The town of Joshimath in Uttarakhand state is sinking, with dramatic consequences for its residents. We try to find out what is causing the subsidence and discover the lessons it has for other communities set in fragile mountain environments.

a perfect example of bad preliminary studies of topography before starting a tunnelling project. what a difficult situation people have been put in by the carelessness of the government and contractors. its c crime against society
Tragic how the gov't's emergency response -- visits by officials, hotel rooms & stipends for food & supplies -- lasted only about a month. One family moved back to their damaged home when people at the hotel asked them to leave. Stories like this are necessary to keep accurate attention on the situation and the residents' voices, and to avoid the minimization already happening. Thank you, Scroll.

Thanks for this video report. We are deeply concerned about the miseries of the people of Joshimath. The authorities act injudiciously neglecting the ground reality of the area concerned. Planners never count the opinions of the experts who are really aware of the situation. I have been writing on these topics to make people aware of the gloomy state of our environment. But the people like to remain indifferent. We must have to ring the bell. Hope , the people will raise their voice. Let's keep shouting for the environment.

Beautiful documentary
It makes you wonder, before starting any project and that too in such an ecologically fragile area, does our government not do their due diligence. Is EIA just for show? If this is the kind of development government is hoping for, the cost the people and environment will be paying is enormous and disastrous.

It is never recommended to built such big houses and hotels in hills yet people do that and it wasn’t necessity but they did so to make money i hope people will learn to not built big houses in these areas learn from our ancestors
