The aesthetic of this series scratches my urban fantasy itch so well. I'm a writer, and when they were talking about the different styles used to differentiate between each medium (New York, Brakebills, and Fillory), I was nodding along like yissss. Very good show.
I love how they make things happen practically on set with spells. That has got to be a huge help to the actors. It can be so awkward to rely on animation effects and could take multiple takes to shake off the awkwardness and uncertainty to what it looks like. So to actually make explosions and light flashes happen while the actor is in there doing the scene, has got to give some relief from that and let the actors just act without overthinking.
Yeah, count me in. I dismissed it at first as a CW style Potter knockoff but with angsty millennials (not a draw for me). I started it on Netflix recently looking for something new to watch and got hooked fairly quickly. It actually feels like the natural modern extension of Buffy and Angel but more adult and creative at the same time. This is a show that gives television a reason to exist.
I love the way the writers and actors speak about magic as a concept, and the real-world implications. They all seem to have a fantastic grasp on the characters as well, and what they mentioned about the 'coming-of-age' period relatively late in life, and how pain is such a core element in this world really reminds me of why I love the show so much. It has both universal and very personal themes. Especially for a college student who grew up on Narnia/Harry Potter and was rudely thrust into real life after school, lmao
honestly I am not surprised to learn most spells are as real/physical as possible, it explains why its so easy to enjoy this show, why it feels so plausible. I love what I have seen of The Magicians so far, as a newer fan, and I can't wait for more.
Elora And Khan before the flood, before the red haired giants of North America, there were gods and we are the leftovers of there experiments. The grand cosmic cycle repeats, Zachariah Sitchin wrote fantastic books based from ancient sumerian texts.

This show I VERY UNDERRATED and I'm low-key okay with it. Because not everyone will understand the depths of the story and feelings. The way actors project it, is mind blowing. AND I WANT TO KEEP TO TO MYSELF, feel me?
Just binged season 1 to 3 for the past 2 weeks. Margo, Penny and Julia are my favourites! Can't wait for the new season now that things kinda been reset.
Yes!!! Same here! Margo will always be my "High King." And Julia... I am just in love with that beautiful woman. I hope her divinity isn't gone for good and she can grow her powers back over time.

It’s funny at the beginning she describes it as Harry Potter and narnia bc that’s exactly how I have described it, only it’s so much more than those two. With that said I need to read the books. But I absolutely have loved this show since I stumbled across it
So sad the ratings dropped so much and they had to cancel it :( In the beginning I hated it because it felt like a knock off Harry Potter but as it progressed and got darker it developed it's own personality. I loved it. I'm re-watching it on Netflix.
Yeah the Magicians really transcends what is needed to be said and taught while utilizing a fantasy show. Once each character went through a VERY painful experience they became stronger like "the beast" in a way. *Spoiler* Like when Julia got raped by the god and witnessed all her friends get brutally killed, not only did she lose a piece of herself but she also overcame and rekindled a lot of the relationships she originally lost. She could potentially be the strongest magician, next to Allison, and the fact that she got rejected by Brakebills makes her even stronger in that sense. Allison losing her brother and in a way her life strengthened her use of magic. Eliot being trapped in Fillory and not being able to live the life he wanted helped him grow, by forcing him to genuinely care about others and become a a great leader and Margo giving up a piece of herself influenced her to not be as prideful as she once was (even though she is queenXD). I can go on with each character but the testament to pain is something that stuck with me throughout this show.
I like to think of it as you can't have magic without pain. I think that's why I love it so much because my whole life has been painful. Look at Julia in season 3. Magic is gone she has suffered the most and has the greatest magic.
The producers scarf tho. haha Really is the best show. I fcking love it. That Day in the life episode with Q and Elliot. That one made me cry man. It's all just so good. Cannot wait for another season.
I read the books first, in 2015. Kind of liked them, but not as much as I wanted to. Somehow or other I came across a reference to this series and binge watched. What they did adapting the source material was brilliant. Took a lot of liberties, but in the vast majority of cases they changes the made are improvements.
Not sure what took me so lomg. But im finally giving this beautiful show a shot and im HOOKED. Currently om season 2 ep 14. Im terrinle for loving spoilers but i want see how the actors actually get along too haha im odd
Reading this comment makes me think of how in my mind what you just pointed out it’s an excellent metaphor for money. At least to some observers. Learning about the existence of and then finding out what you’ll do to obtain it.
I loved that show, almost stopped because of Alice who is such a caricature of a smart girl, she made her a simpleton dressed like a librarian in a porn, but I fell in love with the Margo&Eliot's duo and I really miss them now it's over.
i feel like another reason its so easy to grasp is they make it easy for the magicians to feel real. They include things we know as mystical (unicorns, aztecs, jin, greek mythology, norse mythology, hell even harry potter and dungeons and dragons are constantly mentioned in the show). It shows average people with problems find this whole new world and all these introverted weirdos banding together and becoming friends and hurting, suffering, being happy, being high, being in love. It makes it clear they aren't the strongest shit out their. The show shows them being people in a world of magic and not wizards. That's what makes it so real.
Daniel Valencia the guy who plays Quentin is a big fan of the books and so is the red headed producer woman. I know from a sdcc that most of them read at least some of the source material.

Filming technique called dutch angles. It works to make it apparent to the viewer when they are in the neitherlands. Used in a really interesting way
@@CyBOXbeatbox I was just about to comment that. Dutch angle / dutch tilt is used to make something look "off" or unnatural. You know something isn't quite right.
That was used plenty during the 1960's Batman tv series.

How to create a monster; take a child and abuse, manipulate and humiliate. Then give that child power.
Omg is that what Quentin's laugh would sound like? I literally don't think the character has ever laughed
Quentin, to me, is basically Droopy the dog with ADHD. Always depressed and yet has a nervous, spastic energy.
