The MIL in the second story sounds like she's taking revenge on the couple for having a small celebration out of town. She went out of her way to embarass the little girl, the bride (twice), and the couple who were "alcoholics". Sorry, if they've quit drinking, they're "recovering alcoholics". And either way, it's nobody's d_mn business to announce! How humiliating! Then the business with the cake - what better way to say "let me spoil your fun! And your tradition! And lie about it as well!" I hope the couple stays far, far away from this bunch.
I gave money to older son and future DIL for their wedding. They called and asked what my expectations were. My expectation was that I would be there. City hall and pocket the money- fine as long as I was there. I thought that was fair 🤷♀️
the 2nd story? the MIL is going to be a problem their entire lives!! No wonder the groom hadn't intro'd them before this. OMG go low to no contact now with MIL
I think the SIL cut the cake to hush up the kids; but, B&G 💯cut the cake at the reception. Not at this one, though. The MIL is toxic. I don’t think the bride would be embarrassed about the alcoholic couple~the couple would be embarrassed by the their host. The MIL is a 🚩, avoid at every possibility.
Nothing like being made to feel like low-value guests at your own wedding! Cut off his family. And if budget & schedules allow, have a blowout party for YOUR mutual friends & your family after the honeymoon.
Hopefully the first story doesn’t end up as crazy as the second story. Family can be good but there is at least that one that has to be told to chill out.
The story about the cake cutting is particularly annoying because the tradition is that the bride and groom cut the first slice of the cake and feed it to each other. It actually goes back to old Roman traditions and is slightly sexist, but it’s also a good luck thing for brides and grooms. To take that away from the couple is very, very disturbing.
Second story MIL invited her friends made an extremely innapproatr comment regarding a child geusts forbid the use of alchol because of one couple and cut the cake because she was ready for it to be over Sounds like a great party for HER Now hold a second wedding and leave her and SIL off the geusts list First story OP invited Dad and the girlfriend to a smaller and less intimite party A wedding is very much a family oriented occasion and should be focused on the bride not akward introductions to the new women

If I were the second bride I would have to leave MIL's party.

Family! Living as a hermit sounds more attractive every day.
