great video. I got a near new 790R awesome machine, wind buffering was horrible and surprising for what is a well sorted bike (IMO) A $15 Ebay adjustable diffuser for the screen sorted that out and improved the head wobble by 90%.
So happy for you, Ian!! You’ve got a heck of a bike with the Rally and can’t wait for more content. Thanks for all the great videos!! I just added a 007 Tiger 900 and ready for some adventures….!
Nice overview of what sounds to be the pinnacle of the mid size options. Still convinced that one bike can’t do it all, so I’m still sticking with my GS & if the single track urge gets to strong will buy a 3-500 dual sport.
I get why you switched to the 890, but I sold my 890 for some of the same reasons you sold your Norden. Namely, poor QC and indifference (really, flat-out disregard) from KTM regarding honoring their warranty. My front wheel was out of round when I bought the 890, resulting in wheel hop, and KTM refused to fix it, even after acknowledging the hop. My TFT often fogged horribly (could not even read my speed or use the menus), even after a replacement, and they refused to replace it again. Those were the worst two issues, but there were others. Off pavement, it was the best handling ADV bike I’ve ever ridden. But I will never buy a KTM bike again.
my dad an i rejected two 390 advs for the tft isues at 147 an 269 miles an more problems with his as well, i keep thinking about a norden or an at at the mo
The Norden has round mirrors, the KTM 890 does not. Change the mirrors on the Norden and much of the perceived buffeting will go. Round mirrors generate vortices which come rattling past your ears.
It’s not perceived buffeting , the wind noise from a Norden is a disgrace , your correct about the mirrors the best way to cure is take the mirror from a 390 duke or similar styled that you can buy very cheap from Aliexpress - lower and not round , but the biggest difference comes with fitting a expedition screen and tilting forward slightly ( around 15mm at the top mount ) and adding some side winglets -the screen is far too narrow std . I’ve tried a much bigger Givi screen and it was still very poor above 60mph and cruising , with some winglets attached to my screen I can sit at 100mph no problem if needed . My winglets are made from UK number plate Perspex , and mount on two pillar fitted in front of the screen with a 10-15mm gap between screens , looks fine and works amazing .
Sold my 2014 GS with 95K miles and bought a KTM 890 Adventure R, but found the forks and shocks compression damping way to harsh for street use. The over all ride was not on par with GS long distance and I won't be going off road enough to justify. I bought another GS! But I know the Rally suspension is worlds better than the standard R!
That Rally's suspension is better off-road but probably not any more than the R's on road. These bikes are really off-road bikes that are fast as hell on road. They'll never match the on road comfort of a GS. If they did they would be that Unicorn many of us are looking for.
That's why people who ride on road should not buy the R version. My suspension guy says people come in all the time to adjust the R suspension because they find it rough, but it's always the street guys.
@@jayd3931 It also has to do with the grade of suspension it comes with. The Rally comes with a grade above that I'm better deals with sharp edge hits much better.
One issue I cannot get over is KTM only offering a 1 year warranty. KTM doesn’t stand by their product and I know numerous KTM owners who have had nothing but problems getting things covered under warranty for their adventure bikes.
i'm at 11.000 kms in 3 months with Norden, and couldn't be happier. with my weight of 65kgs, i can hit jumps and agressive trails while packed. my preload is always at max tho.
QUESTION Does this limited edition have different suspension than the regular adventure R? I guess different rear PDS? Its 50% more expensive in the netherlands. Found it: When it comes to suspension, the 2021 890 Adventure R uses the same fully-adjustable 48mm WP XPLOR fork and WP XPLOR PDS shock as before, with updated suspension settings. In contrast, the 890 Adventure R Rally is equipped with WP Pro components, a WP XPLOR Pro 7548 fork, featuring cone valve technology, and a WP EXPLOR PRO 6746 shock with 270mm of travel, 30mm more than the 890 Adventure R.
for you that was the move and just finding a true 'Rally' model to buy is a feat in itself , i looked but to no avail , and you can upgrade that suspension for half of that or less but resale value your right
I have the Norden 901 expedition. I definitely prefer it over the KTM in looks and comfort. It’s more than enough for me and the type of riding I do. I’ve had no issues with it and have made no mods except for changing out the stock hand guards for bark busters.
The Norden probably has the best aftermarket support for a new bike ever, because it’s literally an 890 and the new OEM touring screen is shipping already. Justification statements are always a trap. Just say you got hella excited for an 890 Rally because it’s bad ass! :)
Ian, Should I sell my 2021 KTM 890 base to buy a 2022 Nordon 901. I like the Husky body style and color. The suspension has compression and rebound on the front forks opposed to none on the base 890 which I've bottomed out a lot. It may cost me another $2k. Is it worth it? As a 61-year-old, my off-road riding has been tapered down quite a bit so I don't need an 890R or Rally. Is it worth it or do you think I'm just wasting money for different body style and color change? Ray
It's a shame that KTM can't look like the Norden, most of us know KTM are certainly better but when you spend that money in a motorcycle, you expect to see it so gorgeous.
Highly relevant points you bring up in the video. But would the new Norden 901 Expedition solve all these points? Better suspension, higher windshield and even better skid plate?
Hay mate Paul from Australia, riding is 80% the rider 20% the bike . I take my old TE630 and Yamaha XT660 places that 790/ 890 riders will not . I’m not saying I’m any gun 🔫 rider , I’m not bad for. 54 year old ( have slowed a little in the last 2 years as a result of a BIG off , all this money 💰 people keep spending on bikes to make them a better rider ( not saying you are ) but a lot I know , just get out and ride that’s what improves your ridding NOT all the bells 🔔 and whistles.
Maybe, but a rider can only do what he (or she) can do. As an owner of TE300, EXC530, 690 Enduro R and Yamaha XT660R I very well know what I can do with those bikes. With 690 I can go to places I'd never manage with XT660R, and so it is, it does not make me any better or help to say that I am a lousy rider. My son can ride that heavy XT660R thru the same stone garden or a mud pit I can ride with 690. Same with TE300 vs. EXC 530. And, being a kid of 50's, it just is better to get a good bike than to get hurt with a heavy and soft thumper.
@@kimmosuomalainen9945 your talking about totally different types of bikes mate an XT660 R which I also own does not have the capability of a 300-500 LIGHT enduro bike , even a 690 to some degree, but if we are talking say mid weight ADV , or light weight Dual sport , or Enduro 450-500,s are all in there “ weight devision you could say “ say not a lot of different between those classes , that we’re riding abilities out shines what your bike ability will or NOT do any day, .
@@trevorwright7780 , what I’m saying it’s rider ability “ Tody Price could outride most anywhere on just about anything “ . Yes for us mortals 😂😂, we do our best and try and get the best tool for the job . I’m saying because you have a 790,890 , CFR1100 , KTM500 Husky 701 doesn’t make you a better rider actually getting out and riding does that and if you have been brought up riding from a young tracker that most certainly helps in most cases . Iv owned quite a lot of new bikes and yes on some great suspension is fantastic and at the end of a long days hard riding you will not feel as beaten up ⬆️ ESPECIALLY when you get older with stuffed knees back etc “ like me 😂😂😂” But we do all know ADV/ dual sport enduro bikes are money 💰 pits on modifying accessories etc .My outlook now buy a bike new or second hand with low kms and keep it for 5-6 years get your money’s worth out of it and the money you put into it . Also you don’t worry as much when you drop it etc . Say I buy a good low km bike for 10 grand with most fruit already put on the bike BUT as we all love putting stuff on our bikes we put say another 2 grand in .12 grand that’s cost you 2 per year over 6 years ( that’s cheap ) when you sell probably lose 1/2 but sell accessories separately to fund another bike. Obviously if the bike craps itself your up for more money 💰, but I’m not talking about service costs and general wear and tear items , tyres , chain and sprockets etc . I guess with age I have become more conservative with age , doesn’t mean I don’t have the money to go and buy the latest and the greatest would rather use that money out riding doing multi day trips away . Hay but this is just my option each to their own .
Hello Ian. I do not understand. You sold it due to poor reliability and bought bike from the same manufacturer? I expect it will also have the same problems.
How would you compare your previous 2020 790 Adventure R to your new 890 Adventure R rally? Should I upgrade?? My 790 R has had no shock issues or any of the common problems that Ive seen on youtube. I paid cash for my 2020 790 Adventure R. back in 2020, And I love this bike! It has more than enough HP for me,, I don't really need 5 more HP. Plus Im not one to jump 40 feet into the air. So maybe I'm good with the stock 2020 KTM 790 Adventure R suspension . I'm curious if the Rally mode is any different compared to the 790. Thanks in advance for answering my ?? HAPPY TRAILS!! ]
One of the biggest things I liked about the concept of the Norden was that it gives you enough tech to correct your riding, while still being able to haul ass on it offroad. Just from the couple of clips, it appears the 890 gives you that same feeling of the bike "riding for you", with better suspension and after market support. But on another note with that in mind, I'm really looking forward to the Tenere World Raid making its way to the states and seeing your impressions and reviews compared to the experience you have on the other bikes.
I heard all the after market parts for the 890 R will work on the Norden 901, so I'm not really understanding why you made that comment, except for the windscreen I definitely understand you on that note. Great video Ian another reason why I subscribe, and I love both bikes!
Don't you get that same upgraded suspension on the Nordon Expedition? From my memory, you had the regular Nordon. The regular Nordon has soft sprung road-oriented suspension.
I’m glad you upgraded to the 880 rally, but it has all the dings that also hated about your 790 such as the wind buffeting, cable clutch, wonky fuel gauge, etc.
I wish you would have dealt with the rear shock and minor fork suspension work, MAD in Australia went over the top and spent $6.5K to remedy a problem that should cost maybe a grand. THAT WOULD HAVE MADE A GREAT VIDEO.
Thanks for the video! I would appreciate your opinion. I currently have a T7 and I have used it for the WYBDR and the IDBDR. I am looking for another motorcycle for a little off road (but I will mainly use the T7) and some sports touring (one up). In your opinion would the KTM 890 Adv, or Norden 901, or ?? fit this use? Thanks.
I'm having trouble with my 890r TFT going bonkers every time it rains 🌧. Speedo and odometer quit and all of my warning ⚠️ lights go off. Most TFT problems I've heard of are where the screen just goes blank. Anyone else have the issues I'm having?
I had a Penske rear shock built for my KTM 890 Adventure. $ 1200 +/- Fully adjustable , including height, so I lowered the rear about 1 inch, along with my forks.
What an absolute great bike! I have bought a standard 890 adventure because where I live there is no place you can ride off-road! So enjoy it man! 👍✌️😀
Struggling to understand this purchase, maybe I misunderstood the comparison video with the T7 where the KTM engine was described as a bag of nails on startup. Perhaps a lighter 690 would have made more sense?
I don't love the sound and really wish it had a 270 degree crank, but the motor is a beast! And gets 52 miles to the gallon at 70 mph with luggage and cruise control on.
I don't quite get *why the Norden 901 Expedition, which has that suspension, for $1500-2000 extra + many other upgrades, didn't make the cut. I've ridden both the 901 and 901 Expedition and they are much different, although I do know the Expedition has lighter springs than the 890R. Was it not yet released? KTM definitely has better wind screens. I think neither seat is better, just road vs off-road bias. They're basically the same bike and similar warranty. Perhaps dealer relationships and proximity would be valid points, specific to each individual.

Klim carlsbad suit review.
What is the soft top case you have on the Husky? Thanks.
If you weren’t happy with the customer service on the 901 I don’t see that buying a ktm would be any better
He won't be, but the joy of the 890 Rally probably makes up for it. I feel similar about my 890 ADV R. Horrendous CS from KTM corporate, but a few small issues, but the joy of riding the bike off sealed roads outweighs it.
Apparently, you did not watch the entire video.
He covers this several times did you not watch the video?
Awesome idea
Its almost looks like Husqvarna watched your video and made Expedition model after that 😂, thank you for all your great work by the way!
Thanks
Agreed about buffering, big issue
Ditto.
I put an Vario wind spoiler thing on my Strom, fixed the buffeting problem. But i sold the Strom because it sucked off road..lol
I hated the wind buffering on my vstrom to. Beat me to death at 70mph.
Thanks for sharing

Are you going to review the Norden 901 Expedition and compare it to the KTM 890/890R? Seems like more of a comparison. Can't find that anywhere.
Very good point
This is good clear thinking and an important point when making a decision.
Please do a video on the Norden 901 Expedition.
I am happy for you although it is odd that you state you didn't appreciate the KTM support on the Husky and then bought a KTM.
He literally is captain inconsistent.
Hard to pass on these fun machines.
I thought the same thing, Lol
A good dealership means everything...
he explained exactly why and even repeated the exact simple reason why a few times ""PERFORMANCE""!!! the ktm890husky901 pkg is simply the absolute hands down best performing adventure bike set up made today and by a margin esp off road !! he has resources , connections and money both and found a "Rally" bike for sale , the only few ive seen for sale were at or north of $25k usd and by the time i saw the add already sold even at that $ !! i am building the 901 instead
Love to hear your opinion on the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition, now with the new windshield en WP Xplor / Pro suspension.
Same reason I sold my KTM.....
KTM washed their hands of it, not their problem, dealers are independent magically and KTM are happy to use them (oh, and this has happened to others at the same dealership, as I found out after the event)
So, call me cynical, but KTM can get lost. When my wee 390 adventure needs anything, I'll sell it and never touch KTM again.
Great bikes. Worst company I've dealt with in over 40 years owning bikes
he explained it in great detail and then repeated his explanation multiple times , its rather simple actually
thank god i must just be the luckiest ktm/husky owner that goes on the internet for decades now !! i love my great luck
Cheers!
Agreed
Thanks for the follow-up on your decision on the 901
I thought you said that the Norden was the best off-road adventure bike with a perfect suspension now you are calling it soggy it’s frustrating watching this and I get you have to own new bikes but it would be nice to see you go through the ownership very confusing for people who own one following your recommendations then discounting it.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank for breaking the time continuum.
Ha. Gotta keep cranking out that TH-cam content I guess.
@JF are you suggesting the 23 Norden "Expedition" will be the latest, greatest cure all?
I think I was married to his sister once...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The giggling and your expression at the end says it all about the performance of the bike. I’m a luck owner. Reliability has been ok. The issues I did encounter were all rejected by KTM warranty which confirms the lack off dealer/warranty support in North America. Great bike from a company that cares more about performance than customer service.
My riding partner upgrade to the XP Pro on his 890R. I can confirm your pricing quote.
Ride safe as you will ride it off-road faster than anything you’ve ever ridden.
Looking forward to more of your reviews on the Rally.
Is the husqvarna norden 901 expedition exactly what you're looking for?😀
That's exactly what I was thinking!
Does this bike have the same cold weather starting issues and automatic memory reset on pre set buttons
I was just telling my daughter about you and your Norton 901. Then this video pops up. Cheers 🍻
Thank you, it's my 2023 current buying dilemma
I wonder if you will be swapping back to the Norden 901 Expedition? I've got an appointment next week to test ride one. If the ride goes well, I will bring it home.
You just reminded me how good this bike really is. Looking forward to the review and to pricing used KTMs lol.
Cheers, Ian
Dude, you got the best job in the world! Thanks for sharing!
Waiting for the Norden Expedition review!
Danke!
KTM may be unreliable for some, but I've had nine of them since 2007 and have had only minor issues.
I've had 3 (albeit pure dirt bikes) over the last 10 years and they have all been trouble free.
Me too
I ride a 950 Adv from 2004. 145000 km on the clock. Runs strong..
U keep selling them no wonder they are reliable
30k km or miles? Im in my 5k km on my 790s.

I have a 790 Rally and love to push it hard. Looking forward to seeing more content from you!
Great video. I got a near new 790R awesome machine, wind buffering was horrible and surprising for what is a well sorted bike (IMO) A $15 Ebay adjustable diffuser for the screen sorted that out and improved the head wobble by 90%.

Nice overview of what sounds to be the pinnacle of the mid size options. Still convinced that one bike can’t do it all, so I’m still sticking with my GS & if the single track urge gets to strong will buy a 3-500 dual sport.
That's what my buddy and I did. Kept our Dual Sports, and got an Adventure bike.
I hear you 100%

The Norden has round mirrors, the KTM 890 does not.
Change the mirrors on the Norden and much of the perceived buffeting will go. Round mirrors generate vortices which come rattling past your ears.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing!
You live in Aarowhead? Did I buy your 890?
That Rally's suspension is better off-road but probably not any more than the R's on road. These bikes are really off-road bikes that are fast as hell on road. They'll never match the on road comfort of a GS. If they did they would be that Unicorn many of us are looking for.
That's why people who ride on road should not buy the R version. My suspension guy says people come in all the time to adjust the R suspension because they find it rough, but it's always the street guys.
@@jayd3931 It also has to do with the grade of suspension it comes with. The Rally comes with a grade above that I'm better deals with sharp edge hits much better.
can’t wait for the 890 review! I’m torn between the 690 enduro and 890 rally
Thanks for the excellent, informative video's and content!
I heard many people complaining about KTM 890 wind buffering, it is really much better than the Norden?
Ian… A brilliant video !
My friend came to the same conclusion with the 901! utterly fascinating
What do you think is best mid size value 95% highway and 5% gravel roads.
In contrast, the 890 Adventure R Rally is equipped with WP Pro components, a WP XPLOR Pro 7548 fork, featuring cone valve technology, and a WP EXPLOR PRO 6746 shock with 270mm of travel, 30mm more than the 890 Adventure R.
for you that was the move and just finding a true 'Rally' model to buy is a feat in itself , i looked but to no avail , and you can upgrade that suspension for half of that or less but resale value your right
For your type of riding, do you prefer the big bikes or smaller ones like the 400-700cc class.
I have the Norden 901 expedition. I definitely prefer it over the KTM in looks and comfort. It’s more than enough for me and the type of riding I do. I’ve had no issues with it and have made no mods except for changing out the stock hand guards for bark busters.
How many km ,do you have with Norden
You should have stuck with the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports.
The Norden probably has the best aftermarket support for a new bike ever, because it’s literally an 890 and the new OEM touring screen is shipping already.
Justification statements are always a trap. Just say you got hella excited for an 890 Rally because it’s bad ass! :)

Waiting for more vids.
Ian,
Should I sell my 2021 KTM 890 base to buy a 2022 Nordon 901. Ray
The review on the Tenere still my fav......Great channel
It's a shame that KTM can't look like the Norden, most of us know KTM are certainly better but when you spend that money in a motorcycle, you expect to see it so gorgeous.
I'm getting used to it
I'm getting some suspension work on the Norden then it'll be perfect, well not really but close to very good
Highly relevant points you bring up in the video. But would the new Norden 901 Expedition solve all these points? Better suspension, higher windshield and even better skid plate?
I've heard a rumor that only the front shock is getting upgraded. Still waiting the specs for the Expedition....
Glad I was wrong!

Couldn't agree more
Maybe, but a rider can only do what he (or she) can do.
So you won’t take your 790 where the 660 goes? Mate I’m not sure where in Australia you’re riding but that just sounds wrong 😑
Hi, I have the 2020 F900XR BMW, but thinking to trade for the Norden 901. What are your thoughts?? Thanks. I like touring no big off road fan.

So if you are ok disclosing what did you end up selling the Norden for? and what did you purchase the KTM for?
Great choice! Smiles can’t be measured.
How does Norden do in comparison with Tuareg for long touring? Thank you
One of the biggest things I liked about the concept of the Norden was that it gives you enough tech to correct your riding, while still being able to haul ass on it offroad.
If you ever get to make this a full time job, please do. Outstanding review as always
I didn’t read all the comments but aren’t some the KTMs having fuel pump issues as with the KRLs?
I’m glad you upgraded to the 880 rally, but it has all the dings that also hated about your 790 such as the wind buffeting, cable clutch, wonky fuel gauge, etc.
I wish you would have dealt with the rear shock and minor fork suspension work, MAD in Australia went over the top and spent $6.5K to remedy a problem that should cost maybe a grand. THAT WOULD HAVE MADE A GREAT VIDEO.
The real question I have is when will you get a tuareg 660 for long term review??
Thanks for the video! I would appreciate your opinion. I currently have a T7 and I have used it for the WYBDR and the IDBDR. I am looking for another motorcycle for a little off road (but I will mainly use the T7) and some sports touring (one up). In your opinion would the KTM 890 Adv, or Norden 901, or ?? fit this use? Thanks.
If u already have a T7 those are kind of similar. I'd look at an R1200GS or something that size.
@@BigRockMoto thank you. Any opinion / insight on the 2023 Yamaha 9 GT plus. I like my T7 and suspect they would be very similar. Thanks.
Sorry I meant T7 is similar to the 890 and 901 as you stated (not Tracer 9GT +) Thanks for your insight. I envy all the bikes you get to ride.
I'm having trouble with my 890r TFT going bonkers every time it rains 🌧. Speedo and odometer quit and all of my warning ⚠️ lights go off. Most TFT problems I've heard of are where the screen just goes blank. Anyone else have the issues I'm having?
Finding a Rally version WOW. I have the Adventure R and I love it.
I had a Penske rear shock built for my KTM 890 Adventure. $ 1200 +/-
Fully adjustable , including height, so I lowered the rear about 1 inch, along with my forks.
What an absolute great bike! I have bought a standard 890 adventure because where I live there is no place you can ride off-road! So enjoy it man! 👍✌️😀
hi! do you feel like you miss out on touring/tarmac capabilities now and comfort?
Thanks Ian. Great job. Good info. God bless. Happy trails.
Struggling to understand this purchase, maybe I misunderstood the comparison video with the T7 where the KTM engine was described as a bag of nails on startup.
Perhaps a lighter 690 would have made more sense?
It might sound bad, but its still a good engine..
When I had my Norden the Expedition wasn't released.
