  • In early 2023, buildings collapsed overnight in the holy Indian pilgrimage town of Joshimath, displacing thousands of locals from their homes.
Experts were not surprised. The sacred Himalayan town lies along a steep mountain slope, perched atop an unstable, shifting foundation including landslide debris. Rampant construction and climate change in recent years have strained this fragile base.
Joshimath’s precarious story serves as a dire warning to other mountain towns across the Himalayas.
