You are exactly right. If you fly into O`ahu and drive to Waikiki you would think it is any modern city, but when you get to the windward side you find you're in paradise. Fran
I first heard of slack key in Michener's novel, checked on it from time to time in the pre-internet days, never found anything, eventually forgot about it. Ran across it tonight looking up Hawai'ian Pidgin terminology, thought, "They've got everything on TH-cam," and this was the first clip I looked at. What a beautiful piece of music! As a folky in the '60s-'70s I experimented with open tuning, but nothing like this. Wanna try again! Thanks much!

Led's guitar playing was a strong influence on my own playing, and Ned's bass lines were even more of an influence in my early days when I was a bassist for a couple of backyard bands. Much mahalo!

Ahhh. I was lucky enough to stay in Kaneohe for about a year and I miss waking up to the Koʻolaus every morning. Also miss seeing Ledward down at Kona brewing co. on the weekends, pretty much the best free show you could hope for. Beautiful and full of spirit. Much love for brother Led!
By the way, Eric, if you get back to Kane`ohe, Ledward now plays every Saturday evening at Honey's at the Ko`olau Golf Course, no more at Kona Brewing. You will get no exercise, you will only gain weight by only sitting around all day listening to them I only hope you're unemployed so you no have to call in motion sick every day. I'm glad you found this clip - I think we've come a fair distance in video and audio quality since then, but the heart of the music comes through and the Ko`olau in the mist is a sight to remember. Thanks for posting this and the background story. I've listened to Ledward for a few years now but I did know he was from Kalapana area. We got to spend some time on the coast near there exploring in the rental jeep in January and play some music in Puna/Pahoa area.
