Thanks for the helpful video. I'm going to Japan in april and was researching tattoo friendly spots or private onsens since i have full sleeve tattoos.
There are more and more spots to find tattoo friendly options, but I always look it up in advance. Hi! Love your video. I just discovered Tenzan onsen on line but the page is only in japanese. Did you book time for onsen before getting there, or did you just show up? I would love to go there and the food looks amazing!
I 100% recommend going! They do not accept reservations. I just showed up and outside at the bottom of the stairs there is a machine where you buy your entrance ticket. They you take that ticket into the building, put you shoes in a locker, show them the ticket, they will ask if you need to buy a towel, if you don't already have one you need to purchase one (a tiny hand towel, not a bath towel). One note about tattoos from their website is that they say no groups of people who are tattooed, so if there are multiple of you, perhaps stagger your entrance and quietly enjoy the onsen once inside. Their website says repetitively that the onsen is for health not for socializing. Enjoy! Feel free to let me know how you like it! :) Ganbattene!
How did you get in with tattoos? Do they ask up front?
I only attend onsens that I have done research on in advance and found that they are ok with tattoos. There are a lot of good websites that have lists and then you can double check by going the the onsen's website and reading their rules and their FAQs.
I live in Japan with tattoos you just need to know the places it's not a big deal as people make it seen.
