I know it's just a TV show, but this scene right here is exactly why real gunfighters in the days of the old west didn't face each other down in the street and have a fast draw duel like you see in the movies. It's why a famous old Hollywood trope is a complete myth: the idea that once you became famous for being fast and deadly with a gun, you'd never have a moment's peace again, because aggressive young punks would come out of the woodwork everywhere you went, trying to get famous themselves by being the man who killed you. Wild Bill Hickok, John Wesley Hardin, Jesse James, were all shot from behind, taken completely unawares. Billy the Kid was shot by Pat Garrett, as Garrett waited in Billy's darkened room for him to return, and then shot him while he was silhouetted in the door. The actual gunmen from that era tried their best not to give an opponent any opportunity to shoot back at them. I think this is because those men, veterans of _actual_ gunfights, who saw how gunfights really went down, understood that an enemy doesn't automatically just fall over dead because you hit him first. Often he's just wounded -- _maybe_ mortally, but maybe not -- and fully capable of shooting you right back before he snuffs it. The old west's real gunfighters understood this, and conducted themselves accordingly.
Yeah, you're right on that. The only real historical "gunfight" I can think of is the O.K. Corral, and that only happened because one side went to stop another group from forming up. Neither side had any idea there was even going to be a gunfight 30 seconds before it happened, and then blamo! 3 men hurled into eternity in an instant.
@@robadamson1 I know this comment was a few months ago but there were many gunfights in the Old West--they just didn't match the Hollywood version of two men meeting each other in the street for a preplanned dual. Those were indeed rare. During modern times that fact became twisted by the myth that gunfights themselves were rare. No, just the Hollywood version. Most of the real gunfights were spontaneous, happened at short range, and many times involved alcohol. But they happened a lot. Read up on Ben Thompson, who was considered one of the greatest gunfighters. He ended up killed with his friend via ambush in salon in 1884. Or Luke Short. Clay Allison supposedly killed over 30 men in his lifetime--ended up dying when he became drunk and fell off a wagon, which then promptly ran over his neck and killed him.

I remember reading about the greatest duel of feudal Japan's most revered samurai, Miyamoto Musashi. During the final battle with his nemesis, Sasakai Kojiro, Musashi's headband was cut off, as he struck down his opponent with a lethal blow. It is widely believed that Kojiro died, believing himself to be the victor. Since western and samurai tales often borrow elements from each other, I can't help but wonder if the creators of Justified were inspired by Musashi's greatest duel.
It's definitely possible. However a lot of culture surrounding Samurai and Cowboys are very similar to the point many Japanese people revere cowboys as western samurai actually. And they weirdly have a lot in common such as; Duty, justice, honor, quickdraws, and duels. However whether or not those ideals were lived up to in reality is another question.
@@wezzy9437 Most Westerns draw inspiration from Samurai films and vice versa. They compliment eachother so much therese genuinely a crazy amount of stories retelling themselves in the other genre
Boon's comment about veterans really rubbed me the wrong way. As a combat veteran, I can assure folks that we do in fact have souls and know what it's like to "live it down." I say this because I have actually encountered men like Boon. They fucked around and found out.
‘Justified’ was an incredible series. And I do understand that they had to exaggerate things for dramatic effect. But I’ve got to wonder. In real life, how many times would a US deputy marshal be involved in a Wild West, quick-draw shootout? I’d guess probably never. But poor ol’ Raylan seems to be involved in one every other week.
Never. In fact the law draws first. No fair fight. No playing around. Just confronting a lawman with a holstered gun gets you immediately drawed on. Blam.
Well most lawmen entering into a potentially dangerous situation would likely already have their sidearms drawn. Raylan tried to play it nice and cool with the unlawful elements of his jurisdiction by keeping his weapon holstered, but this meant he had to be ready to draw quickly if he misjudged the situation. In the end its just a tv show, but the allure of it was a lawman who was very much built of the same streets he now presided over. Far fetched in some sense, but there are some kernels of truth in it. Ive personally known two sheriff's deputies who grew up in the seedier parts of town who used Raylan's hands off approach to keeping those same streets safe as law officers. Their background in those neighborhoods plus their goodwill kept them more safe than their sidearms
Murder life pro tip: if you've already resolved to kill someone who's armed and dangerous, draw and fire on them while they're speaking -- they'll be slightly slower to react. Raylan almost died because he's a (good) LEO that doesn't want to draw first.
@@ComedyBros5 Modern day Clint Eastwood. That is pretty close, yes, but Timothy can't really play a mean character like Clint could. For Clint, you feared the abilities AND the man himself.
Just a thought here. But it looks like Boone is carrying a .45 or .38 caliber, which both carry a lower muzzle velocity than a 9MM. I think Boone wins this duel if he goes center mass vs the hubris of a headshot.
Moral of this scene? Head shots are riskier, smaller target. You might just clip the guy instead of permanently dropping him. Torso shots are comparatively safer (unless the guy is wearing teflon or kevlar).
It's pretty clear now that Boon was going to lose, in the end however he could've taken down Raylan for good had he done the same as he did; Raylan aimed center mass like he's been trained to do. Boon was overly confident and aimed for the head.

Hollywood has been trying to find a way to write strong women. The only one on Justified that seems week is Raylan's ex. Love Ava. There is no bad scene with Loretta there. Boon's comment about veterans really rubbed me the wrong way. As a combat veteran, I can assure folks that we do in fact have souls and know what it's like to "live it down." I say this because I have actually encountered men like Boon. They fucked around and found out.
Its a show. Relax
The closest we got to an actual old western in the modern western
‘Justified’ was an incredible series. And I do understand that they had to exaggerate things for dramatic effect. But I’ve got to wonder.
In real life, how many times would a US deputy marshal be involved in a Wild West, quick-draw shootout? I’d guess probably never. But poor ol’ Raylan seems to be involved in one every other week.
Never. In fact the law draws first. No fair fight. No playing around. Just confronting a lawman with a holstered gun gets you immediately drawed on. Blam.
Any Chicago Street cop probably does!
@@SelectCircleLol yup just the reality is cops are horrible shots so they usually die in a one on one.
Yup. He did just that to the two thugs that were after him in L.A. in the first season but decided to give Boon a sporting chance 🤔
'Come one step closer and I'll shoot you'. 'Come on Marshal, can't we..' Pow.
That hat was the bartenders hat that Boon bullied him out of too bad it wasn't retired to him.
Raylan waited for him to pull😅
In slow motion, Boon was faster on the draw than Raylan.....Boon's aim was just a little off......This was such a great series...
Are you sure? It looked like Boon drew first and Raylon's shot hit first, but just barely. I think Raylon was slightly faster
Tried watching it at 0.25x but these guys were so fast that I could not catch them being shot. Maybe it needs even slower speed like 0.00025x!!
Try pausing the video and use the "," (komma) and "." (period) keys to go backward/forward 1 frame. The fx for the blood is not pretty ...
What guns were they using?
😂Boone hit the ground first with his knees just before Raylan heeled back over .
Huh, the first episode of City Primeval started with Raylan’s truck getting rear ended by a criminal.
Typical Raylan: Might be oozing blood, but let me make sure my hats okay, 😅👏🏼 As I stated in a previous post, Eastwood + Wayne = Raylan 🤘🏼
Absolutely! Olyphant is our modern Eastwood. I wish he’d take on more western roles. He was my only favorite part in that Star Wars show!
@@ComedyBros5 Agreed, and still in good shape to tackle certain roles
@@MrAndy12878 Exactly. I wouldn’t be mad if he just owned his typecast and took nothing but western/gunslinger roles. He’s the best man for the job.
@ComedyBros5 he even voiced him in Rango
@@ComedyBros5 Modern day Clint Eastwood. That is pretty close, yes, but Timothy can't really play a mean character like Clint could.
In Deadwood, Timothy also plays one of the 'softer' characters in the story. Like in Hitman, you fear the ability of the character but not the character himself.
For Clint, you feared the abilities AND the man himself.
is boon the poor man's Doc Holiday?
fun fact: if you slow it down to .25 you can see the mist of blood
You can see that on the Blu-ray, since Blu-ray picks up a lot of the little things.
If you watch it frame by frame, you can see that the FX-department didn't do a very good job ....
Live by the gun die by the gun 🥀🥀🥀
Just a thought here. But it looks like Boone is carrying a .45 or .38 caliber, which both carry a lower muzzle velocity than a 9MM. I think Boone wins this duel if he goes center mass vs the hubris of a headshot.
Nice
Boone sure did act like he thought he was Doc Holliday!
Moral of this scene?
Head shots are riskier, smaller target. You might just clip the guy instead of permanently dropping him. Torso shots are comparatively safer (unless the guy is wearing teflon or kevlar).
Were did she come from ??😊
Never leave the keys in the car.
It's pretty clear now that Boon was going to lose, in the end however he could've taken down Raylan for good had he done the same as he did;
Raylan aimed center mass like he's been trained to do.
Boon was overly confident and aimed for the head.
Boon, and really all of Markham’s goons, were all so epic and great, but all such wasted opportunities. I’ll forever say that the Crowe cousins should’ve been off’d early season 5 and then Markham and his guys introduced. THEN, bring in Boon in the S5 finale to have all of S6 to build up and give lots of time to.
Few more years and you can direct your own shows with AI!
Daryl Crowe was one of THE most annoying characters ever.
@@hellcat1401 Yep. Him and his brothers should’ve lasted maybe 2 episodes. Having him “outsmart” Raylan multiple times was so aggravating and just didn’t fit Daryl’s character.
@@hellcat1401 They molded the character to the actor.
Yeah, was really hoping to see more of Boon to have a better build up to the climax, he was badass, funny, but also creepy and scary at times, really interesting character that deserved more air time
Who got their shot off quicker?
Boon thought he was doc holiday. He's no daisy.
Wonder if Boon died thinking he actually got Raylan?
He had doubt - or Loretta wouldn't have had to step on his hand.
Hollywood has been trying to find a way to write strong women.
The only one on Justified that seems week is Raylan's ex.
Love Ava. There is no bad scene with Loretta there.
Mag is the perfect villain. And heck the Red headed Crowe, She is just perfect.
Strong doesn't mean flawless. It's overcoming flaws strong doesn't mean the men are weak. Maybe stupid, but not weak.
I would of prefer the ending, if Raylan didnt get up.
And I thought I had small hands!
My only disappointment in this scene is Boon dies thinking he killed Raylan.
Bruh... you just got shot in the head and saved a little girl. You will be forgiven 😂
Anyone know the jacket Boon is wearing here? It’s not Barbour or Orvis. It’s killing me, I want it lol
You see the hat. 1:39 Dead center. Us the audience are worried. Yet it was established early on in series, Raylan wore his Stetson on high, like the original cowboy gunslingers. So it just grazed him. Still, Raylan was knocked out cold, if Loretta wasn't as quick thinking, and generally unafraid, Boon would have gotten off a second shot and they would be both dead.
So who was faster?
Raylan is faster but he drew after since he's a Marshall so the shot needs to be "justified"
Boon was faster in the race to the afterlife...
Aside from the "modernization" of Justified in City Primeval, biggest disappointment is that Raylan didn't keep Boon's hat.
But he kept his girl - no?
Nah, Boon's hat didn't fit him at all.
Haha I thought that was the only good part.
what do you mean by modernisation?
@@gamblorrr The original Justified series took place mostly in rural Kentucky, specifically the mountain areas of Eastern Kentucky. By "modernization" I think he just means the new series is in Detroit, not small hollers in Kentucky
Maybe it’s been a minute since I was in Harlan but don’t remember all those designer boots and jeans runnin around those broke hills…iffin you wanna make a show that’s factually close to accurate maybe mix in some overalls or red wings
Boone thinks hes doc holiday lol.
Marshall dillions first gunfight ended that way on gunsmoke. Similar anyway.
Justified
I always thought Boon was such a wannabe haha. The way he pretended not to know who John Wayne is while aping every Evil Cowboy trope from every western movie ever was hilarious to me. Suuuure dude, I totally believe you aren't trying to be Jesse James.
And at the end he lets her go like an idiot. He should’ve put her in jail where she belongs
Considering he also had a daughter, I don't think he could take a mother away from her son.
The only thing I believe granted Ava a break was the fact that she should have never been in jail in the first place, sure she made a lot of bad decisions along the way, but the whole reason she got to the whole CI mess and everything that followed was because she was serving time after being setup and unjustly sentenced because of the corrupt prison guard, so it was only fair that such wrong was made right at the end by Raylan
Whatever punishment Ava might have deserved, she got full measure in the end.
Raylan had the sun in his eyes and a potential target right behind him. Seems like a poor spot to square off.
Was there a mistake with the sfx here? It looks like blood comes out Raylan's torso when he gets shot.
That’s what I thought too
I slowed the video down and paused it. The mist of blood definitely blows backward from Raylan's head, while the one for Boone comes out his chest and back.
@@danieldickson8591 thank you for your awesome work..
