I love what they've done with the voice acting. They make the necrons speak pure English, and the "humans" speak so binary that it's alien
It's also quite lore-accurate, since (I believe) Necrons communicate using this, understandable-by-all signal wave or something. And, uh... well, Cant Mechanicus xD

I'm still deeply in love with If the Emperor had text to speech's version of the mechanicus
I think it was intentional design. Like since the Mechanicus is so detached from what we currently consider human, they dont speak remotely english or “human.”
But Necrons seem more human due to them showing at least some emotion outside of just text. They connect more with the player than the robots you play as. Even if they have less text and dialogue. (Except the Scaevola, shes pretty damn cool)
the necrons are machines, who wish they weren't, the mechanicus are humans, who wish they weren't

Well, with all the neural implants at the disposal of the Mechanicus, I'd be worried if they didn't have something to improve their own soldiers' accuracy.
My favorite part of Mechanicus is that just when you get used to the binary hissing of your robuddies and have settled in, you hear a necron enemy talk to you in perfect English and it freaks you out nearly as much as it freaks the AdMech. It's *great*.

I also love the implication that the sounds your crew makes hasn't been random gibberish. That's how they actually talk.
It's a fantastic nod to how the admech strive to be more machine while necrons want to reclaim their 'humanity'... uh, necromanity?

Worst part, the necron overlord is speaking high gothic. Imagine if the Terminator started telling you exactly how worthless you flesh bags are in perfect Latin. High gothic is so much worse to hear then low gothic.

@Chris Hansen Eldritch has definitions outside of Lovecraft. It means alien, strange, or foreign.
They don't speak anything Eldritch. All the English is translated into binary. Sound blips equal one, no sound equals zero.

I love the fact that the Mechanicus is a straight up heretical organization in the Imperium and the only reason they haven't been wiped out is because whenever the question of persecuting them comes up it's just met with a big "I'd like to see you try"
The one proof that the Imperium is capable of compromise.

They also produce/maintain/restore the big clunky mechanical things with guns (as well as the guns themselves) that the Imperium uses to do Imperium things so their heresy is tolerated as it is essential. It is like the mutants of the Navigator Houses. The Imperium is nothing but hypocritical in the 40k millennium.

I understand the reason behind turning them into SPESS tomb kings...but i must confess, i liked the older lore of edgy-terminator/skynet faction.

@Fourthspartan56 cyborgs are beings of flesh and blood whose flesh and blood slowly but surely is replaced by mechanical implants and such, but keeping their core as a living creature. Without that core they are empty useless shells. Extent of that transformation is quite beautifully explored on in "Ghost in the shell" - which core theme is where humanity ends and machine starts if most if not all of your body is artificial, but mind is that of a human.

What I love is the mechanicus have robotoized voices. The necrons have humanistic voices. The mechanicus tossed their humanity away willingly, while the necrons lost theirs in bonds. But, we "hear" who has kept their true origins true. The mechanicus are no longer human despite having souls, and the necrons are still necrontyr despite their lack of souls.

As a Necron player I would _love_ a game mode or mod or something that lets you play as them since all the resources are there already. Maybe a tomb tower defense? Keep those damn kids off my lawn!
A tower defense game with waves of AdMechs trying to steal your stuff is a genius idea.

I pray the Omnissiah, for this game needs a sequel. It still has a ton of potential, both gameplay and lore wise. There could be a new threat in a form of dark mechanicus and their demonic lawnmowers. Or you could clash with loyal factions in pursuit of STC or some other tech. This happens at least once or twice a week in 40K.
Or even just using this system but as a different faction, like having Tau equip different drones and suits throughout a campaign against Orks and/or Tyranids

could be a Total War-esque rts with you ordering around hordes of not-zerglings alongside bigger dudes like Carnifexes, or in a similar turn-based vein to Mechanicus
A mechanicus style game for other fsctions in the Imperium would be great.
Imagine an Imperial Guard game that's built like classic xcom (cover, aiming, permadeath, all soldiers are technically expendable)

12:07 A thing I noticed on my playthrough was that you could scan AND destroy the Necron computers, so I ended up specializing one of my priests to do just that. I ended up making a minigame out of how close to 0 I could leave each mission while still getting everything like the grubby Magos I was meant to be.
Yeah the explorator was good for that due to all his movement and melee to destroy terminals in 1 hit
Mechanicus feels like a passion project. It's an absolute gem, doubly so for fans of 40k.

@@Criomorph Mechanicum prayers are often repair procedures. Their language is basically a programming language to begin with.
Basically, they repair by rote and procedure without necessarily understanding exactly whats going on.

I made a titan from parts, I ordered on wish.
Weirdly enough, I've found that having a dedicated melee tech-priest around is pretty useful. Not on every mission of course, but in the tomb of Ubjao and in Lord Ubjao's boss fight specifically, having a Radioshack man coked out on damage buffs with a machine-spirited power axe went very nicely. Not the best fit for every situation, but the right tool for the job.
Not to mention the ability to ignore attacks of opportunity and autoscan in melee, where you can position him to tag three targets at once so they can't shoot without getting smacked first.
The move speed alone is a massive boon because you can run him between all the terminals for extra blackstone/alert regression.
A pure ranged techpriest is also pretty useful since there are many different guns in the game. With all these damage buffs even basic ranged weapons can do a decent amount of damage.
@@517342 the skill where you fill up your cognition gauge is gold. You can just rush the guy and with buffs and troops he's gone in 2 turns no matter what weapons you chose to have with you.
I had a scout/melee techpriest, he dual-wielded the guns that reveal stats, had the sonic detector that also revealed stats in an area, he moved the fastest of all my priests, and his axe was the best free (no CP required) available
definitely very useful at times
This just shows how Sound and Music can make a game. Its especially important in all Warhammer 40k game. if the guns and units don't feel like they have weight to them or the guns don't sound like they have a lot of impact it can break the game. Its the reason i couldn't get in to Space Hulk: Deathwing. out of all of the games problems. The sounds of the Terminators don't sound very terminator like.

@Jack Adams ..... orks are the essence of warhammer... some would infact say that the orks are the unwitting architects... and the entirety of warhammer 40k was originally just a peaceful setting where war consisted of just avoiding each other or not giving a helping hand when asked to... then .... some "brainboys" thought creating a psychic race that individually was not that strong, but collectively and nearly unstoabable of reproducing on a cellular constant level was a good idea... sad they never finished working on their project.. and thus warhammer 40k

I have seen that in the latest update to this game, "the bug" has been fixed apparently:
Fixed: Line weapons not hitting targets. This one was a real tough cookie to uncover. This was truly a greater demon in the source code. Our greatest apologies for the delay in slaying this mighty beast.

Sounds like the developers found the right Tech Priest for the job.
The other big one was canoptek spiders never ending their turn and softocking the game.
Superannoying while it lasted but at least sometimes you could rush them on the first turn before they act.

I put in headphones while playing this on Switch for the first time so that I wouldn’t wake my wife up. Man was that ever a good decision. The sound design in this game is fucking unbelievable. Like it’s literally ear porn. I could just listen to someone play it without any context, it’s just amazing

I am also not a big fan of fantasy settings were humanity dominates the universe just because the authors wants to create a "correlation" with the readers/watchers. The idea of mankind conquering the galaxy sounds ridiculous, the high fantasy setting is even more exaggerated, humans surviving in a land of dragons and other fantastical monsters... so these gimmicks feels forced to me (Steven Erikson spoiled my tastes). Warhammer 40k clearly aggrandize the human factions, the entire universe revolves around our species, that is a gullible concept in my pov
@@RRRRRRRRR33 The humans are the point of view characters yes, but they're not the "Good Guys". There are no good guys in 41st millennium. Humans are struggling from infighting, paranoia, xenophobia and the general consequences of their own hubris. It's a completely ridiculous setting and well worth looking into, there's a faction for everyone I think.

that and all the hidden gachi. He's been going a bit light on the actual spanks and stuff lately, but Necron Aniki was a nice touch.
This game was a gem. The music alone got me hooked and I must have watched the opening title drop a few dozen times cause I loved the opening dialogue. I played through several times because you could do so many unique difficulties and styles and the units and guns were fun. My last play through I did a kind of 'horde' difficulty where enemy health was halved but spawns and numbers were up 200%. It was an absolute blast.
Seriously your intro is one of the best 40k fanimations ever, that OST so impactful with the art.

Here's a very easily missable detail: the reason you strat with nothing is actually explained... During the warp travel.
You can see a whole lot of errors and warnings pop up. They actually tell you about hull breaches, incursions and the fact that a lot of equipment (and fuel) got vented into the warp.

My issue with is that the focal point is *in front of but not including* the camera's actual pivot point, so it takes five inputs to zoom in on something and see it clearly, instead of just one

So I saw this video when it first came out. I usually never play tactical games, and I literally never played a warhammer game. But DAMN the art direction was amazing and that intro sold me, so I bought it. It’s great. Really truly appreciate how much you can augment the literal game.
I love everything about this game's audio. Rare is the game that I want to play mostly to listen.

@@memes_the_dna_of_the_soul5487 Beam type weapons wouldn't fire occasionally at your current angle, so you have to waste a step or two to fire beam weapons at your intended target.
Gotta say, I came back to this video by chance, and it dropped me in at the sound design part for some reason, and hearing the sounds of this game instantly compelled me to go back and purge those vile xenos all over again. The soundtrack of this game is fucking fantastic, and the opening cinematic gives me chills and fills me with awe from just the mere presence of the thought of it.
"[[Error]] Damn not found." Is probably one of my new favorite lines. Fantastic stuff.

Just saw your review and it's very, very good (as your other reviews are). There are 3.3k comments, so perhaps it's been answered, but regarding the "sound issue" when the Magi speak, at first I thought it was a bug or something, but rapidly realized the devs put so much vare to detail in this game, that they talk in Techna-Lingua. This game is so awesome!
4:42 Pro tip: from what I have learned playing the game the glyphs all have a set function.
They don’t change or randomize. The rune on the left there heals always and the rune on the right gives blackstone always.
There are two runes that give blackstone. One I think gives more.
I fell in love with this game when I heard the deep bass of Faustinius' audio fill up my headphones. Half the reason to play the game is to just subject yourself to as much ear porn as possible.

I bought this after your review. You're right that multi-classing and Cognition management makes your Priests really OP. I didn't even bother levelling up a group of 6... just 4. A melee specialist that also sucks up all the cognition from his target before killing them. The one that buffs minions (but it was almost always just the Robot). The one that buffs the other Priests, he also got a refractor shield. And a ranged specialist with the singularity gun. All of them can heal themselves regardless.
By the time the Awakening meter was at 75%, I was able to finish most missions with 0 or 1% Awakening. I don't think you mentioned that Priests can steal Blackstone from those panels, but they can also be destroyed afterwards to reduce Awakening anyway. So between almost every Priest able to fill the Cognition bar, a Canticle that fills the Cognition bar, a Priest ability that gives me a free Canticle use (so long as it's not expended), every Priest can lower the cost of their next ability or weapon by 2, and almost all of them could suck all the cognition from a target instead of one... well, most battles were over before the Necrons even got a turn. Beam weapons got fixed too, so I could kill them before they saw me. It definitely gets really OP by the end.
Only bosses gave me a run for my money, but only because their arenas are large. I also took Canticles that lowered or ignored armor, so it was easy to nuke the bosses into oblivion.
