Laundry had a lot of players believe this, because he used that to get the best out of them.
I was at the Rams game in November 1990. What was exciting was that not only did they beat a good Rams team, but you could see and feel the team getting better. I did not know then that Troy was tired of it all, but he certainly made the right choice by sticking around !
I understand where you're coming from,Troy definitely has the smarts, but nowadays he couldn't be effective with the prima donnas they've got suiting up. They'd whine on social media and to every sports talking head that would listen about how "abusive" and "toxic" he was.
We beat the Skins that year, it was like winning the Super Bowl that year! I am so happy you made it out alive, you were awesome and such a great athlete and QB!
I watched every play of every game that year. When they beat skins I thought something was about to happen to extend the game so that they would lose again. Lean times made the wins even sweeter.
Man, nobody remembers now, but it was touch & go for a minute between Troy Aikman & Steve Walsh as to who was going to be the Cowboys QB of the future. The 1 win they had in 1989 Walsh was the QB.
Walsh was a very good college player, but his arm strength was way below average and nowhere near enough for the nfl caliber of players. That’s what did him in.
@@robertjayroe9900 Here's the worst part...Dallas would have had the #1 pick in the 1990 draft, but since they drafted Walsh in the supplemental draft they had to forego that pick. Who could they have had? Try Cortez Kennedy. Then again, they may have drafted Blair Thomas & then never drafted Emmitt Smith who probably becomes a Viking or Packer.
Demon is my favorite sports commentator. I like his voice. He’s probably second all-time to John Madden John Madden used to say Troy was the most accurate quarterback to ever played in the NFL.
There is such a winning formula to coaching that coaches hate to use that Troy is talking about above. Got people to do what they were best at. John Wooden at UCLA did the same thing which made him the winningest coach in college men's basketball.
Those team were loaded with talent at coaching. Wannstedt, Davis, Norv, Houck, Campo etc. Almost all of them got a shot at being at a HC in the NFL. Though they did not do well lol.
I met Troy back then. I was at Bellagio in Vegas. We were down at restaurant for breakfast and he walks in and sits down a few tables over from me. I wanted to say hello to him but he just seemed to have the weight of world on his shoulders. I said, I think I will leave him in peace to have breakfast. As it turns out I saw him again in lobby. Such a quality guy. I told him he sat near me in restaurant and I thought about telling him I was huge cowboy fan. He smiled and said thank you. I’ve been able to meet Roger Staubach twice, Bob Lily, I was at Tony Dorset’s house making a leak repair on his roof one day. After I finished he sat in living room and just talked for 15 minutes. The next thing we knew there was knocking at his door. It was Murray w tv sports show. They wanted to know his comment on cowboys signing Herschel Walker for much bigger contract than he had. He was so angry. He deserved better than Dallas gave him that day. The next day I saw him at San Francisco Steakhouse with a beautiful blond girl. He was drunk and was all over her while sitting in lobby. It was obscene.
I've written offenses and that is what you do. I'm amazed at how many coaches can't do this while continue to have a job. Norv was a very good OC, but was an average HC.
They have a bunch of primadonnas now complaining on social media about "hard training camps". Forget it, only the guy with old-school mindse can right this ship. Oh, and Jerry should sell the Cowboys to someone who cares.
Never understood why more coordinators don't do it that way. I understand having a system philosophy, but in the end, you have to work with what you've got.
This is great, never heard the bottom line scoop that determines a winner, or not! Dallas, ' my Cowboys" teetering on the brink of "nothing lessning" in da NFL. To what they became several years after ward, is truly remarkable! this a great film for ALL Cowboys fans!!!! Thumbs up!!!!
I really liked this video. I wasn't really much into football at this particular time when Aikman got drafted as the number one pick overall and that was the year that they went 1-15. So it was really the following year that I actually started paying more attention to football in general and following the Cowboys and they were a bit frustrating to watch I have to say. They did end up going 7-9 that year and I can remember a couple of those games and one in particular. I think it was against New Orleans and Bobby Hebert was the quarterback and I was like we can beat these guys because at this point they already have Aikman, Irvin, and Emmitt Smith and there was a lot of talk about how this is a promising team, they have a lot of potential, they got talent, and so on and so forth and so I was like yeah we can beat these guys and they got beat in that game. You could see sparks here and there and like they mentioned in the video, towards the end of the year they went on a little run and they won like four straight and things were starting to look up and of course after that it's just the history of what happened from that point on with the Cowboys. They go on and win like three straight Super Bowls and so it was really interesting going through that building stage and the way they describe it in the video it's just like little pieces here and there that they had to, it wasn't just the talent on the field, I mean that's the most important is having talent on the field but then having guys who can manage it and they had all the right pieces, you had Jimmy Johnson already in place and we know what kind of head coach he was, I mean he was just one of those disciplinarian type coaches, he wasn't going to be the kind of coach that would get outcoached regularly, he knew his football and then you had Aikman who was the kind of leader you want on the field, I mean when I heard him in this interview here, they talk about how, or he talks about how he was real demanding of people and of the other players on the field and he said he was confrontational which I never really got, you got a little bit of that impression because you would see him yell at people sometimes on the field but you listen to him and he just sounds like a really kind of even keeled kind of guy and you just don't imagine him being a confrontational type but he did have a temper and he would confront guys and he would be very demanding of them and you need that kind of guy, you can't have somebody who's wishy washy and he even said it himself, he didn't want to be anybody's friend out on the field, it was all about production and that was kind of an interesting thing that he mentioned and he was so intent on seeing that his team win that he had put a lot of pressure on himself, I had no idea that the pressure was getting to him that much, I mean he would have thought in the first year going 1 in 15 that that was when he was going to feel the burden and the pressure, especially being the number one pick but he actually says it was the second year and so much so that he was even talking to his agent about getting traded, I had never heard that before so that was an interesting new little piece of information we got out of this video. So there's the next piece, you have Jimmy Johnson, you have a quarterback who's a real leader, actually all three of those guys, the triplets, Michael Irvin, Emmett Smith, they were all leaders and then you had Norv Turner come in and he becomes your offensive coordinator and he really helped to turn that team around as well so it was just this sort of gradual build up and sometimes we have the expectation, you have all this talent on the field or in basketball, on the court and you just expect instant results and it just doesn't happen, you've got to have the right leadership there as well and so this was a really neat video to watch and listen to. Listen to my answer, reply in voice, and join my spoken conversations at TubeTalkers
I think part of what makes a coach good is designing a scheme that takes advantage of the players strengths and abilities rather than trying to fit a players strengths and abilities into the coaches scheme.
I never liked Dallas, ever. But I have to respect Coach Johnson's resilience. It also sounds like Norv Turner was very intelligent to employ a Don Shula approach- exploit each player's strengths instead of trying to force each athlete into your 'system'.
They had a pretty decent tight end in Witten. Triplets my ass. What about the O line. That whole offense was a wrecking crew. The “triplets” get to much attention and the rest get not anywhere near enough.
Lmao are you drunk? Jason Witten came way, way after this era was over lol you can’t be serious. You meant to say tight end, Jay Novacek. You had to have meant that. The triplets get too much attention??…. yeah you’re right. 3 hall of famers, including the NFL’s all time leading rusher lol. You’re hilarious.
People like to use the o-line to discredit the Triplets, but none of them ever made a Pro Bowl prior to Irvin (the first who came) and were all part of the 1-15 team. They became a great line with multiple Pro Bowlers, but the success of the Triplets made them who they are.
I think the offense in general gets a little too much of the credit. The truth is, the DEFENSE Jimmy brought with him from Miami was just as vital to the 90's Cowboys success. The smaller, faster linebackers, overall team defensive speed, rotating the entire defensive line, etc.
I know some old timer Viking fans. There is no team on Earth in any sport they hate more than the Dallas Cowboys. A gut wrenching hate. Like the hate I once had for the Pittsburg Steelers. Now I'm getting mad so I better stop remembering those SuperBowl losses.
Football is simple. Coaches make it harder. Coaches have to KNOW what they have and build a scheme that works for you them. That’s how’ll find success.
It's crazy how fast they went from terrible to SB champs. Jimmy was right that the losing shit was over... he was just a bit too early on it! It just took a little more time, but not that much. 1-15, 7-9, 11-5, 13-3 and SB champs.
It turned out well for the Cowboys, but being drafted #1 overall to a very bad team probably took some years off the back end of Aikman's career. He took a lot of hits and had a lot of concussions early in his career, although in those days, players just shook them off and put themselves at serious risk of permanent brain injury. Hopefully it won't take years off the end of his life, but that 1-15 season was pretty brutal.
I never likes the Cowboys , I remember the first two seasons that Aikman played for them. He is lucky to still be alive. He literally got the hell kicked out of him. After surviving that mess he was able to prove how tough he was and be a leader to a future Dynasty. Aikman and Staubach were 2 of the toughest to have played.
I hate the cowboys but I have to respect Troy for his leadership and competitiveness. And the fact it ticked off Troy with the lackadaisical attitude of Switzerland after Johnson.
People forget how good Jimmy drafted and how poorly barry drafted. If Jimmy's able to continue building that monster who knows how far that team would have gone
I like Tony Romo, but Troy Aikman is well spoken, hes very approachable, he was a leader of men, but Troy had great arm & accuracy but Cowboys where a control the clock management ( Run team) Emmitt Smith .. Troy Aikman did care about STATS .. Winning was GOAL 1.) Great Athlete & with Great head on this shoulders & Troy & Tom Brady never get old listing too...
Jerry Jones bringing his college teammate to the Cowboys was the best thing he ever did. Jerry Jones getting rid of his college teammate was the death of the franchise.
It still took. 2 years to turn the ship around. The nfl doesn’t normally have the patience to build the team to what it turned into. But if Jimmy hung around, the boys would have been to more super bowls. Winning them? I don’t know.
I had a great argument that if Coach had stayed with team and Jerry not interfere we would have won 5 in a row. I know it was good because I'd pitch the thought to people who hated the Cowboys and they all had the same hmmmmmm response...
yep and that's what the Cowboys did simply the offense. Timing routes that Irvin did well and for Alvin Harper throw the ball deep and up and out fight the defender which he did so well. For Emmitt it was run inside and running the lead draw. They did that over and over teams couldn't stop it.
Hear say. We think they would have won more but you never know how close you are to injury. Yes, In a perfect world they would have done more of the same. It doesn't matter. It's just a sport not a war between nations and I credit sports for being some countries together in sports rather than war.
back in the day The Dallas Cowboy "triplets" was America's team. They started with nothing and went all the way. While I've never like the Cowboys, I've always respected them all the way back to the days of Tom Landry.
Troy Aikman If you look at his career stats, not very impressive, but you don't win 2 Bowl Games and 3 NFL Championships without being a leader and a winner. He made plays when he needed to make a play
Took him 3rd season to get his shit together was nobodies friend got mad at his players who did not do their jobs in practice and games just wanted to win this doesn't feel like that now or today. Must of been really nice potentially picking choosing a NFL team to play on with your agent also almost like a Right instead of a Privilege.
@@davidlee7092 Well, he conveniently left it out too. Aikman was a good QB. But let's be honest. Without a roster FESTOONED with future Hall of Famers, how good would he have been? In the mid 1970's, call-in fans on sports talk radio in Cleveland said OHIO State could have beaten the Cleveland Browns. The host, Pete Franklin (who knew sports), said this was pure nonsense.

Laundry had a lot of players believe this, because he used that to get the best out of them.
He was awesome to watch play
I was at the Rams game in November 1990. What was exciting was that not only did they beat a good Rams team, but you could see and feel the team getting better. I did not know then that Troy was tired of it all, but he certainly made the right choice by sticking around !
Troy should be a GM or HC in the NFL. He's got it!
Or even better? Owner of the Dallas Cowboys. Wouldn't that be a hoot???
I understand where you're coming from,Troy definitely has the smarts, but nowadays he couldn't be effective with the prima donnas they've got suiting up. They'd whine on social media and to every sports talking head that would listen about how "abusive" and "toxic" he was.
Easily. He'd have to take a pay cut and I don't think he wants to leave TV.
The most honest NFL commentator
It's a treat to hear Aikman speak. One of the real good guys in sports.
Troy Aikmam is a great quarterback
We beat the Skins that year, it was like winning the Super Bowl that year! I am so happy you made it out alive, you were awesome and such a great athlete and QB!
I watched every play of every game that year. When they beat skins I thought something was about to happen to extend the game so that they would lose again. Lean times made the wins even sweeter.
The offensive and defensive lines were great!!!!
Early on they weren't. Troy was sacked 11 times in one game against the Eagles.
@@drm2364Exactly
Man, nobody remembers now, but it was touch & go for a minute between Troy Aikman & Steve Walsh as to who was going to be the Cowboys QB of the future. The 1 win they had in 1989 Walsh was the QB.
I think us fans remember it as touch and go. But I don't believe Jerry or Jimmy or any coach thought that way. They knew top talent.
I remember when Terry Bradshaw said Walsh should be the long-term starter over Troy.
Troy was driven & the Cowboys could have won several more superbowls if Jerry had his head on straight.
Take what you do best and do that. Forget about the other stuff. Wise words.
I love when they won the NFC Championship beat SF in SF, media ran late interviewing Troy, and Jimmy left Troy.
I've written offenses and that is what you do. I'm amazed at how many coaches can't do this while continue to have a job. Norv was a very good OC, but was an average HC.
I’m still pissed off about the way they treated Tom Landry
I love this!! Troy is awesome
TLDR: Norv Turner is the coach referenced in the title.
This what the Cowboys need now
They have a bunch of primadonnas now complaining on social media about "hard training camps". Forget it, only the guy with old-school mindse can right this ship. Oh, and Jerry should sell the Cowboys to someone who cares.
Troy was a stud . IMO, the best first overall pick ever.
Never understood why more coordinators don't do it that way. I understand having a system philosophy, but in the end, you have to work with what you've got.
Exactly, I give Norv Turner a lot of credit for the success in the '90s.
That was such a great point no one says the center went oh and 11 in their first year it's always the quarterback
This is great, never heard the bottom line scoop that determines a winner, or not! Dallas, ' my Cowboys" teetering
on the brink of "nothing lessning" in da NFL.
Never heard Troy so candid before.
He really gave us lot of the great stories from his career
When I see these two together I always remember when Aikmen called Joe Buck “ partner “. Lmao
Dan Quinn knows how and when to change up assignments and game plans to get the best out of each player.
I think part of what makes a coach good is designing a scheme that takes advantage of the players strengths and abilities rather than trying to fit a players strengths and abilities into the coaches scheme.
I can only imagine what kind of coach Troy Aikman would be.
Troy looks like he could go out on the field today and throw for 250 yardswith a couple of TD’s.
haha, they always say the last thing that goes is the arm talent.
Norv put in a timing based passing offense. That changed everything.
I love Troy! Best QB!!
Great QB 👍 #Troy 🌟⭐ ...I would draft him in a second ...Bobby Hull says, pro hockey player Troy Aikman says, pro QB ❤❤❤
Can’t slay the dragon every game but the Cowboys with Aikman won Super Bowls trying to
I never liked Dallas, ever.
@@thegorn68yep the defence is as ranked better than the offence
He threw that out route about as well as anyone I have seen. You have to have a arm to throw that or the corner will jump it.
How does a young guy move from LA to Henrietta OK and keep his sanity? That is my greatest respect for Troy.
I think you have to thank the Vikings for the worst trade in NFL history. That more than anything helped the Cowboys with there success.
.
I know some old timer Viking fans. There is no team on Earth in any sport they hate more than the Dallas Cowboys. A gut wrenching hate. Like the hate I once had for the Pittsburg Steelers. Now I'm getting mad so I better stop remembering those SuperBowl losses.
Troy Aikman was good when he Played.😀
Troy Aikman: A WARRIOR!!! Injuries slowed him, or he could have potentially been The G. O. A. T.!!!
Football is simple. Coaches make it harder. Coaches have to KNOW what they have and build a scheme that works for you them. That’s how’ll find success.
I thought the Hershel Walker trade with all those draft picks made them.
Hearing Troy swear surprised me. lol
Troy would curse like a drunken sailor in their practices and in their games.
Your class act Troy
I hate the cowboys but I have to respect Troy for his leadership and competitiveness. And the fact it ticked off Troy with the lackadaisical attitude of Switzerland after Johnson.
People forget how good Jimmy drafted and how poorly barry drafted. If Jimmy's able to continue building that monster who knows how far that team would have gone
You have to Taylor your offense or defense around the people you have
"Taylor"?
I like Tony Romo, but Troy Aikman is well spoken, hes very approachable, he was a leader of men, but Troy had great arm & accuracy but Cowboys where a control the clock management ( Run team) Emmitt Smith .. Troy Aikman did care about STATS .. Winning was GOAL 1.) Great Athlete & with Great head on this shoulders & Troy & Tom Brady never get old listing too...
Isnt this a replay of a show from years ago?
Does troy aikman age! 😮 dude still looking good
it also helped that that D was second to none. i wanted aikman to be traded to the 9ers.
Jerry Jones bringing his college teammate to the Cowboys was the best thing he ever did. Jerry Jones getting rid of his college teammate was the death of the franchise.
The Minnesota Vikings are the reason for the Cowboy's turnaround. The Cowboys can thank them for all the draft picks to build that team.
Jimmy engineered that trade.
It still took. 2 years to turn the ship around. The nfl doesn’t normally have the patience to build the team to what it turned into. But if Jimmy hung around, the boys would have been to more super bowls. Winning them? I don’t know.

When was this interview?
I had a great argument that if Coach had stayed with team and Jerry not interfere we would have won 5 in a row. I know it was good because I'd pitch the thought to people who hated the Cowboys and they all had the same hmmmmmm response...
Norv Turner!
Norv Turner…… every QB coached by him turns it around.
yep and that's what the Cowboys did simply the offense.
Title says Troy Aikman but that tan says Troy Martinez.
The original "game-manager"
back in the day The Dallas Cowboy "triplets" was America's team. They started with nothing and went all the way. While I've never like the Cowboys, I've always respected them all the way back to the days of Tom Landry.
The best thing about that 1-15 season is the redskins were super bowl champions and we beat them for our only win.
Troy Aikman
If you look at his career stats, not very impressive, but you don't win 2 Bowl Games and 3 NFL Championships without being a leader and a winner. He made plays when he needed to make a play
Buck can’t hide his bedroom eyes, anytime Troy talks.
why is jay-z talking football with Joe bucks????
Took him 3rd season to get his shit together was nobodies friend got mad at his players who did not do their jobs in practice and games just wanted to win this doesn't feel like that now or today. Must of been really nice potentially picking choosing a NFL team to play on with your agent also almost like a Right instead of a Privilege.
The Cowboys had little talent Aikman's first year. They only won 1 game. The year before, with Landry coaching, they won three games.
Troy doesn't mention that they only won one game, and it wasn't even Aikman at QB!!lol
Yeah he did. Well he said they went 1-15 but didn't say he wasn't under center.
@@davidlee7092 Well, he conveniently left it out too. Aikman was a good QB. But let's be honest. Without a roster FESTOONED with future Hall of Famers, how good would he have been? I mean, top to bottom, the sheer array of talent was pretty obscene.
If he can't admit he was quasi-carried by these people, I'll be happy to.
@@corneliuspraeda6452I don’t think Troy is a hall of famer. Good player but I think winning the three super bowls got him in.
Name all of the hall of famers that blocked for him between 1992-1995. I bet you can't. Troy was THE leader of that team. Emmitt and Michael will tell you that. Troy is in the HOF because he was that leader and a great QB and very clutch in big games. He was going to be the #1 pick in '89 no matter what. He was that good and the whole league knew it.@@corneliuspraeda6452
You do realize that he was the MVP of their 1st SB, right? Dude was great in the biggest games. Plus, he was the leader of that team. They don't win those SBs without him.@@jeremykrause153
If Jerry let Jimmy coach the team
If I had Luke Getsy's email address I would send this to him. IJS
I bet bet Jerry Jones kicks himself every day for saying "any coach could've won a Super Bowl with this team". That's what sent Jimmy over the edge and it was the most bonehead statement ever made by any owner
I'm sure Jerry would agree with that
Why is Troy in black face?
Hopefully Bryce young can reach out to Troy because he's gonna be 1 n 16 if things keep going like they are plus Bryce has not improved in 12 games
Jerry Jones's actions are the worst act of hubris I've ever seen. You don't fix what isn't broke. Jimmy Johnson had built an absolute juggernaut. I'm a Niner fan but I think that third year would have been the same thing 3 years in a row.
Troy Aikman needs to call Bryce Young.
Remember when Troy and Joe were caught on a hot mic complaining military jets were flying over NFL games during Trump saying that would never happen under Biden? And it happened a 100 times since? We do….. 😂
I heard Jimmy Johnson say his last team at Miami U could have beat the Cowboys..said the talent level was so bad..when people say a college team couldn't beat a pro team it just isn't true..there are players on Alabama and Georgia who don't even start there who become stars in the NFL..the NFL is a sorry product and league
In the mid 1970's, call-in fans on sports talk radio in Cleveland said OHIO State could have beaten the Cleveland Browns. The host, Pete Franklin (who knew sports), said this was pure nonsense.
