I currently live in the Bay area in a 1,000 sq foot condo part time, and the Philippines an hour south of Manila in the mountains surrounded by Caliraya lake, in a 3K sq ft house nestled in 20 acres of gardens full time for work, with my two dogs. I love both locations.

Nice. I lived in a small apartment in Santa Monica in 1981. I walked under PCH in a tunnel walkway and went swimming in summer. I worked in Santa Monica for 1-2 years. Then I moved to Santa Ana and bicycled the Santa Ana river trail to the beach. Then I moved to Azusa. Then I moved to San Bernardino. Every year I get further away from the ocean and closer to the mountains and desert.

Like any home, it really comes down to the land that the home sits on. In this case it looks like it's in someone's backyard. Hopefully, she has either ownership or a long term lease that does not put her at the whim of some landlord who decides on massive and frequent increases in rent. I know Santa Monica is rent controlled, but I don't know if that also applies to backyard structures.

It's shocking, but there are laws (aka zoning) that make it illegal to build homes, which is why we have a housing shortage. YIMBYs are working on changing laws to allow homes to be built. It's YIMBY organizations that got the California bill passed to legalize backyard units and force Santa Monica to make them legal to build.
Minimalist are to be admired. I personally could not do that. We live in over 3000 sqft and there is only 3 in my family including me and we still want more space to be away from each other but still close to each other...🤣

More clarity, focus and ease is one benefit. Overall energy in this practice of having less has provided an efficient discipline which then gives you more freedom. I moved into this tiny house wanting to be grounded and find myself inside my body again - meeting consciousness. I’ve been able to achieve that and more through this lifestyle.

I use my backpacking stove on my folding table. It’s much easier than cooking on the ground when I’m backpacking!
