I waited a total of around 16 months for my Oct 2020 Rav4 Cruiser AWD and couldn't be happier.

    • @kdegraa

Toyota always sources the cheapest head units for their cars. A colleague bought a 2003 Camry and it came with a cassette player. Who bought and listened to cassettes in 2003? Clearly Toyota bought a few million of these head units at a good price and keeps putting them in cars till they exhaust their supply.

Hi Paul, Great review as we are looking to order a 2022/2023 model shortly. Unsure what the designer was on when they thought the cheap orange plastic was a good idea. I understand with the 2023 model the infotainment screen is a bit bigger, although having to plug in your phone and no heads up display is very old school. Still there is enough pro's to make the switch. Thank you!

Sold our family 2005 Rav 4 last year (340,000k's, yes that's right). Three generations of family ownership and no major problems, just normal stuff like tyres, breaks etc. No squeaks and solid grey plastic in great condition, starts every time and no shudders or mechanical problems. Always thirsty and ever gave up the drink. If you are buying a new one I hope you are as please with it as we all were. I have just ordered a Mazda, I'll see haw that goes.

That’s an impressive vehicle and I like this blue colour, it reminds me of a blue 1967 toyota crown station wagon that a family friend had from new and it was a fantastic car in it’s day which also proved to be very durable.
I’ve been reluctant to go for a hybrid because they are very complex though this has proved to be not a problem with Toyota as they have turned out to be very reliable but it probably also means that only Toyota can service it which is probably ok if you live in an area where you have a choice of dealerships.

Thanks Paul - Toyota have hit the mark with the attractive exterior styling which I think is is well balanced and yes having been a long term Forester owner I do like the cladding which has protected my wheel arches many times on narrow bush tracks - I don’t like the ‘glued on’ infotainment screen that many manufacturers use as it really should be incorporated into the dash - not a good look to have an inferior rear camera display for this much money - too much bling orange inside - but it’s still the best SUV in its class - happy to own one - John in SA

It's around $58500 drive away Price.
One month with edge Hybrid absolutely love it. Driven 1300km amazing 5.2L/100km
Cruiser and all other model got front grill feel bit cheap silver plastic. Edge got some quality front grill and 19" alloy wheels with awesome design. Ventilated cooling front seats are great.
Digital rear view camera superb. You will never go back to normal mode once you go digital awesome quality camera 100/100.
    LED projector lights superb 100/100
Did some off road drive on trail mode absolutely blown away with ride quality.
Eco and normal mode very helpful in daily commute. Haven't tried yet sport and ev mode.
Heads up display missing but not big fan of it. Radar cruise control is awesome.
    Cons
No memory seat function for two drivers
    Passenger side manual adjustment seat.
    Ambient lighting can be better.
No Wireless android auto and apple car play.
Camera quality (when you reverse your car) is not so great.
Ride quality 100/100 and reliability of vehicle and Toyota reputation will make you to forget all cons.

I own a Rav4 cruiser hybrid AWD.(Aug 2021) and the reverse camera is quite a grainy image by default. However it can be adjusted to a vibrant crystal clear image by going into the menu setting and adjusting the contrast, color saturation, brightness etc to give you a much sharper picture, which none of the videos on You Tube that I've seen have pointed out. Hope this helps. Rob. UPDATE: it's curious that all the fuel economy tests done on this particular model reach an average figure of 4.6L/100km. These findings are the conclusion of segment testing only. Myself on the other hand filled my car to the brim also filling up a 5L spare can in the boot. Drove very sedately on Eco setting the entire time in a mix of town, urban and short highway distances always easing back slightly on the accelerator so as to utilise the battery more. When the car finally "died" on me, I limped about half a km on battery power only to the side of the road and put in the spare 5L taking note before driving off again of my total range which clocked up 1017 kilometres which works out at 5.3L/100km which in my humble opinion given the type of driving I did is a far more accurate figure than officially shown. Of course each identical model may vary.

My RAV4 Hybrid took nearly 12 months (almost to the day) by the time it got delivered in August 2021 (6 months ago) but it was worth the wait. Infotainment is its biggest downfall and what I'm most irritated about particularly since I'm a current owner of Kia & Hyundai who both excel when it comes to tech. I feel like the RAV4's infotainment is even a generation behind my 4-year old Hyundai. BUT... what really sold me is the Hybrid power train. I just love how it goes and it's so smooth despite only using 5.5L/100kms over 6 months of driving in 95% suburban stop-start traffic with very limited freeway/highway travel. I love the size of the interior and also a huge fan of the exterior design (very subjective, I know). Love your work, keep it up! 🍻

Thank you Paul for a great informative review. I have one of these vehicles and it's a pleasure to drive in comparison to the 2.0lt 2WD variant. Sadly Toyota decided, in their wisdom to save a few dollars, to remove the Centre Console tray found in the cheaper models, they have not included memory seat positions for 3 seperate drivers as found in the Cruiser Hybrid version nor does it have an 8 way adjustable front passenger seat again found in the Cruiser. All it has above the cheaper variants is the 'Trail' button, which you touched on Paul, yet the Edge Hybrid AWD costs another $3720 more than the fully specked Cruiser Hybrid AWD ??? It's also a real disappointment that Toyota have chosen not to include wireless Apple Car play. Other than that it's a great mid sized SUV.

True, the petrol edge makes some sense for those who may wish to do some very mild off road driving as it has torque vectoring and can send engine power to the rear unlike the hybrid versions. The only reason to buy the edge hybrid is if you really really liked the trim (doubtful) or perhaps if the wait time was significantly less than the cruiser version and you couldn't wait any longer.

Ev mode is pretty much non existent I found, every time I select it, it always says the hybrid battery not enough charge or some other excuse.
We tow a camper no worries, still heaps of overtaking power when required.
it’s got that slight siren noise which takes a little getting used to, probably generated by the electric motors going into regen , especially when slowing at the lights, gets the eyes looking for emergency vehicles.

Hi Paul thanks for another great review.
I've owned my 2020 RAV4 Hybrid cruiser for about 18 months and find it just a brilliant SUV, it drives and performs beautifully and the fuel economy is just excellent.
However I agree with you that the 2022 update should have brought a little more in upgrades in the infotainment area etc and I'll never understand why Toyota only put 1 USB port in the front and don't provide free map updates at least for the first few years of ownership
I would also like to know the advantages in buying an Edge over the Cruiser. I'm not a fan of the Edge's interior with all the orange bits and pieces.
There is no memory seat adjustment on the drivers side and no electric seat adjustment on the passenger side.
However overall in Hybrid form it is probably the best SUV currently on the market and (if you can) well worth the wait to get one.

hey bro! My father wants to buy a RAV 4 Hybrid with 218PS. Do u guys think its a car which will last long? Cause we wanted to buy a jeep at first, but jeep has no experience with plug in and hybrid. Toyota is such a company which offers high quality cars. Whats your opinion on the RAV 4? Will it be worth it and do u think it will last long without running to a garage everytime?

Trust me whoever see my edge interior and seats quality they all love it orange trims including me.
Edge 19" wheels ( ride quality is different for sure) and front grill quality is totally different and also design. That's it.
Cruiser make more sense if you can wait over 6 to 8 months.

They should have made the interior trims same as the exterior colour 😜 I do like the orange but it doesn’t go with the red exterior. I would have also like to have seen a colour palette similar to the FJ Cruiser with the bright colours (red, orange, yellow, cream etc) and two tone roof (white or black) would have been great too. This needs a min 10 inch info screen, better graphics for thr 7 inch screen in the dial and heads-up display. The pano roof would also have been nice

I know that. And was never expecting lower than 6lt/100. Nore was i complaining. I dont want a diesel, as spending 10 years in the automotive industry diesels should have staied in the commercial sector. Comparing to my old (then new) T31 Nissan Xtrail 2.5lt petrol. Same sort of driving we would get 10.2-11.5lt/100.
Would like a PHEV as around our town, its too small to benefit from the stopstart that the hybrid excel in. And a PHEV, we would run on electric in town, hybrid in city.

My wife has a 2022 Cruiser AWD with 4000km on the clock and averaging 5.6 litres per 100k. I cannot see the value of an Edge compared to the Cruiser. The Cruiser has an electric front passenger seat, heated and cooled and to me, a far nicer interior. Headlights are really good plus it drives and rides really well, I have more room in the front passenger seat than in my Prado. It is the first new car we have owned that has actually exceeded our expectations.

Im still using Hilux Surf 2005 its JDM version of 4Runner since 2009. Had Rav4 for a year, suspension broke within a year of use due to bad roads in my country. In my country over 2500cc engine has 500% import duty. Now Im confused whether getting the new Rav4 will be bad choice for me as I had bad experience in past. If I buy a new Ford Everest here it will cost me around $135000. Im 6 feet tall, cant use anything smaller due to that, I also have lumber disc issue, it was operated back in 2006. Is there any option which has good rugged suspension in mid sized SUV?

Have a 8/2020 Cruiser Hybrid with 30k. Long term economy is 5.4. It's quiet, roomy for its size and doesn't handle to bad on those high profile tyres. Servicing is seriously cheap. But a couple of things: Can't believe they continue to use the same infotainment unit with quite awful camera resolution. Not only is it worse than my previous 2017 Sportage but it's even worse than my old VF Commodore. Another irritating niggle is no automatic mirror folding. And finally, perhaps it's our age but we don't find it all that comfortable on long trips; certainly not as comfortable as our FG Ute. Overall though it's pretty ideal for what we want. If we were in the market for a new medium SUV I would take a serious look at the new Sportage in AWD diesel form. All things being equal I think I prefer it. It's just a matter of weather it's worth the extra litre every 100, the significantly higher service costs and if we want another diesel.
