Why Is Joshimath, India’s Himalayan Holy Town, Sinking?

In early 2023, buildings collapsed overnight in the holy Indian pilgrimage town of Joshimath, displacing thousands of locals from their homes.
Experts were not surprised. The sacred Himalayan town lies along a steep mountain slope, perched atop an unstable, shifting foundation including landslide debris. Rampant construction and climate change in recent years have strained this fragile base.
