@@skylarlimex another reason is that the first two movements are in 3/4. For the third movement Schubert would've needed to make another 3/4 movement, but that's a lot of 3/4 in just one symphony! So that's maybe the reason Schubert stopped there. Greetings 👋
I always hear this piece in 6/8 and am surprised when I see the score in 3/4, which would seem to imply different accentuation from what I hear. Anyone care to elucidate this? Anyway, great analysis and presentation of one of the most powerful pieces of music ever written.
Honestly the 6/8 makes sense, I think Schubert was going for a bit of rhythmic ambiguity for the first theme. Honestly by the time it reaches the second theme however, 3/4 is firmly set in place. I like that however, it helps make it feel more ominous having a sort of rhythmic vagueness.
Hello, Great Video! Just wanted to ask why is the chord at 0:17 (and any other instance where it’s shown) a vii° chord because i think a diminished 7 chord would be A, C-# and E-Flat. I would gladly appreciate it if you could clear that up for me 😅
@@skylarlimexok thanks 😊 I think it would be better to mark it as VII7 instead of VII°. I might be wrong tho. Edit: Nope I’m wrong sorry my bad, I didn’t see that it was an A-sharp so I thought it’s and A Major seven chord
Not anymore, Brian Newbould finished it over 40 years ago. Schubert started but did not finish the Scherzo, got quite far though. He did finish a finale but ended up using it in the incidental music for Rosamunde instead. The first recording of the finished symphony was done by Neville Marriner and the Academy Of St.-Martin-In-The-Fields in 1984 for Philips.
I'm not sure how useful this analysis is - chords only go so far. The choice of avoiding the dominant (F#) in the bass pizzicato deserves more focus, as this seems to subtly up the tension even further from the slow bass introduction - refusing to let the music settle. But then books have been written on this symphony...

It's perfect contrast symphony. Because the first movement is dark and ominous but the second is full of light, absolutely delicious.
couldn't agree more! perhaps that's why he left it unfinished haha

The best schubert symphony❤❤
Cantonese singer, Nicholas Tse's song "Late Night Circus" (hei ye ma xi tuan) was based on this symphony!
Love these my friend. Keep them coming.
Would you be able to analyze Ravel Daphnis et Chloe Part III? Im fascinated by that portion of that symphonie chorégraphique.
I love this!
Great video and analysis, friend!
thank you!

"elucidate" lmao. Pretentious.

@@realBongwaterSmoke another bong, ignoramus. And work on your vocabulary. “Elucidate” is a normal word for intelligent people.

Godowsky did it better in his tribute to Schubert, his Passacaglia based on the opening theme.
