He was at the time he graduated, the all time leading rusher in Florida high school football history. When you consider the athletes in Florida, that in itself is tremendous.
The Great Wall of Dallas wasn't blocking for him in high school, for his detractors.
Emmitt broke records at every level.

Even as NFL’s all time leader in career rushing yards, I think Emmitt Smith’s greatness is under appreciated. The vision, patience, pad level, and unbelievable balance were part of what made him special. Yes, he had a great offensive line, but even with that offensive line, there’s almost nobody else that could have achieved what ES achieved. As a rookie in his early 20’s, he was writing down his goals.
That said, I will always want to know what Barry Sanders would have accomplished with the Cowboys offensive line. I think we could have seen a 2300 yard season. More than one 2,000 yard season. Some people love to say that Barry Sanders danced around too much, you couldn’t count on him to hit the hole between the tackles. All I have to say in response to that nonsense is watch his college tape. At Oklahoma State, he had an offensive line that could consistently create sizable holes for Barry Sanders to run thru. Almost ever season he was in Detroit, their offensive line was below average, and they didn’t have a QB. So the reason Barry Sanders juked instead of hitting the hole is because there was no hole for him to run thru. I’ve heard Emmitt Smith say that he believes if Barry kept playing, he would have surpassed 20,000 career rushing yards. Barry averaged 5.0 yards per carry over his career. That’s VERY special.

Yes, we can talk about the offensive line being a big part, but Emmitt Smith was great at breaking tackles and was a great inside runner. The Cowboys bread and butter was the lead draw and they ran it over and over again and teams just couldn't slow it down. Another reason is that Jerome Brown who sadly died in the offseason in 1992, the Eagles run defense just wasn't the same. Brown was that big run stopper and without him Emmitt was able to run for over 100 twice against the Eagles. Once in the regular season and the second in divisional round. People forget about Darryl "Moose" Johnston. He played big big part in the offense. Could run and pass blow wonderfully. Could catch the ball over the middle. Even better you can hand him the ball on 3rd and one and he would get it.

@@fairlanemuscle Dallas o-line in the 90’s was called “the Great Wall of Dallas”. If you google best lines in NFL history many historians, not TH-cam commentors, have them as being in the top 10. No line gives up zero sacks, and some players aren’t made the same as others when it comes to concussions. Horrible barometer of how to measure an O-line. Now if you also google who’s the greatest RB all time you’ll never find one by a sports historian that has Emmit number 1. Sometimes people are just in the right place at the right time.

Emmitt Smith was a good running back, running behind one of the best o lines in all of football. Sorry. But you are no Barry Sanders. Sanders retired early to get out and away from an awful team and organization. If he wouldn't have, you wouldn't have had the rushing title. Facts. No one, absolutely no one, could touch Barry Sanders. But to Smith's credit, even he stated that several times.

where i disagree with commentators about the Cowboys is they are saying that this years team is the best chance for the Cows to get to a Superbowl. I think we have a good chance to get there but this isn't the best Cowboy team since 95, not by a long shot. If you even look at the 99 Cowboys, the would murder this team. Granted, they lost Michael Irvin for good in the 4th game of the season but that 99 team, their fist game against Washington, they were down by 3 tds and still won the game. That same year, E. Smith scored 2 tds and ran for 140 years before half time vs the Vikings until he broke his hand. if Irvin had not gotten injured at Philly, they might of been able to win a Superbowl that year. I think the year Dez got robb of "the catch" was the best chance to win a Ring since 95 but there have been better over all teams before this team. @@VanBoy
