      To be fair I think Gus shouldn’t have given you flack for bringing a line into the sinkhole. Even if it just goes straight down, it never HURTS to have a line, does it? And if you haven’t dove it before, you may not know the schematics/layout of the sinkhole. You may not know if there’s other passages, or silt, or anything else. Better to be safe than sorry right? And I’m a cave diver.
      They tell us to be extra careful, so I don’t feel it’s fair to then talk smack if we are actually being extra careful 😂 but that’s just my thoughts. Like if someone wants to bring 4 lights into a cave instead of 3? Good for them! That’s extra safe. Not a reason to knock them. Now if they only brought 2 lights instead of 3, that’s when you point out their mistake…

    I have dove Hospital Hole hundreds of times. There is a sulphuric layer that stays between 70-80 feet or based on the river level. Above the layer is daylight. Dropping below it is complete darkness. This definitely not a cave or overhead environment. However, inexperienced divers can get disoriented in the dark if not bringing lights. Great review of this site Gus. These guys in their video hyped this up way beyond what it is.

    When I was living in Gainesville FL we visited many of these places and swam these amazing springs and rivers. We knew divers went down under while we swam then they disappeared! Just found your channel, and I’ve been addicted. Been diving since 2018, nowhere near your experience but I’m working on the steps to becoming a wreck diver. A lot of the youtube Diver’s I watched before I started diving that have some horrible habits/hype their videos up. Grabbing onto coral growth on wrecks/diving solo without the proper training/redundancy. Thank you for your honesty about the sport, you can definitely see your passion in your breakdown.

    That hydrogen sulphide layer can really mess you up depending on the concentration. Typically… it’s unlikely to come across high concentrations but when you do, if you have exposed skin for example, even a brief exposure will cause sunburn like effects. It can be incredibly dangerous

    Not sure what it was about this video in particular, I've watched a ton of your videos already this past week - but this was the first time I felt like maybe I could dive. I'm TERRIFIED of deep/dark water and/or water in which I cannot see my feet. It's always made diving a no-go for me. And I don't think I'd ever ever ever dive in deep open water. But....maybe I'll look into some low-level classes for training, see if it's for me. Maybe I could do things like Hospital Hole some day. Cave diving though, I'll leave that to you guys!

    Hi Gus!! Love the videos, just one correction on my side (my change to react about something I actually know about!). Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is a gas so if there was a H2S layer you would at least smell some rotting eggs at the surface. Also, in water H2S that interacts with water forms Sulfuric acid which is corrosive and very bad for dive gear or even could cause human tissue damage in the right concentration. They form in stagnant water due to bacteria decomposing organic matter, in which H2S is released as a byproduct. This is what happens in the human body, where bacteria decompose food that forms H2S and is therefore not produced by human cells. Anyway, open waters should not dive there if there is a H2S layer.

      Give yourself a retirement gift. Get your gear technically inspected; and I encourage you to find a very strict instructor to practice, train, and redo your certifications with before going on any trips.
      Our neighbor lost a dear friend who began to be overconfident after decades of diving without issue. It was a freak accident going through a shore break. Surfers found him, and tried CPR unsuccessfully. Our neighbor, his dive buddy, had gone back to the truck for something before starting the dive; but the friend decided not to wait. I'll never forget that. It was devastating to our neighbor.
      We all need the humility to recognize that our bodies change; and it never hurts to have experts put us through our paces, especially the safety rules. Your family is depending on you sticking around.

    This is why I love multilevel diving and wish more instructors put some extra time into it. To ascend slowly and even integrate the safety stop into it. I often experience its easier for divers with not much experience to dive around slowly than just hang at 6m because it hard for them to control their buoyancy. Also I encouraged everyone to learn frog kicks instead of flutter kicks. I agree silt isn't a problem because you still have a computer to see if you go up or down and in open water a compass. Sure it's nice if people don't kick up silt but if it happens just breath, stabilise your buoyancy and take it slow from there.

    Lake Phoenix thermocline is pretty wicked. It looks like there is a heavy fog on the ground but there is another 30 feet under it that is 20 degrees colder. Zero visibility last time I was up there passing through it. Literally and figuratively, pretty cool!

    Diving seems like a very fun hobby one of those things i probably couldn’t afford but interesting to learn about. That 10ft holder was too small for Mike no amount of money could get me to crawl through a hole that small let alone a submerged one.

    Not a diver but 1. i really dig the channel 2. You need to plant a goofy sign in a kickass cave just for giggs. So when you are talking about holding your breath while you ascend..is that in regards to boyls law?

  • @psycronizer
    @psycronizer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    29:26 yeah a good visual analogy for coming up to the surface after you've been down below 30 feet or more is simply slowly oh so slowly opening any carbonated drink, you see as the pressure is slowly decreased to surface pressure you see all that dissolved gas start to come out. At the tiny tiny scale deep inside your lungs, the Alveoli are the bits that get damaged as that gas literally forms ever bigger bubbles inside these little structures like tubes less then a millimeter and of course they are fragile and they can rupture, you'll know if you cough up some pinkish gunk that you fucked up...

    Quick question about the rope you talked about around 4:30. Depending on the depth of the dive wouldnt a rope, line, or something similar be a good idea just in case a diver becomes disoriented? A rope might help reorient themselves but also poses entanglement dangers.

    Hey Guss I'm am an open water diver and enjoy watching your videos. My wife had a question after hearing about having to do a mandatory deco stop. She asked if for some reason you were bleeding because you sliced your leg or arm and needed to surface could you blow through a mandatory deco stop. I informed her that you would need to tourniquet the limb and still do the stop and she goes to what if you dont have anything to Tourniquet with and I replied your SOL and would most likely die either way. But she refuses to accept that as an answer. Could you help me out and give your input into this question. Thank you. Again, love the content. Keep on Diving on.

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The answer is: "It depends" - If the Deco stop was like 10 minutes and I was bleeding profusely then I would probably risk it and go to the surface, I would probably be okay, just get on oxygen at the surface while they work on my wound...if my stop was like an hour then that's a huge problem. The question there is, do I skip a one hour deco stop and die of decompression sickness (likely) or do I stay down and lose consciousness due to blood loss and drown...such a horrible situation either way.
      The real question is, why are you and your wife having these horrible discussions a couple of days before Christmas guys? hahaha
      Here, I'll give you a couple new ones for you to argue over:
      1. If a batter hits the baseball so hard that it peels it and the center field catches the outer layer but the core of the baseball lands in the stands, is it a homerun?
      2. If you eat a mermaid, are you a cannibal?
      Thanks for tuning in and be safe on deco dives!

      Oh gosh. My love and respect for you as a content creator and diver has reached depths I never fathomed possible. I am prior active duty Marine and my wife sees fatal possibilities around every corner and wants to be prepared. In her head the chance of her running in to this situation in the future all though not likely but could happen. As she just told me "I am a paranoid bitch." Her words not, always mine. Thank you again for the quick and informative response. Dive on.
