IMO the Midnight creature is one of the most terrifying aliens on the show. Not because of a monstrous appearance or plans for world domination but because of its capacity for psychological warfare. It nearly succeeded in killing the Doctor by weaponizing the worst in people.
suncore598 Same! What makes it even better is that even the Doctor doesn't know what it is. Like it's this creature that lives on a planet that nothing is supposed to be able to live on with strange abilities that he didn't understand.
Agreed. It's terrifying because it fights him on his own level and it's one of the few enemies to do that, it exposes some uncomfortable truths about who he is (because there _is_ an underlying arrogance to him and he _does_ basically expect people to do what he says because he's clever) and turns words, traditionally one of the Doctor's most powerful weapons, into a weakness. Fantastic episode.
The really clever part of this episode is showing exactly why the Doctor needs a companion. Someone to act as a go between, an interpreter so this exact situation doesn't happen.

@@the_dropbear4392 No, when I arrived at the "Midnight" episode I just thought to myself "Hey, I already watched every episode of New Who before this one, I don't need to watch the rest." and swiftly skipped the rest of series 4 and all of series 5. I was going to post that but you beat me to it. David was also in The War Games, playing one of the soldiers. His biggest role I know of was in the Richard Sharpe TV movies, which gave Sean Bean his big start. Troughton played the Duke of Wellington.

Super late reply but it always reminded me of Wizard's First Rule: "People are stupid. Given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true."
I think condemning and hating the other passengers as just being stupid assholes is missing the fundamental point of the episode. These people WEREN'T assholes, not really. We know they were all perfectly nice, regular people based on the conversations the Doctor had with them before that thing attacked. And the monster didn't do anything to make them fight, it just said that to make them more paranoid. The point isn't to show their flaws as individuals, but to show the flaws that arise in any individual, and especially in any crowd, when it's confused and afraid. It's not just an immigration thing or a terrorism thing or whatever, it's a very general way to comment on the fact that humans, like any other animals, ultimately tend to resort to violence and self-preservation when they're backed into a corner and they don't know what to do. The Doctor has always believed in the best of mankind, has always fought for and trusted in the ultimate worthwhile goodness of the human spirit, that's why he's so fond of Earth specifically. But in this episode, he's brought face to face with the fact that humans, as a species, regardless of individual traits, AREN'T always kind, or clever, or generous. Sure, this is juxtaposed with the hostess sacrificing herself to save the Doctor and everyone on-board, but the fact that nobody had even found out her name during the entire journey belies yet another inherent flaw that people often exhibit. Basically, the Doctor has to deal not just with a freak voice-stealer, but he also has to face the worst of mankind's natural urges, and it's pretty telling that, out of all the situations he's been in, THIS one probably got him more angry and frustrated and scared than so many of the others. It's also the only time the Doctor basically LOST in the end. He was completely, utterly helpless, and would have been thrown out into the planet and burned to ash if not for the hostess's self-sacrifice.

Couldn't agree more. Midnight, to me, is basically a Black Mirror episode without the technology. It shows how susceptible people are to falling prey to fear/paranoia and mob mentality. I can definitely understand why the guys found the passengers to be despicable but don't think it was down to bad writing/bad characters. The episode just demonstrates how shitty people can be when they're afraid.
I feel like it's even cooler that the monster wasn't affecting the passengers. The real villain of the episode wasn't the monster but the people, really. The monster creeped everyone out a bit and the humans did the rest.
This is a great episode on showing how different people react when they're scared. You got Anger, Denial, Logic, Curiousity, Humour, Blame etc.. It's great writing and story for an episode in one room. =D Also, next week is going to be amazing!!!

This episode made me utterly terrified and so stressed. I was on the edge of my seat, covered in sweat - it was like I was on that bus too. I only realised how stressed it had made me after it ended when I realised I had been gripping the edge of the chair the entire time and my hand hurt. Literally the only other episode that scared me and gave me such a physical reaction was The Waters of Mars. To see the Doctor so helpless and scared, not able to use his intelligence or charm to calm everyone down, literally losing his voice and his own free will, it really ramped up the tension and the threat to the Doctor. He was so vulnerable and afraid, it's not something you see often from the Doctor. And David Tennant's acting is amazing! It's an incredible episode with incredible writing that explores the psychology of mob mentality and the different reactions we are capable of during times of extreme stress. Everyone likes to claim that they'd be the level-headed one, protecting the innocent, but the truth is none of us know how we'd react until we're in an extreme situation. An unfortunately some people turn into monsters and self-preserving arseholes!

I can't believe this has only just hit me, but David Troughton's character Professor Hobbes appears to be a deliberate reference to Thomas Hobbes, the philosopher. Hobbes argued that in a state of nature man is fundamentally violent and that life would be 'nasty, brutish and short' - hence why government and society was necessary, to prevent humans simply devouring each other...
+JustSomeRandomGuy Each to their own of course, however I personally feel the show stood relatively really well past TEOT. However I feel it's best to refrain discussing the later episodes here just out of respect to those who might be watching along and not wanting spoilers..!
JustSomeRandomGuy Online, I also disagree about it's decline starting with The Eleventh Hour - in fact, the majority of Series 5 is great! Series 6 is where I'd say where the problem starts.
My opinion that this episode was one of the best because the monster/villain of this episode wasn't exactly the copy-cat creature. It was human fear and paranoid and what human beings are capable of when they faced with that fear. It's like that line from the Joker in The Dark Knight. "their morals, their code, it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be... When the chips are down, these civilized people, they'll eat each other."

This is an excellent episode! It has the right amount of tension and claustrophobia with a bit of a creepy factor too. I think the way the passengers reacted all hysterically by jumping to conclusions and constantly arguing with fear, anger and the drive to save their own skin was very realistic. It also had The Doctor being helpless which added that necessary scare factor and made the tension of the scenario so freaking good. The hostess was a true hero! Can’t wait for Turn Left! One of the best episodes and my personal favourites! It was companion lite this week but next week is the next Doctor lite story! I’m so excited because we’re getting so close to the finale! These remaining episodes are gonna be great! :D

One of the best episodes and one of my favorite episodes from Doctor Who. All in one location, brilliant use of a low budget episode. It shows that sometimes humans can be more dangerous, with them all thinking irrationally and eventually even turning on the Doctor, the Doctor was not in control of the situation and it makes for some brilliant television.
I mean, it's pretty easy to think rationally as an outside observer. But the whole point is that all these people, that have never known fear this bad before, are panicking and beyond the point of thinking rationally.

YES I LOVE THIS ONE. It’s so mysterious, what is the monster? Why is it targeting these people? What are those structures? We probably will never get any answer, so it leaves us to theorise.
As far as I remember, the actress playing the mysterious lifeform learn every line that she had to repeat/synchronise so when they are talking at the beginning she was genuinely speaking *every single* line of dialogue at the same time (at least in the beginning)
This, by far, is one of the most creepiest Doctor Who episodes ever. It shows just how horrible humans can be when they are reacting out of fear and how easily people succumb to the 'mob mentality'.

One of my favourite this one and it is for a lot of people I'd guess. The atmosphere, the acting, the editing, the storybeats, the huis-clos aspect, the subtext... everything is on point there !
The show has sometimes made the point that the worst and most dangerous species in the universe is the human race, and it's never seemed convincing until this episode. A hundred thousand Daleks: no problem for the Doctor. A group of stroppy humans who are freaking out, and the Doctor is completely screwed.
It would depend on which humans I'd be getting stuck with. If it was, say, a group of the current Republican politicians I'd probably opt for the Daleks.
the teenage boy in the episode also plays the titular character on merlin. you might like it, the show is on netflix and has anthony head from buffy the vampire slayer and the actress who plays lena luthor on supergirl
The Midnight Entity. One of the most terrifying Doctor Who monsters ever. And somehow the most unsettling part of this episode is how quickly the passengers turned on each other.
E1 - Foster "I was employed by the Adipose family to foster a new generation after their breeding planet was lost" Doctor "How do you lose a planet?" E2- Lucius "The heaven of Pyroville is gone" Doctor "What do you mean gone? Where's it gone?" Lucius "It was taken. Pyroville is lost" Ep10- Doctor "Did they ever find it?" "Find what?" "The Lost Moon of Poosh?" "Oh, no"
Fun fact, the bottle episode thing actually made it really easy for a group of students to re-create the episode for a play. It's on TH-cam somewhere, I think they cut the son out and redistributed his lines out to other characters, it works really well. Now here's the thing. It's something the show doesn't deal with often, but the facts are that the Doctor is this really clever person, who can make speeches at the drop of a hat, who takes glee in the unknown and the horrific and will usually (This incarnation at least) move on and continue to joke and joke despite all the deaths and horrible stuff going on. Now, that's all fine and dandy for, say, a forty five minute episode where we get to see little snippets of their adventure. But if you were really stuck in a situation like that and SO many coincidences pile up? Yeah. The people were ABSOLUTELY in the wrong, but I cut them the tiniest bit of slack because we have access to information that they don't. Also, the old man? Related to the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton.

Honestly think you lot missed the point of the episode, which is slightly disappointing. You sit there saying that you'd have killed him or thrown him out like nothing, yet not considered the scenario the people were in. The people themselves weren't crazy or stupid as shown earlier in the episode. But, you expect them to trust a random person claiming to know everything in the middle of nowhere with an unknown threat onboard? And you expect them to not act insane? This is realism of humans at it's best. I think it was portrayed and written very well. Just unfortunate that sometimes as a group you can talk over dialogue and miss certain points. Personally think you interpreted it wrong. That's all. It's fine, you guys are entitled to react to it as you want to, but, I sometimes get the impression you think this show is always silly and mostly comedic, which yes it is and can be, but it also explores the darker sides of life.

I think these are the most realistic background characters out of any episode of Doctor Who. Most episodes of Doctor Who have characters who just go along with it. If something like this happened in real life then people would start to act like they did here. I'm sure what some things you guys were saying was for comedic effect, but for people who enjoy shows like Game of Thrones you really had a black and white viewpoint of this episode.

The alien planet is barely seen and the monster is never shown. People under pressure act ugly and turn on each other. And there is no happy ending.

Dude why did you just copy his comment?
I feel like it's even cooler that the monster wasn't affecting the passengers. The real villain of the episode wasn't the monster but the people, really. The monster creeped everyone out a bit and the humans did the rest.
Oh shit i just got it
The monsters that come closest to killing the Doctor are plain old people. There’s a lesson there.

The Ponderer Hey, man! Yeah, one of my favourite episodes from my favourite series. So good!
And a plain old person saved him from those plain old people. Never forget that.
This is a great episode on showing how different people react when they're scared. You got Anger, Denial, Logic, Curiousity, Humour, Blame etc.. It's great writing and story for an episode in one room. =D Also, next week is going to be amazing!!!

TO THE LOST MOON OF POOSH!
We still have to turn left...

Something I actually didn't know. Thanks for posting that.

The start of some of the (in my opinion) most disturbing, depressing and amazing episodes of Who.
Yeah, Turn Left is probably the darkest episode in the show's history - and I love it!
The Run from this Episode to The End Of Time is amazing then it went downhill from The Eleventh Hour 😢
I love this episode because of how mysterious it is.

Didn't expect them to recognise Colin (Jethro) from Merlin. Unfortunately that means they've already seen it, so we won't see it here.

The show has sometimes made the point that the worst and most dangerous species in the universe is the human race, and it's never seemed convincing until this episode. A hundred thousand Daleks: no problem for the Doctor. A group of stroppy humans who are freaking out, and the Doctor is completely screwed.
istoppedthecar would you rather be in a room full of daleks or humans?
It would depend on which humans I'd be getting stuck with. If it was, say, a group of the current Republican politicians I'd probably opt for the Daleks.
I watched this episode so long ago I forgot Colin Morgan is in it. I just yelled in my head "Merlin!!" 😂

If something like this happened in real life then people would start to act like they did here. I'm sure what some things you guys were saying was for comedic effect, but for people who enjoy shows like Game of Thrones you really had a black and white viewpoint of this episode.

That beginning clip with the foldable frisbee was glorious...
This one and the last two are what got me hooked on doctor who. I really like how they did this one. like a stage play.
Still my favourite episode! Gives me chills every time.
"I think inside de box because it's bigger on the inside" I HAVE THIS TSHIRT!!

Next episode is something heart crushing.
i can't recall the full plot of many RTD era eps (not bc i dont like them its just been so long) but this one i can recall like the back of my hand bc its so memorable and smart and just amazing, i might change my mind on RTD rewatch but i think this is my fav ep of that era. The writing is genius and the limited set and lack of vfx just adds to the claustrophobic tension and i just love it. its a true statement on mob mentality and ganging up on the smartest person in the room and the look on the doctors face when he loses control of his body and voice and those people are sending him off to his death still haunts me to this day dude

Before the Crossover... There was an alternate universe, a beetle, Rose Tyler and the whole world gone to hell... TURN LEFT and everything changes for the better. TURN RIGHT and things are about to get worse.

I love Midnight one of my favorites of the whole series. I think that this kind of episodes are amazing.

This episode is one of the scariest in my opinion. A monster you can see is less scary than one you can't.

Fun fact as the shutters close if you zoom in when he says he sees a shadow there is in fact a moving shadow.
This is arguably the single best episode of Doctor Who... Because it’s the anti Doctor Who episode.
The Doctor’s usual strengths become his weaknesses. The alien planet is barely seen and the monster is never shown. People under pressure act ugly and turn on each other. And there is no happy ending.

The dark planet is actually an unreleased TV episode that only made onto big finish and it's about the first doctor traveling the early days of the universe and Steven and Vicki are the companions and they land in the middle of a war between the people of light and the people of dark it isn't shown wether they have a physical appearance but perhaps midnight serves as a sequel to that audio story and this creature featured is an 1 of the people of darkness that escaped the war and fled to midnight but it's as old as the universe anyway it's just a theory of mine anyway
