    Mythbusters tested the 21 foot rule. It only works against someone if by surprise and only if they don't have a round already chambered. Trying it against a fully-aware and ready lawman with a round chambered is a guaranteed death. That isn't even taking into account Raylan's quickdraw abilities.

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz ปีที่แล้ว +56

      I remember it differently. They showed that you will get off one shot, but not really well aimed, and not sure to 100% incapacitate the attacker before he reaches you with his knife.
      And with bullet wounds, apart from the ones that hit the brainstem, the attacker will be alive long enough that he still can cause deadly injuries to the defender with his stabbing item.
      So chances are, both die.
      With less than 21 feet or when the attacked has his back towards the attacker, if i remember correct, they didn't even manage to get the gun out of the holster.
      Somewhere else i saw someone trying out dropping to the ground backwards or a sideways roll, as this moved the attacked out of the direct path of the attacker and resulted in enough time gain to aim. (still no guarantee to be unharmed or survive)

      It's not a "rule" in any event. It is simply a recognition of hard reaction time math and the limitations of bullets versus human beings. The attacker has no mental lag, they are initiating. it will take them "x" time to cover "y" distance (minus the length of their arm and weapon) to get a potentially lethal blow. There are hard physiological times from recognition of the "go" signal to the body being able to start the draw and get a round off. The minimum neurological time for any human to perceive a stimulus is about .25 seconds, at that point your "draw to first effectively aimed shot" time becomes meaningful. Given the average time from start to impact of a knife by the attacker, you need either a rocket fast draw, or, better, to also have trained not just to draw, but draw and move, or, better, not left a clear lane between you and a suspected aggressor in the first place. There are literally 1980's era training videos on this on youtube featuring Dan Inosanto. Mythbusters is not a qualified source of information on defensive firearms use.

      @johnfernau6657 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@brianbalster3521 The twenty one foot rule is commonly trained for by law enforcement in the Tueller drill. Sgt Tueller was with a agency out west (Vagas I believe) when he analyzed that if someone is within 21 feet they can and have stabbed people because an average person can cover this distance before most people can draw and fire a shot much less a disabling shot. Remember just because you shoot someone doesn't mean the fall down right then and there. Even if you totally destroy the heart the average person can still function before the brain shuts down due to blood loss. This is why LEOs really don't like letting people get closer than roughly 21 feet.

      @@RogueDragon05 There were like 4 gang wars with gunfights in the streets over the course of the show. Before that the Crowders had been stably in charge for a generation.
      "more stably and not quite as violently "
      That means less crime.
      "Hell even the drug cartels had the local sheriff in their pocket long before Raylan ever got back."

      @@alphanerd7221 Ahhh your one of those "The definition of peace is the absence of conflict sort" If you don't hear about it... it didn't happen and bad things never happen as long as officially there is peace. Gotcha. Violent people commit violent crimes and when law enforcement dismantles the violent organization the violent people get more violent so just leave the violent people alone and ignore it. And no it dosen't mean less crime cause shootings aren't the only things that are "crimes" and my point wasen't that Raylan single handedly took down the cartel or ended their influance my point was that the violance they brought was already there without Raylan, the cartel was killing people in exchange for the sheriff's becoming their agent to do as they wanted.
      The violence very much would have grown and continued without Raylan around, Ava would been murdered by Bo, Boyd would still be a neo nazi and blowing people up, Wynonna would probably be in prison or dead along with her husband, Loretta woulda been raped and killed or killed by Coover. Doyle would still be covering up for Coover and Dickie's crimes, I could go on. Raylan didn't start the fire it was always burning. But he did clear out plenty of the thugs that brought more violence.
      Look I don't agree with but I'm not gonna get into it further over a tv show. Realistically Raylan would be a lousy Marshal but the last thing the show in general is realistic which is what makes it fun.

    The 21ft rule is taught in the better academies. The FBI has done numerous studies and 21 ft. is the minimum safe distance you can allow a person with a knife to get to you and still give you time to draw and hip fire before the person with the knife and get to you and stab you with it. I suspect if you are a quick draw expert like Raylan, which NO real LEO's are, that distance might still be viable at less than 21ft, but not in the real world! We watched videos were the FBI did very detailed tests of this theory, it was a huge eye opener how fast a knife wielding suspect could traverse that distance and long it took for a normally trained officer to draw and fire from the hip with some degree or accuracy let alone point shoulder aim.

      I would imagine it’s more efficient if the attacker just goes instead of discussing it like this idiot does. If someone has their hand already on their sidearm while it’s holstered as to be ready to draw and some dipshit with a knife starts asking “how far apart do you think we are?”, weapon out and up before they take the first step.

      The fire arms master on set probably told them this is the only way he was winning the fight, Rayleigh isn’t really a quick draw he’s a little above average but the reason he wins is he really dosent have a problem killing you so the other guy even if it’s his job to kill will hesitate even if it’s only for a fraction of a sec that means he wins in this case he’s going up against someone basically just like him he likes to kill he’s not going to hesitate he’s inside a distance where he can sprint and take him to the ground before he can full clear the holster and aim the bad guy has about20 pounds on him meaning he’s going to be stunned when he hits the ground

      There's a couple of mistakes you're making. The most obvious is that saying the heart "can continue to act for approximately 15 seconds" absolutely does not mean that at second #14 function is still 100%, which your calculations imply. The next thing is that not everybody is a movie villain; people who sustain a mortal wound sometimes change their plans and sometimes they miss a beat or two. Even ones that don't die sometimes stop what they were doing.
