Love the video, love the grow set up and love the technique with the razor blade. I just did a video on grafting trichos to localish prickly pear cactus. How big can those trichos get before the become unstable? I have one pad the had 4 grafts on it and they're starting to get too big I think. You inspired me to try the pereskiopsis grafts next. I have 11 new shoots that rooted and have new growth, and another 10 that just went into pots and under the lights.

Are you aware that the bottom half of the seedlings that you chucked away can be grafted too? With the root end sticking up and the cut end down on the Pere just like you do with the top half. It works and doubles your chances per seedling! Best of luck and thanks very much for your informative video.

I've read of people using Optunia, or Stapelia Gigantea as root stock, but the pereskiopsis is so nice for seedlings because the grafting is pretty straight forward with the geometries involved!
How much faster do grafted cacti grow if it's an echinopsis that generally is fast growing anyway? I've never done grafting yet. I should give it a try

Hey Austin, the vascular rings only have to intersect at a couple points, they don't have to fit on each other perfectly. So place the seedling a bit off centre on the pere.
I have 2 questions I would love if you could answer. How much time after grafting to get the size of the Trichocereus you showed at the end? Second question what would happen if you used a short pereskiopsis cutting, and instead of degrafting completely, you would transfer to big pot with soil cover up to say bottom third of cactus? You could keep the root system of the Pereskiopsis, and probably sprout roots from the cactus itself. Would that work ? Thanks.
I know you asked a while ago but if you're still looking for an answer - people will do what you described but not with pereskiopsis, they're considered to be more of a temporary graft to get the plant quickly to flowering size rather than a permanent stock. Both because they create somewhat unnatural looking growth but also to my understanding because they just aren't as long lived. You don't want to hide it in some soil only to have it suddenly rot on you a few years later. Same with hylocereus.
Does the pere have to have leaves? I have some cuttings that are rooted and they are about 7in, they have offshoots that have leaves but the rooted base has no leaves, can I graft to the rooted stick with no leaves?

BTW it makes the ignorant feel better but factually simply wiping things with isoproterenol is not not NOT an effective means whatsoever at sterilizing anything but don't take my word for it do your own googling and see for yourself. I am sure it is effective via certain percentage and so maybe it is worthwhile? who knows without an actual study carried out in clinical settings along with a control of maybe just using tap water. Many people in the know consider isopropyl wipedowns to be nothing more than a placebo ritual to make people feel like a procedure is being performed "right"/carefully.....maybe if you had an actual clump of feces on your arm over an IV site maybe some nasty microbes would physically get sandwiched beteen the point and the skin forcing said microbes directly into the blood stream ...I mean hey it COULD happen! But whether or not wiping first with h20 paper towel as opposed to sterile gauze and isopropyl alcohol would be significantly dangerous? Who knows .... But hey if it makes ya feel better go for it. ...ut when I personally REALLY want feel good about disinfecting something? Freshly mixed Bleach and vinegar! It proven to be MANY MANY times stronger than bleach alone! It just KICKS ASS! And I imagine you could wipe plant with it also so long as you follow the wipe with sterile water to remove the bleach/vinegar....reminds me of a news story I heard long time ago that was begging junkies to use BLEACH and NOT alcohol to sterilize needles! Bleach kills the microbes etc where alcohol simply does not (anytime soon anyway) ...My first job was working in a hospital pharmacy and one chore I had was to sterilize certain items that came through the pharmacy rather than Central supply ....We DID use isopropyl alcohol BUT the items were physically submerged OVERNIGHT for many hours! ....Alcohol is simply quite ineffective in any sort of quick sterilization effort ...you are just kidding yourself wiping stuff off

They can grow up to 6 times faster this way sometimes more.

Sure. You can graft just about any cactus species onto Pereskiopsis

...it's not from Mexico, pereskiopsis are from South America, Ecuador I believe.
Wrong. Pereskiopsis grows mostly in Central America (except for one species), Pereskia grows only in South America.
But the degraft is alot harder then other graft
