Travel Nuggets Crunch Japan | Miyajima

Welcome friends, we made it to Miyajima!!
Today we're diving into the wonders of Itsukishima, popularly known and Miyajima.
First up, we took the ferry from Hiroshima to Miyajima via Miyajimaguchi. The short ferry ride offers stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea and a first glimpse of the iconic Itsukushima Shrine’s torii gate!
Upon arrival, we naturally headed to the famous Itsukushima Shrine to start the day. This Shinto shrine is renowned for its “floating” torii gate, which appears to float on the water during high tide.
Next, we visited the Senjokaku Pavilion, also known as the Hall of One Thousand Tatami Mats. This massive, open-air hall was originally intended to be a library of Buddhist sutras. It’s a serene space with incredible views of the surrounding area and the torii gate. Nearby, we found the Five-Story Pagoda. Japan has a funny way of having amazing traditional buildings around every corner!
We then took the Miyajima Ropeway up to Mount Misen. The ropeway ride offers breathtaking views of the island forest, but no sea views for us! At the top, we embarked on a rainy hike, truly other-worldly. It was filled with ancient temples, wild deer, and panoramic vistas. The lack of umbrellas and hats made this journey doubly rewarding as we reached the atmospheric Buddhist temples.
After our hike, we wandered through the charming streets of Miyajima, filled with quaint shops and local eateries. We tried some of the island’s famous treats, like mozzarella curry bread, and bought some engraved chop sticks!
Having earned our rest, we refreshed ourselves with some local Miyajima brewery beer. It's surprisingly salty, yet unique and refreshing, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. Em's eel went down a treat too!
