How to de-graft Cacti - Pereskiopsis Edition - Practical Demonstrations

  • Hi everyone!
    In the second installment of this video series we dive into the practical element of de-grafting cacti from Pereskiopsis.
    De-grafting from Pereskiopsis is by far the most challenging of all cactus de-grafts and requires particular attention to where and what you are cutting.
    If you have not watched the first installment of this series I would recommend watching that first as this video will make more sense.
    Please also keep in mind that de-grafting cacti does not guarantee success, sometimes they just don't make it.
    There will of course be different opinions and thoughts on this subject as there is with all other elements of growing cacti, this is just the method that I use.
    Hope you find the video useful, thank you for watching & of course........
    HAPPY GARDENING!

    Hi, thanks for sharing the video. My simple tip for removing pereskiopsis from deep inside of the scion is to use tools for food carving. You can find many different tools for different applications, including scooping out circular holes in plants flesh.

    This is true, when you de-graft from pereskiopsis leave the foundation of the scion on the pereskiopsis, it wil shoot pups!

  • @OffGridInvestor
    @OffGridInvestor 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I messaged you a few weeks ago on ebay and you sent me 5 pereskiopsis which have sibce started sprouting leaves. I remember you said you no longer use it. I can see why now. However I think they'll still be good for columnar cacti, because you can just cut higher with a knife until your past the union/graft joint. I will keep this in mind. Recently grafted 5 trichocereus to a montrose peruvian apple and wasn't sanitising the blade and a few of the trichos were rotting (hence the grafting). Then we had cold humid weather. The montrose has some rotting which I tried cleaning up today when I took all the tape off the grafts. They're all holding well but we will have to see about the rotting

      Hey!
      Glad they're growing well for you.
      Peres is a fantastic stock, not much matches it for speed but it does have it's disadvantages.
      De-grafting can be challenging but more so, I got sick and tired of it biting me! hahahaha

      @@87walker Hey there, so I grafted a few lophophora cultivars onto pereskiopsis and came across your degrafting guide. I was wondering if you could comment on what the success rate is for re-rooting degrafts based on your experience. I am having second thoughts if maybe I should have used permanent stock for mine now. Thanks!

    Woah! The difference between seed-grown and grafted cacti! 😱 The grafted one reminded me of Popeye whenever he took spinach. 😂 How long does it take for a de-grafted cactus to look more normal comparative to its seed-grown counterpart? I will always prefer the look of a healthy seed grown cactus. Thank you for sharing generous info. 👍 Keep safe and well. 🙏

    • @87walker
      @87walker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! Usually within a season or two it will be difficult if not impossible to distinguish between grafted and seed grown plants, the issue with pereskiopsis is it's tendency to make scions pup prolifically which is unnatural looking for cacti that generally don't offset much (Lophophora is a perfect example) if you can reduce down to a single head then the drying and rooting process will help normalise the appearance due to moisture loss. Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!

      87walker i’ve seen some growers use Harrisia jusbertii for their stock. It looks a bit sturdier than the very thin Pereskiopsis. 😊 thank you for the generous info shared. 🥰

    Best degrafting video Ive seen. Im wondering though, if you did cut the plant in half to degraft, would the bottom half (still attached to the pere) rapidly grow several new heads that could easily be removed without worries of the pere being attached to them? Of course the top would be set back quite a bit, but not lost. Could be more productive in the long run, but hurt in the short term?

    • @87walker
      @87walker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In theory yes that will work however the issue is that many cacti if cut in half to degraft will not survive the catastrophic moisture loss.
      Perfectly fine practice for column cacti but globular (round) not so much.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen the cinnamon debate circle the internet many times over the years.
      I've never used it myself but if I were going to, I would use real cinnamon (ceylon) and not the stuff found in grocery stores.
      The powder I use works well.

  • @JamesEndo1
    @JamesEndo1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Always enjoy your videos. I thought graft to grow faster, bigger, but then you separate all pups. I want the big clumps! Can we just degraft and replant. Is it a problem if we replant with little pereskiopsis attached? I guess it's the fast lazy way!!! Thanks.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short stock method is widely used in the cactus community, I am not personally a fan of it but many do this succsfully.
      Quite often my goal with grafting is to create a specimen piece that will eventually grow on own roots, too many pups (depending on variety) doesn't look natural.
