@@davelowesky8054 Dude, Gus is awesome. This channel and its information will save people's lives by correcting misinformation on all levels. People can't easily go to space, and people can't easily build buildings or bridges, however it is very easy for the average person to jump into a deep water cave or cavern. So these corrective reaction videos can and will and probably have saved lives. He is not pausing the video to talk just to be a dick, he is doing it so people will have the correct professional information and don't just jump in with their "flippers" and get themselves killed.

Australian certified cave diver here, hi! Shaft's been closed for a while so I haven't been able to dive it, but you are correct, you get lowered down and then your gear comes down, and as far as I understand, it is at all times big enough for two divers to turn around next to each other. The pictures he's using while talking about the shaft though are from Kilsby's sinkhole

My father drowned less than 3 meters away from the shore, diving is definitely not what I would be doing but I love the channel, the information is just so in depth, so interesting and gives me digital diving experience.

I hate to have to even ask a question like this but how does one drown 3 meeters away from shore? I don't even plan on diving but I've been 3 meters away from shore before and I'd sort of like to know so I don't accidentally kill myself

Absolutely! Knowing that your time is slowly running out is very tough to deal with without panic setting in.

Any accident underwater can cause panic, I have personally paniced less than 30 feet under, the trick is just to stay calm and realize whats wrong, and plan what youre going to do about it, let your partners know if possible
That’s because it’s completely idiotic to trust not only yourself, but your equipment and a dive buddy as well. May too many variables.

I couldn't help but remember a line from "Shadow Divers" when the guy mentioned hallucinations from nitrogen narcosis. They said, "When the lobsters start talking to you, its time to go home." I believe they were diving around 200 feet, but I cant recall what gas they were diving. I'm not a tech or cave diver...yet. Anyways, if you haven't read it, it is a great book about identifying a sub found off the coast of NJ in the 90s.

Dolphins and whales and seals have flippers. Those are mammals underwater. A scuba diver is also a mammal underwater, so saying “flipper” is a direct correlation

Only came across this channel yesterday & love it. Any sort of diving has always caused anxiety since I nearly drowned aged 12 & can't even put my head under water now but glad these guys are showing it's not as dangerous as the horror stories that are told.

There was a death in Devil's Den around 1995, give or take. Lamar Hires was part of the recovery.
It was, as I recall, a 15-year-old open water student going solo after his class ended. He somehow managed to swim into one of cracks in the limestone and take a turn into an extremely narrow side crevice and got wedged there and ran out of gas.

Maybe they used language most people could understand. I get it... The way to teach is to not have low expectations but just saying I can't stand people who think everyone else is dumb.

I think people get confused about blue hole, it was an above ground cave then ocean rose and the top collapsed and gives it the hole and arch. But I watched a documentary about a diver trying to figure out why so many deaths occurred like inexperience or the terrain ( getting confused which was is up) and narcosis. It was inexperience, you rent a tank without experience and people go the distance not knowing the rented tank of gas isn’t enough.
Interesting. Thanks for the info! Makes sense, people that don't know what they're doing die in extreme situations like that just going in recklessly. That's a theme to most of the diver reacts videos: People that don't know what they're doing and don't have the appropriate skills or gear end up in bad situations. It CAN happen to anyone but if you take the appropriate steps and stuff then it's very unlikely you die or get hurt it feels like.

I think I have seen it. An additional aspect was that the passage underneath the arch is lengthy and while inviting it takes much longer to complete. Many people reach the depth unprepared with too small air for the depth in the first place.

The shot from the Blue Hole in the Red Sea that you thought may have been a cavern is actually a large archway which is what gets most people into trouble. Due to the good visibility and you can see the light coming through from the other side, some divers misjudge the distance and run out of air. Really enjoying your videos. Thanks

I have been caving (Dry caving) for well over a decade, and I never actually knew the difference between cavern and cave. Thanks for that, can't believe I never knew that, I just thought caverns were caves with a bigger entrance. In the UK we must name them wrong, as Mossdale is called Mossdale caverns, where it's many miles long, daylight don't get in more than 10ft, the entrance is narrow. I like my crawly and tight dry caves, some of it's pretty gnarly, but I don't think I could ever complete that training, I get bloody nervous when I have to hold my breath for a 1 - 2m long free dive in Swildons hole.
I loved Swildons always fun.
Gus is a non-native speaker. Those of us born speaking English know it’s a messed-up language where “cavern” and “cave” can be interchangeable, because they have multiple definitions.

man… i’ve never dived a day in my life, let alone cave dived. but i’d absolutely love to do it. not only would I love to do the training, but I think it’d be super rad to just explore places under water.
there’s only one big problem. I live in Ohio. we don’t have much to offer in the way of diving or cave exploring.

Can you do a video on the requirements to become a cave diver or get certified in cave diving? It's definitely something I'd want to do but I have absolutely no diving experience or know really anything about it. I'm currently in Oregon so I know I'd probably have to move somewhere more suited to it but maybe not? LOVE your videos!

Devils Den was my third ever dive site after I got my open water cert. The only thing we did was swim laps around the perimeter. With the rocks and the different levels, it provided some awesome buoyancy control practice for me as a beginner diver. If you wanted, you could shimmy into the crevices and I think you could reach 40’, but hanging in the open water I ranged comfortably between 15’ and 25’ deep.
I found you through Mr.Ballen and Caveman Hikes' channels under the suggestions. Why am I just NOW finding these treasures of videos and their narrators?
BTW, never gone SCUBA diving and don't plan to, however I know two certified instructors and I worked in their shop for a short bit. The amount I learned of what to do and not to do during diving was insane and I still remember it.

You should do a video of the safest cave dive locations ! I’d love a 30 foot deep cave which is completely controlled
Go to a certification class, they'll take you somewhere like that. It would be irresponsible for him to make a video like that.
If you go to Tulum Mexico, there’s really amazing caverns that satisfy that itch- I recommend calling the place CenotExperience. You can do guided cavern tours for Dos Ojos, The Pit, which are 2 safe but awesome ones I went to. I can’t speak for others but during both of those I never felt in danger. They’re beautiful, have ample room to maneuver around, and there’s very little silt (although you still should use good buoyancy and trim for many reasons). And the tour guides know exactly where to go and are cave certified so as long as you follow them you’re good to go. Again I would recommend playing it safe and not doing caves which have a good amount of silt, or tight restrictions, or a lot of random passageways... but The Pit and Dos Ojos are pretty much unfuck-up-able

Although not a cave, you can dive at Bonne Terre Mine in Bonne Terre, Missouri as an Open Water diver. It is a guided dive and very safe and controlled. You can also do your open water certification there.
Aw man I’d loved to have heard the explanation on partial pressure and gas exchange at depth. I’m studying medicine and we just learnt about pp and the respiratory system, it seems so interesting. Very cool video anyway tho

When I was training to be a fire fighter our instructor blindfolded us had us crawling around to simulate a smokey building and he would walk around and turn our cylinders off or unplug our regulator and we would have to solve the problem without taking our masks off. It was a lot of fun super challenging and you had to stay calm when your air cut out

It's all good 21:35 . I ended up adjusting the video speed to 0.5x to listen your explanation about partial pressure in gas at depth.
Also the open water padi course is 6 days long , you have your in person class/zoom session for 2 days then your pool session for 2 days then 2 days diving in the open ocean
Actually, as a PADI Dive Master who has assisted with many dive classes, the length of the course is not set up by the number of days or hours but the successful completion of both cognitive and psychomotor objectives. The cognitive portion or 'classroom' portion can be conducted either face-to-face (or over zoom) in a classrtoom or on the internet which is self-paced. The psychomotor is broken into two sections, the first is in a controlled environment, which is usually a pool or shallow area in open water. Once the student diver is able to coimplete all of the psychomotor skills satisfactorially and confidentally, and the instructor believes the student diver is capable of performing the psychomotor skills in open water then they move to a lake or the ocean where they can take the student diver through the psychomotor skills and have them conduct four to five open water dives to demonstrate their ability to dive safely. PADI also requires a demonstration by the student diver of being able to navigate through the water by using their compass and/or by recognizing terrain features in the water. I've seen many student divers who were able to complete both portions within three days and I've seen others who took longer.

@Dive Talk great channel, love the way you correct the terminology on things like cave verses cavern not a diver myself though my dad is Certified for all including caves so alot of the stuff you talk about when cave diving is familiar. I do the same thing when people say snakes are "poisonous" it always burns me the confusion between the words "venom" and "poison" that are recklessly thrown about through the public lol. When I hear someone call a snake poisonous I usually say something to the lines of "I don't know maybe the garlic and salt neutralized the poison the last time I ate rattlesnake, but I'm fine!" lol.
I am scared shitless over anything deeper than a pool, but here I am like 2hrs later, still watching this channel.

Does trimix being mixed to make oxygen intake slower when the gasses are more dense deep, does that mean the closer you get to the surface the less oxygen youre getting? Are you using multiple bottles and then using the trimix only when your in the dangerzone?
It depends on the mix, but yes!

Devils den sounds perfect for me for my first cave dive... once I get to that point. I will want a beginner cave to start with. My goal is to be cave certified, but still have training to get there. It looks just beautiful.
The ratio has to be taken into account when looking at these- like jacobs well, 8 deaths. Ok, 8 people have died (most stories i know from their deaths involved not being trained or following the rules) but think of how many come to jacobs well every year. The number of travelers exploring there would make the death rate seem tiny. I dont consider it a cave diving death rate when its accidents that happened based off people doing what they shouldn't do (not trained, don't have what they need, don't follow the rules ect) I consider that "death by misadventure". Its such a popular spot, it gets so many people and divers. Its the same thing as when they say its safer to fly than to drive a car, its all about the ratio of people doing it.

The thing about breathing in water just a few seconds after you run out of air is veeery known. I have never scuba dived, but I was kayaking on my middle school trip. At one point we were suppose to slide down a weir (a declining plane between two levels of water - the dam and the rest of the river). However the water was quite wild after several days of raining and the vortices turned me upside down. The problem was I was wearing a kayaking skirt, so I was firmly attached to the kayjak, being upside down, panicking. The only training we received was to find the tip of the skirt, pull, and you are free. Unfortunately being upside down panicking, the skirt might have been on the moon, I had no idea where up or down, left or right is. I couldnt put my head above water to breathe in. Luckily the teachers below the weir were there ready to save us, unfortunately my "saviour" was a tiny female who didnt have the strenght to turn me back up or pull the skirt. It took her about 10s to turn me just so I could get my head above water, already convulsing and about 1 second away from breathing in water (the total time under water was only 15-20s, and I know I can hold my breath for 60s, but somehow when panicking you feel out of air almost immediately). Omg I thought I am gonna die. From that moment on I know what true panic is, and how powerless people are against it. That is why I will probably never scuba dive, because I am the prime person who at the sign of any trouble would totally panic, and either drowned or bailed to the surface too quickly and ripped my lungs out. Because "out of air under water" is an instant panic onset for me, I cant imagine diving deeper than 40-50 feet.
He didn’t even explain why some of them are actually dangerous the blue hole is dangerous because the top is salt water and the bottom is freshwater and you weight differently for each of them some inexperienced divers try to go too deep and end up sinking very fast to the bottom on a normal air tank

Cave diving IS dangerous. If your certified it’s relatively safe as long as you follow protocol, but most people aren’t certified and don’t even know protocol. Just because one is properly trained to mitigate the danger doesn’t mean it’s not present.
